I'm liking the start from he openers. Seeing off the new ball well and leaving well.
It's all about playing the match co editions. New Zealand are wanting a fast paced game. Our openers taking time out the game now only sees off the new ball, but increased the likelihood that Mccullum will leave in vastly attacking fields when stokes root and Buttler are at the crease.

The longer our top order frustrates the quicker our lower order will score I suspect

Good first session with the bat. Both openers looking fairly settled. Desperate for both of them to get runs, certainly believe Lyth is the future - and we need Cook in form for the Ashes.

Great work, Chef. Say what you want about his captaincy, no one can argue his world class ability as an opening batsman. Focusing just on Test cricket has seen him return to his imperious best.

This partnership also making a mockery of the claims that its a 200 pitch from the pundits. That said, this next hour is going to be tough. The warmer weather is seeing the ball start to move late.

50 for Lyth - dug in well.

Both openers built solid foundations for a high scoring innings.

What date??

Haha no idea to be honest mate, I posted that yesterday after a few drinks and we were in the middle of having Surrey's pants down.

From the limited cricket I saw yesterday, it's clearly a batting pitch. Itll swing and seem early morning, but with the weather set fair I actually expect us to get close to 500 first innings. Not easy, but just a feeling

Two sessions in and this looks likely.

The ball hits Lyth's stumps but the bails don't come off.

Incredible, it really is his day.

Cracking batting performance this. With only 4 bowlers, they are going to be knackered midway into tomorrow.

Typical test cricket at Headingley. Sun is out and England cruise to 180-0. 2 hours later, its gloomy with the new ball and we are collapsing at 247-5 with Stokes, Root and Lyth all out. We will need to come back tommorrow and keep Buttler/Bell/Ali for at the crease for as long as possible. A commanding match winning situation with a big 100+ lead, now looks like a finely balance test match with us likely ending up behind after an innings each.

Balance caused that for me. Running out Lyth then giving his wicket away with shit play. It really put the wind in their sails

Good day out as always. Very very boring after tea for the 1st 45 mins as soon as lyth got his ton we went to the boozer. Absolutely stunned to see what happened after that. Hopefully the weather stays good we can match there score and go from there.

Normal service resumed then.

What a way to throw away such a commanding start - and now we're on the back foot.

Absolute shambles.

The wickets have fallen playing tentatively against the moving ball. Swing the bat. Stokes and buttler should have gone after the new ball

It's a bowling morning. Need to get as close to the NZ total as possible and hope for a great bowling performance.

Very useful partnership and the right way to play against a moving ball. You'll get out blocking, as shown by the 6 above them

Just need a great bowling session. chasing in the 4th innings will be so so tough

Important little partnership is this from Wood and Broad - both out there with attacking mindsets and looking to score freely.

Good stuff - 50 partnership up off 43 balls.

Level. The match is going to come down to luck. Who gets to bat longest when he Suns out.
Two spells with the new ball. Need to get line and length rigt. Don't want the ball getting wet after crashing into the boundary

Even with the scores being level, it's still massive advantage NZ IMO.

We have to bat a 4th Innings on this pitch where rough is being created, in predicted overcast conditions over the next two days.

Need early wickets now.
