The Avengers: Age of Ultron 6.5/10

It's a bit meh, one of the weakest Marvel movies but to be honest you know what to expect from them these days. How many superhero movies left before they run out of steam? About 20?

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Horrible Bosses 2

The plot holes, oh god the plot holes... You know that film 'holes'... About digging holes... This has more holes.

Still quite funny, mind.

I'd probably give it a 7 on reflection, it really isn't bad, with the only major downside Jar-Jar, albeit a big one. Ok it has the awful Liam Neeson in it as well, and they take too long getting Annie(!) off Tattooine, (and what about the gorgeous Natalie Portman's Queen accent too!) but then I think it had to be a slow-burner in order to chart Palpatine's ascension.

Age of Ultron: 8/10 (Would have been a 7 but mid credits scene character warrants a point)

Still good but didn't have the same impact the first one did for me. Was always going to be hard, IMO Guardians of the Galaxy took the super hero team thing to another level and although Ultron was cool, everyone's kinda just waiting for Thanos.
Wasn't a fan of the new romance introduced and they seemed to be forcing 'banter' in when it wasn't always need/funny.
Also a new character is introduced half way through and I spent the rest of the film trying to figure out who he was only for it to be someone I'd never heard of, my geek-pride took a bit of a hit...

double header this weekend

Avengers Age of Ultron (8/10)
really enjoyed the film. The addition of the twins were probably my best part of the film. They've got some new, cool powers that translate well to the film. The Ultron bad guy was a bit too corny for me, but everything else was good.

Big Hero Six (9/10)
call me a pussy or what not, but i fuckin loved this film. favourite kids film i think i've seen. when my 7 yr old lad was getting emotionally involved into the film on a sadness level, that says a lot about how good the film must be (usually it's either excited / happiness / scared emotions with my lad). can't believe some of the reviews i read on IMDB, i thought it was brilliant.

Yeah, I posted on The Marvel Cinema thread. Really enjoyed it and thought it was better than the first. Nice set up and nice character development especially with Hawkeye.

Kingpin - Daft but enjoyable. Not as good as I remembered but still a decent 90 minutes. 6/10.

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck

New from HBO, a fascinating insight into the life of Kurt Cobain, the rock star, the husband and the father through old home recordings, songs, journals and artwork, sprinkled with interviews from those who were close to him.

9/10

Age of Ultron 6/10: honestly this film was so meh. It wasn't so much, "let's make it all about action with some comedy" like the first one rather Age of Ultron is "let's crowbar as many comedy/jokes in as possible."

I didn't hate this. Which is high praise from me for a film of this type. It was actually surprisingly amusing in parts. Still not sure I'm cut out for arthouse cinema but hey, I'll persevere a little longer. Duke of Burgundy next on the list.

As an aside, are there rules about unsimulated sex scenes in film? Carel? Scummers? Jockney?

Dallas Buyers Club

Really enjoyed this. Thought McConaughey was very good. I know embarrassingly little about the HIV and AIDS crisis in the 1980s so it was interesting to learn about the drug issue.

Depends what you mean by "rules". Historically such films have tended to run into censorship issues, either in literal terms (committee of old men with big pair of scissors), or de facto, in that it is/was generally harder (oi oi) to secure funding/distribution/exhibition. There have been examples of self imposed industry standards of practice that forbid it (and much else) too, most notably the Hays Code. And obviously bona fide shagging is going to ensure a punitive classification in whatever ratings system a country employs, and similar hurdles when it comes to TV screenings.

But nowadays there's nothing enshrined in law in most (western?) countries that bans it. I mean, hardcore pornography is both legal and readily available, and the boundaries drawn between regular movies and porn and other paracinemas are mostly arbitrary; a matter of taste and (often dubious) convention.

It is interesting that you invoke the term "art house" though. Even in these exceedingly enlightened times, stuff like unsimulated sex (a world champion bit of doublespeak if ever there was one, btw, innit?), animal death etc, gets an easier go in High Art contexts than in Low. Michael Haneke can show a horse getting offed, and a Tarkovsky DVD will get passed uncut, but woe betide the grubby horror movie that contains the same.

We can only thank our lucky stars that we've got such learned arbiter elegantiae, qualified and empowered to pronounce that which is safe for the intelligentsia to consume and that which might send the great unwashed a bit High Rise. Like female ejaculation, for example.

Not massively into the superhero genre but I've enjoyed all the X-Men films and this was no exception. 8/10

Devil's Knot (2013)
Utterly depressing. 7/10

Its ok, I went to the pictures to see this with a few friends including a woman friend that's a bit prudish and right at the start with the sex scenes I was looking at her to see her reaction and I felt a bit embarrassed tbh! :D We were going to see something else that night but by the time we got there it was already started so we chose that.

Total Recall ( 2012)
Seen plenty of poor film remakes but this was one of the worst, the original was brilliant based on Mars for a lot of the film but not in this shit which meant there was no woman with 3 tits. No humour in it at all whereas Arniie had some great one liners. 2/10.

I'm sure there was a three tit woman at one point? Surely that bumps it up to a 3/10, one for each areola.

It's just evaporated from my memory. Why even call it 'total recall' if it's going to be so different? And shit.

I have spent the last week ploughing through The French Revolution on youtube.

It is a huge massive epic all in French with subtitles so takes abit of getting through, but is quite historically correct, beautifully shot and good for someone who likes big historical epics, covers the whole lotand I very much enjoyed it all.

not one to recommend for everyone, but if your a big historical film buff, head onto youtube and get it watched.
