I'm on 6 PO defeats if you include the ones i've been alive for. One every 3.5 years, that's ridiculous.

But still better than Toms haha

The ones I can remember:

1998-99: lost against Gillingham in the semi finals. I didn't go to the away leg but my Dad and Grandad did and they still don't like talking about it.

2000-01: After finally winning promotion the season before, we beat Birmingham on penalties to get to Cardiff (still my favourite preston moment) and then lost 3-0 to Bolton in the final (not my favourite moment). I remember crying pretty much all the way home

2004-05: beat Derby in the semi finals, Nuge scored a cracking goal in the first leg which we won 2-0 (my cousin was mascot lol) and then drew 0-0 away (Rasiak missed a penalty and cried looooool). Didn't go to the away leg, me and aforementioned cousin went out with a PNE flag after the game and walked round the streets near my house singing preston songs for about an hour

Lost 1-0 to a west ham side who we were far better than. Beat them 3 times already that season and Billy Davies got it all wrong. Bobby Fucking Zamora.

2005-06: Drew 1-1 at Elland Road in the first leg, unbelievable night with Nuge again scoring a great goal. Danced through the defence to score. I remember at half time it was chaos.
This prompted Billy Davies to say something like "we've done the hard bit" and the newspaper to quote him as "job done" which then bit us on the ass when Leeds won at Deepdale. (Cresswell getting sent off was funny though)

2008-09: getting to the play offs was better than being in them. We beat Cardiff 6-0 in March I think, and we had to win our last 4 games. One of which was away at Brum and we were 1-0 down before McKenna equalised and then Ross Wallace scored a free kick in the 90th minute. Absolute scenes in the away end. Last day of the season we beat QPR 2-1 and Cardiff lost at Wednesday and we got in courtesy of one more goal scored than Cardiff

We then lost to Sheff Utd who let Burnley fucking beat them, wankers.

2013-14: Ergh, Steve Evans.

Youve got to remember as well as our 6 playoff defeats there are also 4 fa cup semi final defeats and 2 league cup semi final defeats in that time too so id say we are without doubt the biggest bottling bastards in the country. We definitely would of done what pne did yday just as we did the other year by giving promotion to wednesday.

Come on Preston, don't give those Blackpool fans any crumbs of comfort.

I imagine they've already got a big "10" thread set up on their forum if you fail, but you're the best team in the play-offs by far, and past records shouldn't really count for anything.

Mine are:

2004/05 - Back when STFC had a 'kids for a quid' offer on all League games during a season so I attended nearly every home fixture. Dominated Brighton over two legs and were 2-1 up in injury time of the second when Adam fucking Virgo popped up with the equaliser. Lost on penalties eventually.

2009/10 - Beat Charlton on penalties after an epic second leg to make the final and came a Charlie Austin bobble away from Championship football. Got relegated the following season after losing nearly all of our best players.

2012/13 - Top of the table in February before selling Ritchie and losing Di Canio, we just about made the play-offs in the end. An Aden Flint injury time equaliser in the second leg forced extra time and penalties, where we weren't as luck as we were three seasons earlier.

2014/15 - Who knows. We've faced penalties in each of the three play-off campaigns I've endured so reckon we may have to again.

Didn't you also get relegated through the play-offs? This was during a period shortly after the play-offs were introduced when the four teams contesting for a place in the higher division included a team 3rd/4th from bottom in the league above, but they scrapped that system pretty quickly.

We were one of the first teams to get promoted through that system, cant remember who against but want to say Vs Accrington Stanley.

Twenty years since the last Chesterfield play-off match I went to. Or anyone actually. Won easily at Wembley from memory.

I think we have the mental strength to do well against Preston. Whether that's enough to overcome to shortfall in quality who knows.

This is gonna really bug me now. Have a football trivia book back home and am 90% sure I remember us being listed as one of the first ever football play-off winners...it was ages ago though and all I can find is that the play offs started in 1986/1987 but this would've been well before then.

Nah think your getting confused mate with something else. It definitely hasn't happened since the playoffs were invented so not sure what it could be.

Urgh...was about 12 when I read it I guess.

Got onto the 1890/1891 season and 'The Wednesday' went up in fourth (team in third didn't so am assuming they had some play-off system) whilst Accrington finished 4th bottom in the league above (but no mention of their relegation). Have found this which suggests 'The Wednesday' did win an aggregate game against Accrington that season 7-6 so could be that I was thinking of...which would be even more embarrassing!

Preston losing to a team 20 points behind them after losing one in 19 would be ridiculous, in these exceptional circumstances they should really get a bye to the final.

If they're good enough, they'll beat us.

I think blade1889 is referring to this:

http://www.sheffieldunited-mad.co.uk/league_tables/1892_1893/sheffield_united/index.shtml

It was called test matches rather than play-offs but was a similar system to the one used in the late 1980s.

And they did beat a club called Accrington (not Stanley) to go up and relegate them, but they weren't the same club as the one that went bust in the 1960s, nor is there any lineage between the two (unlike that club and the current Accrington Stanley).

Chesterfield vs PNE seems the slightly more appealing. Can see Sheff Utd vs Swindon being a dire 0-0 er. (Que 7 goal thriller)
