Cambridge lot. Talk to me about Luke Berry. Lot of chat about us making a move. I've seen he's scored a few. Realistic assessment on his ability to step up a league or two.
Futile hope was that he might slip under the radar, at least until the summer. I don't expect a move but not surprised that L1 and Championship teams are interested (again). He's on a decent length of contract and he (and especially his lady) didn't settle at Barnsley.

I don't think he's key to our future success but he's a talisman and I wouldn't go as far as SVH to say we should move him on whilst he's hot and there's a profit to be made.

Played wide right (where Barnsley mostly used him) or as a holding midfield (where Money often used him) he's an adequate L2 player, especially if motivated. Allowed to roam forward in support of a single strong striker or in a flexible front 3 and he's a potential match winner who rarely has a bad game. I can't see the club or him wanting a move but there's always a price. I can't see you or your manager being daft enough to pay it

Most of our fans don't like him cos he's not very good :animatedf:

Whatever we think of both Carroll and Toto we've now sold two first teamers for undisclosed amounts 12 days into the transfer window and brought in two kids, gotta say I'm a getting a little bit concerned.

We don't agree on much do we :lol:

Although I do agree I'm also concerned - but willing to give Coxall the benefit of the doubt until end of Jan, then we'll see who's gone and who's came in.

We don't normally do any business until 31st Jan either, so that's a slight positive.

He sounds exactly the sort of player we need. Just sent Colkett back so we have some space. I hope this one is a goer.

True but I still respect your opinion on matters, we just see things differently I guess?

Like Paynter being an excellent striker and talisman for the side

His stock has gone up a fair amount this season and most Cambridge fans would be pretty upset if he went for less than seven figures. But we'll see, I can't see him wanting to move as far as Bristol frankly (as Alan says, he didn't settle in Yorkshire and I sense he and his Mrs are home birds) - and I imagine there are one or two London or midland based clubs tracking him.

If he stays with us this season (which I personally think he will), then I expect us to reach the play offs. If he leaves then I expect we'll finish mid table.

Of course mate, that's football.

My prediction on Paynter a few weeks back wasn't far wide of the mark - it's just taken Hignett a little longer to realise he is rubbish than I expected.

Saying that, the first half on Saturday was probably Paynter's best (half of a) game since he joined the club.

He probably could step up to league one, he did okayish at Barnsley but I don't think he was ever played in his best position, which is just off the striker. I'd be pretty surprised if he went to Rovers as the fee it would take to get him would be pretty large, and I wasn't aware you had that much cash to spend? Also, don't you play 4-4-2? If so, he isn't really suited to it. We'll see though

Berry is one of the best attacking midfielders in League 2. His last 3 seasons with us have led to 14, 16 and 15 (so far this year) goals. He'll do a job on the flank or as a holding player but is far less effective. His strengths are his athleticism and technique - he excels when harrying defenders, chasing down goalkeepers (has scored several goals this way) and making late runs into the box. He has a good range of passing and can score goals from range (or free kicks). He hasn't got much pace, hence why he struggles sometimes out wide.

When we got promoted from the Conference Barnsley met his release fee and he moved up there for a season, which I believe went like this - made 30 odd appearances but mostly in a right midfield position as fellow new signing Hourihane was prioritised ahead of him in the attacking midfield role. By all accounts he did ok in League 1 despite playing out of position.

He's improved in the last 18 months and I think he'd easily step up to League 1 and could do a job in the Championship, as long as he's played behind the striker.

That said, I'd be very surprised if you could afford him; we paid Barnsley a fee for him and promptly stuck him on a 4 year contract. We're also very stable financially and have aims to get into LG1 ourselves.

As other Us have said - he is a Cambridge boy and I'm not sure he'd view Bristol Rovers as an attractive enough proposition to leave.

We play with a variety of systems but yeah 4-4-2 has been most effective recently. I think DC would like to play with a loose three up front away from home especially but we haven't quite had the players for it. On the financial side both our manager and board have said there are funds to spend. ( 2 bids lodged with champ clubs for unnamed players) but how much is debatable. As I said it's just a rumour and until recently I was convinced Jay Simpson was on the verge of signing for us.
Thanks for all the replies chaps.

We've got 2 right backs but one is a teenager who often plays left back instead and the other one is shit and was absolutely hammered in public last weekend by our manager for making awful mistakes (and I quote) "AGAIN", so it would make sense for us to be in the market for a new one.
We've chucked an offer in now apparently.

I don't think we have £1.5 mill to spend on one player but I don't believe for a second that he'll go for that much. Fair fucks if you do get that much though.

Personally I don't think we would entertain anything less than £1.5m. Do you have that sort of cash?

Although I don't want to see us sell Berry, I'm really intrigued as to the sum we'd sell for. We haven't had such a saleable asset for years and we're not desperate for cash, which is a rare situation in our history.

I'd be annoyed if we sold him for less than £1m but I wonder if our Board would have the minerals to turn that sort of offer down?

Say Abers, is that fucking traitor Gaffney surplus to requirements at the Mem? Hmm, wouldn't mind a straight swap.......with Piggott.

Still in and around the starting lineup. Brings a lot to the team although he does need to score more goals.
7/10 and developing nicely.
I don't know what a piggot is.

Pigott actually, my bad. A Joe Pigott is another word for a striker who is clearly too good for the division he plays in. Like our Joe is.

Oh ok then. Sounds great. I'm sure DC will in touch just after he's finished his weekly magic bean shopping trip.

This is just going to end up like last seasons January window where we don't sign a single player isn't it.

Every other team getting exciting players in, but us?

No! won't happen so we'll just have to extend contracts to players still here who were even out of favour last season.

Max Muller has been given an 18 month contract extension. The ex Salzburg central defender has been out injured since a pre season friendly but has played in the piss pot cup recently and Ainsworth was impressed, might mean Pierre could be sold if anyone puts a decent offer in

Don't be pessimistic. We can't sign anyone while we're over our FL wage percentage thing.

Once we offload some players like Russell Penn and Mark Ellis, I'm sure we'll sign a player or two.

Hardly newsworthy but Bogle has favourited two tweets from local journalists mentioning a quote from Bignot about him being not for sale. Read as much or little into that as you want.

Winchester, Pike, Boyle, Brown, Onariase, De Girolamo in.
Griffiths, Parslow, Morgan-Smith, Dickie, Smith, Arthur, Whitehead, Suliman, Cooper, Jennings out.

Quite a bit of turnover so far this window.

Am I the only one who thinks what Curle was quoted as saying (see below) is slightly suspicious? The 're-jigging of figures' bit doesn't sit right with me.

From the BBC website - United have already extended the loan of Newcastle defender Macaulay Gillesphey until the end of the season, a deal Curle says required a "re-jigging of figures presented to the Football League" to ensure the deal could go through under terms of the salary cap.

Hmm :pond:

Got to be dodgy that, considering Curle said it as well :bl:

edit; we have signed Hayden White on loan from Peterborough, view to make it permanent in the summer.
