It Follows

This is a tough one to review. It's been critically acclaimed and rating wise it makes it one of the best horror films of recent times. The problem I had with it...............it's not scary. I didn't feel scared once during the entire thing. It doesn't set out to be a jumpy movie but more to play on your fears and to put yourself in a situation where something is forever stalking you with no relenting. In terms of it spooking you that way, it does an alright job. It also build tension here and there to the point where in every camera shot, you're searching the background for 'the thing'. However, i kind of feel this was a film with an outstanding concept that just........well.....could have been scarier. There were too many scenes where the characters were speculating about whether the girl was going mad or not where there should have been more manifestations of the actual stalking demon.

There could have been some real tense scenes in some real claustrophobic environments. It just fell a little bit flat for me and the scene towards the end where the whole group are together was just a little bit too ridiculous I thought.

I did like the poignant ending which does give an opportunity of a sequel. If they do make one, go with the same cast, yet make it more claustrophobic and more intense. There's real potential there for the future.

7/10 - A great concept yet a slightly underwhelming film, albeit one that was well shot and maintained a sense of realism around the madness (bar one stupid scene towards the end at a swimming pool).

Gore and more gore. A bloke torn to bits by a group tarantulas...excellent. Best bit is when that ginger kid gets her head blown to bits. 10/10.

Didn't expect you to rate it so highly to be honest, it's horribly dated like most of Fulci's flicks but still loads of fun! I may go through the Lucio Fulci catalogue soon.

The Lion King
I'm 27 years old and I've spent the latter part of my evening watching this little gem, all on my own. It's amazing, one of the best films of all time and I ain't even bovvered how it makes me look like a 12 year old girl. 9/10.

Everybody I know always goes on about the bloody Lion King, so I have decided to watch it one day - got a copy sitting here to watch when I can be arsed watching a cartoon lion prancing around singing Elton John songs! :D

The Trial (1962)

Based on Kafka's novel and directed by Orson Welles, this was surreal, depressing and utterly hopeless (as it was meant to be I suppose). I could write a few paragraphs about it, but I'm too tired to tonight. Its not everyone's cup of tea this, but it was good for what it was.

Stretch (2014)
A hard-luck limo driver struggles to go straight and pay off a debt to his bookie. He takes on a job with a crazed passenger, whose sought-after ledger implicates some seriously dangerous criminals.

What a mental film. Funny, bizarre and very entertaining.

Jessica Alba is in it, too. The sexy cow.

7.5/10

Enjoyed it.

SLOW WEST
Just back from seeing it at the Picture House. Western set in sparsely populated Colorado Territory (1870). Brilliantly filmed in NZ with Scottish flashbacks. Young innocent Scot journeying west in search for love of his life and father, joins up with Clint Eastwood type bounty hunter, crosses gang of bounty hunters. Feels authentic, with some nice touches as the story develops. Hint of Meek's Cutoff and Outlaw Josey Wales (minus the comedy) about it but not in the same league and not as much going on. Well worth the watch.

The Pawnbroker [1964]

An embittered Auschwitz survivor now living as a pawnbroker in New York tries to live out his life in peace and solitude, all the while pushing himself away from humanity, becoming an emotionless husk and hating everyone he meets. However, his experiences and loss of his family at Auschwitz begin to gnaw away at him and he starts to topple over the edge as everyday things and the people he deal with remind him of his time there.

A powerful film from the ever brilliant director Sidney Lumet and perfect casting of the great Rod Steiger make this at times a harrowing watch even to this day, and the cruelty of what happens to Steiger's character and also by him makes for some uncomfortable viewing at times.

Gone Girl (2014)

Brilliant film overall, though I found the beginning was long winded. Eventually things pick up and it did well to keep me guessing where the hell the plot was gonna go, not your conventional missing persons story that's for sure. Did well to creep the shit outa me towards the end too, 8/10.

Couild see the ending long before it came, good film but could have been better if it didn't rush the ending.

Killer Elite (2011)

Expected better from a film with Robert De Niro in it but then again i should have known it wouldn't be up to much having Jason /statham and Clive Owen in it, a pretty poor film. 4/10.

Been doing my yearly watch of the V film series and as usual whack the review on here to make sure any newbies know about it and tempt them to see it.

Brilliant brilliant series, its top Sci-fi at its best and just a well worked flm series top to bottom.

first 3 films were 10/10 for me, the forth film was probably the weakest, but weak as in 9/10 and to be honest it has the brilliant conversion scenes and the Baby scene which is iconic and superb.

picks up again for the 5th, although the ending is abit so-so but i believe the main writer had big issues with the film makers by then so it sort've fell apart abit. its a 9 or 10/10 finish.

I think what steals the movies is the baddies who are just great parts, Dianna the visitor scientist/leader is utter cruel, sly, devious and deliciously played, Daniel the stroppy teen who decides to side with the visitors for own gain turning on his friends and family in process is a great character and the posh woman who decides to back the visitors to increase her position in the social standings is excellently played.

with some great villains you sort've cannot wait for their comeuppance in the end.

add in a great backstory and some massive twists throughout and well its just great to watch.

10/10 for all 5 films in series. Its original mini series then Final battle if you ever want DVD's...only £5.31 well worth it.

Entertaining but cheesy as anything...but what do you expect? Although some of the lazy script writing was annoying.

Europa Report.
"When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean and single-celled life exists on one of Jupiter's moons, six astronauts embark on an ill-fated exploratory mission."

What a load of absolute nonsense. A big fat steaming pile of dogshit.

Riddled with all the clichéd space disasters, brought about by inexplicably shoddy equipment & irrational human behaviour.

Ripped space suits, characters getting left floating around in space while the others look on seemingly not at all arsed; thruster failure, electrical failure, loss of communication, unstable terrain.....the fucking works.

I hate it. Definitely in the top 10 shittest films I've ever seen. I genuinely feel robbed of my precious time.

What Lies Beneath

Occasionally I get in a mood to watch an actor's collection of films. For some reason, I have an urge to watch Harrison Ford films so planning to watch Patriot Games (never got round to watching it), The Devil's Own and other classics like the Fugitive etc.

But yeah, What Lies Beneath. I hadn't seen this for years but remembered it as being very good and it didn't disappoint. I really like how the film slowly builds in one direction and then suddenly lurches in another, yet it's clear why it went in the initial direction. Michelle Pfeiffer is superb throughout and the ending is a superb 20-30 minute thrill ride. I love the bath bit towards the end as well, they nail the psychology.

A strong 8.5/10.

We Are Marshall [2007]

Don't mind a sports movie now and again, this one was about a town that loses its American Football students team in a plane crash and then the efforts to resurrect the team by getting in players from all over the place. Decent in its own way, though very soppy with loads of men crying throughout, Ian McShane miscast entirely as a yank, and a turn by Matthew McConaughey where he talks through the side of his mouth the whole time, reminiscent of a stroke victim.

Rosemary's Baby [1968]

I like Polanski's films, always have done, and never seen this before though I knew what it was about. However I found it disappointing tbh. The fear and paranoia of Farrow's character for her unborn child is very well done, and it was an interesting story, particularly for the day, but it just didn't grab me like some of his other films.

5/10

Blue Ruin [2013]

A troubled vagrant finds out the man who killed his parents is to be released from jail, and so heads out to seek revenge; however, not all is what it seems and he soon ends up in an impossible situation.

This was very good; what starts off as a simple revenge quest, becomes something else, and the spontaneity of it is very well done. It doesn't hang around too long either at 90 minutes, which is perfect for what it is.
