Anyone ever celebrated the Buddhist festival Songkran in Thailand, or the Hindu Holi festival in India. These religious people sure know how to party!

Was in Delhi for Holi the year before last. Had to go to the airport in among the celebrations and the taxi was absolutely covered in bright paint b the time we got there. Incredible experience.

Songkran is Thai new year not a Buddhist festival.

Considered starting a new thread on Christmas but on reflection reckoned there's a couple of reasons for posting here.
A survey of 1,000 children (5-12yo) last year, commissioned by Brent Cross, discovered that:

20% believed Jesus Christ played for Chelsea and 35% thought Jesus was born at the South Pole.
25% thought the shepherds used Google Maps to find Jesus. 15% claimed the Three Kings gave Jesus a wand, tiara, and wings as gifts. One child in ten thought Rudolph was present in the stable.
This suggests that religious education may not be as pervasive as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris might imagine.

And the questions posed to them are heavily suggested. I mean, 'played for Chelsea' and the 'wand' answers seem awfully specific. A push poll for children.

My guess is that it was multiple choice and that 5-12yo's (just occasionally) don't take things seriously. Still funny though.

An interesting look at some of the attitudes. It's a group of full-on creationists, basically being driven around the US and talking to - and very much NOT listening to - some scientists. ('Science doesn't know anything' and a great bit of using a dictionary definition of a word to show that science is fake, or something.?)

Total 'fingers in ears' stuff from them at times, and one pretty much goes full Homer Simpson by essentially saying 'Facts are meaningless... You can use them to prove anything that's even remotely true' after talking to the guy who said that Noah's Ark couldn't have happened because no one (else) in recorded history has been able to build a wooden boat of that size.

Also interesting to see the Tea Party lot's attitudes towards atheists, and bringing out the old 'can't have morality' stuff.

I'm only halfway through rewatching it, but for people who are not Young Earthers, it gives an insight into atheist views. 'How can you actually believe that... It makes no sense.'

Another memorable bit, at the Grand Canyon.

'Water doesn't act like that... It's basic physics.'

'Perhaps God changed it for that bit'

I've watched the second half of that documentary now, and it's interesting that a couple of them seem to have had it hit home that there is all this evidence and science that says that the 'Young Earth' idea is simply not viable, and were questioning that particular area of their beliefs, but one of them, one of the lads, went through it all and decided 'No. I didn't really buy that, but now, yeah.... Earth is 6000 years old and Genesis is a literal description of the creation of the universe'.

I'm watching a debate between Dawkins and a Creationist now. The evolution of the eye seems to be a sticking point. The guy can't get his head around it, mainly because he doesn't think that there is enough time for it to have happened (In 6000 years, obviously) but that also has no problem with the entire diversity of life on Earth being able to descend from the 16,000 animals on the Ark.

His 'evidence' against science, however, appears to be batshit insane to me. Which is probably what he thinks about the whole 'eye' thing.

But then he does also say 'how did the ability to go to the toilet evolve. Could we just not do It for millions of years and then grow the right organs' So he might actually be insane.

I find it disgusting that we turn a blind eye and accept groups who chant "British police burn in hell".
