He's just signed a 5 year deal, and if he still wants to leave next summer we will sell him for £50 million plus, simple as that, there will be plenty of takers, the biggest thing was how Chelsea went about it and when ( i week left before they made a respectable offer of £37 million).......we don't roll over like other clubs

A couple of questions.

A) Why make such a big deal about keeping him at the club this year, only to sell him next year?

B) How can you know you'll get a bid of £50 million next year? I very much doubt anyone would be willing to go beyond 40 - it's a huge and unnecessary risk.

From your comments it seems that the main reason you want to keep him is because of principle and you not wanting to lose face by selling to Chelsea. To me, that's not a great reason to keep him.

He could get his legs broken in his next match.

On what planet is any club going to bid £50m plus for John Stones?

No decent offer was made and it was with 5 days to go.

The lad can only improve he has all the ball skill and reads the game very well already he just needs to fill out. The risk is with Chelsea too he break his leg on debut, we are in a lose situation.

bit of truth in that but would you sell your best player with 5 days before transfer window shuts

Admittedly, that's far from ideal. But this situation shouldn't have been dragged out this long.

It'd be interesting to know whether John Stones made Everton aware of his desire to leave privately, before submitting a transfer request. If he didn't, then he's been a knobber for leaving the club up shit creek so close to the end of the window, but I find that hard to believe. If Everton were aware that he wanted to join Chelsea when this started a couple of weeks ago, they've only got themselves to blame for having such little time left to find a replacement should one be needed.

Also, the club would surely have possible targets in mind. Given they'd have a lot of cash to re-invest I'd be surprised if they couldn't make something happen.

The Barca and Madrid scouts don't go to small clubs. They won't come calling. ;)

Seems to me that Everton (not Martinez) are dragging their heels, and making such noise about this with the intent of selling too late to really re-invest the transfer fee. That way, they'll make £40m odd, sign Ashley Cole on a free (who cares what position he is), many fans will direct their frustrations at Stones and Chelsea instead of teh Everton board, and by the time the next transfer window rolls round nothing more will ever be said about any of it.

I think Martinez went from being a tad overrated prior to his appointment to being oddly unappreciated. Managers simply don't have as much control over transfers as our uninformed narratives like to believe. When he had an actual defense in his first season, Everton achieved their highest point total in Premier League history. Every manager will struggle with a defense reliant on players in their downturn.

Appears it's also because Everton are trying to buy out the sell-on clause Barnsley have for Stones. The only just, moral club left in the cesspit that is the modern Premier League are trying to prevent the club who produced Stones from getting a bit more money to make themselves even more money.

Can't be true.

I wouldn't expect fans of a club who spent 16 million on Balotelli and 16 million on glen johnson to understand finance in football......you've spunked zillions trying to catch the the top 4 and failed miserably and we all laugh at you every year........:2thumb:

This saga's definitely over now. We're augmenting our squad with some cut price Senegalese defender that no one's ever heard of so Martinez can probably stop relentlessly bleating to the press now. Maybe we'll come back in Jan/next summer or perhaps we'll move on to other targets *shrug*

It doesn't look like anything going to happen now, unless Jose pulls £40-£50 million out the bag. It would shock me if he left, Everton don't have time to get a replacement. Jose's been beaten on this one.
