I know, once again I'm creating a thread for our next league match when we still have a cup game to play in between, but the Hartlepool thread was so much fun I'm doing it again. Great to have these two huge league encounters in a row, we've been waiting for a long time to renew our rivalry with Barnet (granted I would have preferred it to happen without us getting relegated to League One, but you can't control the universe).

Wouldn't Jabo v John (as in Akinde) be a better battle?

Is every one of our match threads going to be 'Jabo v'?

We're going to look like right Muggs if his scoring touch evaporates, but I think we've a good chance of winning this one.

This is Barnet ffs. We won't beat Barnet at Brunton Park.

They've even spunked all over us at Brunton park the season we won League 2, and they only jus avoided the drop that season!

amazing its sort've 10 years to when we had our wee rivalry..............haha it was a lot of fun as one of them couple of Carlisle fans who back then ventured onto confguide for the explosion of bickering and arguments at the time.

We were quite the bitter lot back then at the thought someone dare come to BP and beat us.....then got serious with bricks thrown, then got really serious over evil Champagne comments and worse on confguide................to be fair Barnet have some decent fans it got quite crappy on confguide so ended up for a short while bizarrely on a Scarborough FC forum with groups of other conference fans in some weird twisted non-logical way mostly at the time to keep out of the way of the ridiculous OTT confguide rants but ended up staying there and confguide for that season......shame Scarborough went bust, had some very nice fans.

of course then came that Tuesday night game which any Carlisle fan who went now seems to want Death and destruction to Barnet and anything or anyone who had a link to Barnet that night  and there we go. I still think is afew up here will have a good buzz if we can stuff em this week and if Barnet win they shall be grumbling all season over it.

at least it makes what is really a non-event game a lot more interesting.

very important game, if we can win tonight and then follow it up on sat and then suddenly win 4 games in a row and end that (can only ever win 3 in row) stuff, then have some very easy looking games to follow, that could well see us on a run.

This 'rivalry' came about during 2004/05 as a result of our 3-1 win at Brunton Park when Carlisle were snapping at our heels at the top of the Conference. There were a couple of controversial referee calls in that match (which went our way) which added to the fractiousness of the occasion. Paul Simpson, the then Carlisle boss, showed his utter lack of class by making a sexist comment to our then physio (something along the lines of 'are you bringing the team their tea?') whereupon she replied that champagne would be a more fitting drink.
I don't know what else there was that contributed to this rivalry!
And which Tuesday match are you referring to, dave?

Now I want you to have an opportunity of seeing Muggles in action, even though just like every Barnet fan I don't want him to play any part in the match. He'll have more touches of the ball with his hands than with his feet, I can guarantee that.

its quite a ridiculous but simple wee rivalry.

Began in the conference, back when confguide was full of the tinpot brigade and the snobby ex-league brigade who bickered and swiped at each other back and forth (before the current situation where we now have more ex-league anyway in conference)

and posting on confguide at the time you'd see the tinpotter fans hunt around the fans forums of them snobby big clubs and scour the posts for an odd comment of arrogance and then chuck it back onto confguide in a disgruntled rant.................we got lucky due to Yorks 'arsenal of the conference' stuff.

we started unbeaten and it wasn't popular in the hope the ex-league club fails atmosphere until of course we played barnet at hope who had the gall to come to our ground and beat us. I think then some of our morons chucked bricks into the away end and confguide went loopy with arguments and bickering arguments over whose knickers were round the ankles of who etc, etc went on for couple of weeks if I remember.

then add in our manager at the time ranting over some whisperings that he had heard Barnets managers, sons, neighbours, gardeners, nephew had commented about Champagne on ice and how arrogant Barnet were and then it caused more conflicts.

it then got worse in the 2nd fixture at Underhill, I never went but Carlisle fans who did sort've detest anything Barnet related with a passion and believe it involved a lot of rubbing our faces in it style, add in a referee playing 47 years of injury time to allow them an equlilizer at the death........led to more bickering moaning, complaints, etc, etc That was the Tuesday game I meant 2nd last match of season if I remember and you lifted trophy after.

and well it just stuck, especially to tw*ttish players like Nicky Bailey (that player vs Carlisle feud went from conf to L2 to L1)

but it was a lot of fun.

He's referring to the match at your place in that conference season. Where we had 2 players sent off for god knows what, we leading 1-0 with 4 minutes of added time to be played, then somehow you equalised in the 100th minute.

I may have slightly exaggerated the times, but you get my drift.

By the way southerners, when Dave says wee rivalry, he means small rivalry. He's Scottish (I think).

to be fair rubes version is correct and I think our side got abit OTT on it all, but it was one of the fun aspects of the conference was the fact if you were a large ex-league club you were all b*stards according to confguide.

its been fun to drag it along I suppose, wish i'd got to that night game to see what really wound some of ours up.

Good summary dave.
I was at the return fixture at Underhill. Was it before the introduction of the current measure that is now place where the 4th official shows how much time should be added on at the end of each half?
Anyway we would have equalised earlier if we hadn't decided to entrust the penalty we had been awarded to Simon Clist who was the only outfield player in our team who hadn't scored that season (He did an Eddie Stein with the penalty - blasting it over).
I didn't realise that you carried on a Nicky Bailey rivalry after we sold him!

I've never known that not to be done. It was certainly done in that season and long before in the 90s

It was done in Derek Lacey's time, because he used to always ask someone for the 'red number'... but maybe it wasn't done in the Conference at that time.
I'm almost certain it was done in the conference. I'd have noticed if it wasn't, like I say, in all my years watching football I've never known there not to be a number showing added time.

This thread was started so early I completely missed it. Muggleton will have a blinder and achieve his ambition of throwing the ball the width of the pitch.

Keith Curle says Barnet could be our toughest game so far. He says they've played better than their points total deserves and have players that can hurt us.

Any carlisle fan who thinks this is a home banker could be in for a surprise.

I wouldn't class this a 'home banker', but I do fancy us, especially at home. I'm sure we're like 9 unbeaten at Brunton Park, so I think we're capable of a win at the weekend. I agree with Curle though, I like the look of Barnet and think they'll have a good season. I'd also argue we've played better than our points tally suggests.

Will be a tough game, but I'll predict a home win, 3-1 Carlisle.

Refwatch; Ref for Carlisle v Barnet is Nigel Miller, a 54 year old baldie from Durham. FL ref for 12 years. Ex cop, now breeds birds for a living. Looks like something out of a particularly bad Guy Ritchie movie. Ashley Barnes got a 7 game ban for tripping him two seasons ago in the Brighton v Bolton match. Loves Carlisle - reffed them 12 times, 11 at Brunton Park; won 7, drew 3, lost 1. Reffed Barnet 3 times (1-1-1). In 35 L2 games last season he gave 88 Y & 1 R - low.

We currently lack the ability to generate clear cut chances and are failing to take our half chances so if Carlisle score twice we are out of it. This is really noticable when a team scores and then sits back as we appear incapable of unlocking an organised defence.
That said Mclean has a mean shot on him and Batt might actually be turning the corner and remembering what his feet are for. We are solid at the back but tend to gift a goal. Gambin on his day can destroy a team, sadly it's hit and miss.
Big John is finding it harder than most thought and really showing how much better defences are at this level. They are quicker so he doesn't get away and they stay on their feet rather than dive in. He is still a threat but we have lost so much creativity from last season that he just isn't getting the same quality of service.
We hit the woodwork 3 times and had 2 cleared off the line last week, convert those kind of chances into goals and we will be in a happier place.

Well there's a good chance we'll score twice, but at the same time if ever there was a chance for Barnet to notch a few goals, we're the team, and we don't sit back. We have the worst defence in the league (as per every season). Until we improve that defence, we're not going to be winning back to back games like some of our fans seem to think after beating Hartlepool.

Troubling news for Carlisle fans - I am hearing whispers that the great man has not been awarded the League Two player of the month award. Who knows how this (alleged) blow will affect him come match day...?

More concerned he would be jinxed if he had won it.

It'll be a fix if Jabo isn't Player of the Month, considering he's top scorer in England. However, the award is cursed, so I wouldn't be too disappointed if he didn't win.

I wish we'd come into this game off the back of a win midweek than defeat, I wanted some good solid momentum to try and build a big winning run and end that 3 win only hoodoo we have.

at least Gillespie is back, I have absolute zero confidence in Hanford we need a new back-up.

Tough tough game, I still think Barnet will end up in top 7, I sort've hope we have a game where Jabo fails to make an impact as a big test for us is finding out how we cope when he doesn't sort our problems out himself, but in another way he needs to score to keep confidence going.

We will 100% concede at least 1 goal the entire basis of the game is us playing 3-3-4 and hoping our 4 up front approach scores more than them..................simple as that.

we did seem to play 4 in our own half vs Wimbledon but it was clearly boring as went back to 3 vs hartlepool
