Vardy is the only England striker with a league goal this season.

I actually rate Rooney in an England shirt, i know you can't prove nothing against San Marino etc but he is currently doing why is asked of him in the national side, the whole team and not just Rooney under perform at tournaments if we are being honest. Looking forward to going San Marino Saturday, might even witness the scoring record go, although I admit it would be better to do it in an important game against quality opposition!

well we're now ranked lower than Wales.

Jermain Defoe has two, should we call him up?

Rooney deserves to play for England, as regardless of the level of opposition, he's scored goals.

The media love it.

When we're flying high, they mock it and sarcastically mention that we're better than those teams, but when we slip down a bit they bring up all the smaller nations that are above us.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
He's got to be experimental for these two games. If he starts with players like Rooney and Hart then it's mental.

Give the fringe players a run in meaningless games.

He'll start Rooney, but wouldn't be surprised if he gave one of the keepers a run-out in Lithuania.

We need to start gelling, play a squad you'd want to play with in the Euros and get them linking up. Fannying about with fringe players is pointless as the moment.

I agree, although I can understand Hodgson wanting to try out a couple of players in non-competitive games.

But the majority of the starting line-up should be first team players.

We have games against Spain, France and Germany plus a few others to do that.

We do, but we've already qualified so we can use the games against the better teams to play out strongest team and see how we get on.

Results might not count, but it would give the players confidence if they can beat the bigger teams.

EDIT: It seems you were agreeing, I misread the reply. Sorry. It's too early

In the case, I'd say start a strong team and have a young bench. Hodgson messes about too often trying different players in different systems, he needs to stick to something and get the players on a similar wavelength.

The tournament is months away, and after these two we have no more competitive matches.

It's an amazing opportunity to give some younger players genuine, competitive international experience rather than 20 minutes at the end of a friendly when the opposition are doing the same thing.

I guess it's worked well and brought us success over recent years. Best to stick with the way things have been done, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Gutted that Callum Wilson got injured, not sure if he'd actually have got into the squad but it's nice to hear the comments from Hodgson about being close all the same. Although it seems daft if he's suddenly got into senior squad contention after a few PL goals, when he ripped the Championship apart last season and rarely got U21 caps.

Regarding the strength of team to select. For the most part, I think we know what our side is likely to look like for the next few years. May as well try and get some consistency and cohesion in there.

The entire first choice midfield is missing, plus we have no idea if or how Sturridge will slot in. I don't think there's much chance of getting consistency among the players, even if there was much scope for that in international football in the first place. If we have these injuries to contend with, then I'd rather just experiment and not show our hand.

You make a good point, but if Roy knows his best eleven, and I'm not convinced that he does, he should get them on the pitch together for as long as possible. If any of those players are unavailable, then whoever replaces them has a chance to show that they belong in the team and lets Hodgson see how they fit into the team.

Obviously that only works if we have a game plan that we 'try' and stick to and don't chop and change every five minutes.

Come on Roy. Meaningless game, tournament is a long way of still. There are plenty of friendlies to gel a side for the tournament. Let's see some different faces.

And if Rooney starts a game after missing training for two days this week, with his form and I a game that doesn't matter, then we'll know that the England manager is contractually obliged to play the current 'talisman' in every fucking game.

Rooney is travelling home when they fly out to Lithuania so I doubt he'll be risked.

Eric Dier called up - looks like a very youthful squad.

I really like Dier, even more so since he's shown promise as a defensive midfielder, an area we lack in.
