Fair to say Bryce Harper is locked in.

Pineda has struck out 15 Orioles today. Shame he's at 106 pitches, so won't beat Guidry's record.

Finished the day with 16 strikeouts on 111 pitches, and as per usual, no walks.

Saw this on Twitter today, not sure how true it is, but if it is, wow!

Over the years, the Mariners have essentially traded Adam Jones, Pineda, Choo, & Fister for Furbush, Bedard, Ben Broussard, & Jesus Montero.

Where do the rules stand on a pitcher hitting the player with a pitch. Watching the Royals and Rangers atm and Dyson has just been hit on the arm, this one wasn't intentional but looked quite painful, have seen it done what looks like on purpose before though. I know it's an automatic walk but do the governing bodies frown upon it?

Some of it is allowed to go on as a bit of 'the game policing itself' sort of a dealio (beisbol is _very_ big on unwritten rules, etiquette, codes of honour etc, as you've probably gathered...). So a fastball in the ribs or the backside is generally given a pass, even when it's pretty obviously deliberate.

But if it escalates, gets tit for tat, or is up near the head the umpires will warn both benches and the next HBP is an automatic ejection for the pitcher and his manager. Over a series or season these things often tend to snowball, and obviously a 97mph fastball winging past a guy's ear or a massive bench clearing brawl can turn out pretty awfully, so there has to be a line.

Fines and suspensions are common when it gets like that, but suspensions for pitchers are often a bit of a joke, because they can just skip their regular spot in the rotation and pitch with an extra couple of days rest, so often it's not all that much of a punishment.

Arod got hit Monday night against the Rays and he wasn't happy about it, hence why he stole 2nd base in the 9th inning of an 11-5 game. As CF says, unwritten rules.

I love it, had no idea this kind of thing happened so often in baseball, need to catch more games.

I'd forgotten about that Nyjer Morgan one. Fuckin hell. Clothesline from hell.

> Footnote to the Royals/Cards one... "fortunately looks like no-one is injured!" says the comms. Yeah except Jason LaRue who suffered a career ending concussion from getting kicked in the heed, sooooo....

Mariners are wearing Seattle Steelheads Negro Leagues throwback unis tonight and they are pretty sweet.

Red Sox ones are alright.

Marlins have sacked Redmond. Very surprised at that, it's not been a great start to the season but surely that's too soon?!

I've been in Florida 8 days and I haven't seen a live pitch in the flesh, or on TV! That's what happens when you go to Disney World and Universal Studios I guess. Fly back tomorrow though :(

I've not missed much with the evil empire though, 1-10 since I've been gone. Have seen the 'highlights' of Garrett Jones pitching the 9th today though. Nowt better than a proper bench clearing fight or a position player pitching.

It's Memorial Day, in which America celebrates those who fell Defending Freedom™ by having her Major League Baseball franchises wear appalling camo defaced uniforms!

Rodriguez (shall we start calling him E-ROD already?) on his debut: 7.2IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB, 7K.

Not bad, kid.

He was such a good get in the Miller trade. Not bad for half a season of a reliever!

Underrated part of being fucking terrible last year: never being on Fox. I had forgotten this misery.

I've never played the game before, but why is it difficult for a power pitcher, with control, to change his game? It's baseball, not chess after all.

This question bought to you as a result of watching CC Sabathia pitch.

So four fifths of our rotation now sit injured along with someone who would now be in the rotation if they weren't also injured. Yet our pitching factory keeps soldiering on. Can't wait get Moore, Smyly and Odorizzi back.

I'm enjoying the Twins winning (mostly) after the last few years of Ron Gardenhire's poor management. Paul Molitor for manager of the year just for getting the Twins close to the lead in the AL Central.
