Tom Bender has signed a new 6 month deal. Good player, tall left back with a good throw.

Might also mean Marcus Kelly could be freed up to play further forward, as including him we now have 3 left backs.

He has something. Quite quick and has a trick or two. Can play left or right.

I actually think Chester have made some decent signings and they can expect to have an improved season
It says on Wiki that Chapell is 5' 9", but I've just had a text to say he's more like 5' 6".
Any ideas?

Surprised by some of comments regarding Chappel from town fans.

he played like 2/3 times and scored a tap in at back post, did nothing else...

He actually played a part in 6 games for us last season. 3 times it was just the last 5 minutes or so as a sub but he did play the full 2nd half in the home defeat to Wrexham, plus the full 90 minutes against both Southport and Aldershot. As I said though he didn't really impress me and I'm quite happy that he hasn't signed on permanently.

Thanks Sparrow, they obviously don't count the £500K that Mr Fenty puts in every season.
Errrrm yes we do? You sound pretty bitter, is there anything you would like to get off your chest?

We all know the staffing budget was 1.4mill in 2014. But that includes all backroom staff and coaching staff.

Decide for yourselves how much of that "counts"

Butler's a good signing. Wish we were in for him again.

It also includes the people who work in the club shop, the people who pour the pints in the bar and unless RB is suggesting Paul Hurst hires the women who clean the changing rooms after the games as part of his playing budget too then i'm failing to see the relevance of our 'staffing budget'.

It's the playing budget he works on. I can see it now, 'Former Travelodge cleaner Linda signs for Grimsby on a 50k p/w deal, she'll be tasked with cleaning the showers after the games, Grimsby fended off football league interest for the much sought after 79 year old sweeper'

Where have people plucked 1.3 million from. The highest our playing budget has been since we have been down here was 1 million and that was the season we came down. I would estimate it being around 800k now + the around 100k from operation promotion.

The reason I put it the way I did is because some stuff would surely count towards giving you an advantage. Obviously those in the bars etc do not. But, if you're paying for a larger coaching staff, more fitness and conditioning experts, analyst etc. then whilst they aren't part of the playing budget - they contribute to the team and are relevant.

But, in all honesty it doesn't really matter - you have a top 5 budget, top 3 at a push, but it's all about how it gets used.

Christ you lot really do clutch at straws sometimes. Where on earth did you hear a figure like that!?

Me bitter ... I ain't bitter mate. When your team is folded because the man at the top is using your team to launder money and the guy that's providing the money is the victim of a hit and the money stream closes ..... that's when to be bitter. I'm actually looking forward to the season and realise that it's not all about money, although it's clearly not a level playing field. We may have a minscule budget but we've got a top 3 manager.

Btw that figure was quoted on here by one of your supporters.

Where in football is a level playing field?

As I say every time these arguments come up, would you rather have a large budget paid for by a money man and be competitive? or a lower budget and be fan owned and probably finish mid-table.

Of course it's not a level playing field, that's due to where this league is in the pyramid of football. Only in the PL is there such a huge gap between the top and the bottom. We're playing teams now who (and I don't mean this to sound patronising) would never have thought they'd be playing us a in league fixture and vice versa. This is the one league in the country where full time clubs play against part time ones every weekend, it's not going to be level. That cannot be helped. But 'smaller' clubs have this obsession with our budgets, forgetting we get bigger attendances and bigger outside revenue than you get, so we're going to have a bigger budget. We've been propped up by Fenty for years, it's not exactly helped us has it?

I would be amazed if you found a quote that stated that was our budget from a Grimsby fan.

Who in this league or even the league above has fitness staff, conditioning experts, analysts? We don't even have any scouts!

We have the manager, the assistant manager (who was also a player till he retired this pre-season) and the physio. No other coaching staff, or fitness experts and whatever else you think some non-league club is likely to have. If we get lucky we might find a goalkeeping coach again but we haven't been able to find one since ours left the other season.

Hence, I used the word: IF. We haven't got them but god knows what other teams have on their staff.

Please tell me you're not as simple as that statement suggests?

I wish football clubs were forced to publish their budget every season. Not for transparency or any of that bullshit, but to settle 80% of arguments between lower league football fans on message boards.

Yes but you referenced it towards us, claiming our 1.4m in wages was because we pay for loads of experts to help our players and compete, when we don't. Really the only non-playing staff what go towards coaching as you put it, is the manager, assistant and physio.

Its a simple question as its always the fan owned clubs that try and preach about budgets and be high and mighty about how amazing they are because they are fan owned, yet complain because other clubs spend more than them.

A Grimsby supporter posted on here just after your play-off defeat that if you'd had the £1.3 m from the start of the season you'd have won the league ...honest, I'm not making that up

If we'd had £12m from the start of the season we'd have probably won it too. Doesn't mean that's our budget.

Mangan, Norwood and Brabin. The personality in that dressing room will be sky high.
