I remember my first time I had to drive on the motorway. I'd just passed my test and my manager asked me to do a delivery to Birmingham in a Transit van which I'd never driven before in the rain. I was a fucking wreck when I got back to our branch.

Statistically motorways are the safest roads to drive on, but being able to judge time and distances at high speeds is imperative and it's for that reason I'd rather be sat next to an experienced driver than a new one on the motorway.

Surely it's far easier for new drivers to drive in a straight line down a motorway as opposed to the twists and turns of busy streets with all the traffic lights, junctions, moronic cyclists etc? inb4pedalbikeweirdosgetmad

Soon as I passed my test I drove 150 miles to Blackpool, and I were far more confident driving on motorways than trying to get my head around complicated one way systems and shit.

Isn't it more because, like Red says, new drivers generally won't have driven at near motorway speeds so will lack experience of the observation skills etc. required when going that fast? I've got my test soon and I know I'll have a pass plus/motorway lessons at least with my instructor when I eventually pass.

We're talking about people that have passed their practical test, right? You go up and down a dual carriageway several times when you're learning to drive. Or I did at least. That's got to be standard practice for all learners surely?
