Grimsby play in cleethorpes and Brighton in Fawley. 7-4=3
Grimsby play a couple of hundred yards,if that, outside Grimsby.
Brighton play in Falmer, not Fawley, but they're just outside Brighton and that's the whole general area.
A team playing at that new build in NW London could have one of several names...but not Barnet,in all honesty.

In all honestly a club should call itself whatever it feels most affinity to and if you don't like the name it's tough.

There's no affinity between that new build ground and the area of Barnet...they're miles apart but if you wanna kid yourself that Barnet FC playing all the way over in Canons Park,or wherever it is,is ok,then that's up to you.
I think you know it's a bad fit,deep down.

I live in Clapton and Clapton FC have never at any point in their long history played in Clapton. Their ground is about 5 miles away from Clapton, far further than the Hive is from the Borough of Barnet.

Yeh,I'm aware of the Clapton situation.
I've been past their ground and I've often wondered how the fuck they've ended up playing in Forest Gate and to be honest I'd apply the same ruling to them-they should've changed their name or moved back further west.

Correct, Brighton do play in Falmer. Not Brighton, or Hove.

As for Barnet, which Barnet are you referring to? There are quite a few in that part of North London, some of which aren't particularly close to the old Underhill ground.

Many teams in london are outside the original area. Edgware, Hendon, Hayes, Wealdstone

I think the plan is to do an arsenal and rename Canon's Park tube station. Perhaps West Barnet?

I doubt there's a single site in E5 that could provide for a football stadium! It is a bit odd because when they were formed Clapton was not fully built up although Clapton Orient were based on my road back in the day!

They could maybe ground share with West Ham at the Olympic Stadium. Although they'll have to agree on what new names they are both going to call themselves.

AC Stratford and Stratford International perhaps. West Ham should get first crack as they will be the landlords.

Er,no.
Groundsharing is totally unacceptable in English football.
West Ham,infact, will probably be closer to the West Ham area than the Boleyn is.

Arsenal's bloody miles away from the arsenal to which it derives it's name. Don't see anyone telling them where to play.

Christ even Wimbledon don't play in Wimbledon.

Then you should have lobbying for a while now for them to change their name.
No,even at Upton Park they're close enough to West Ham to get away with keeping the name.
When your arch rivals City, traditionally the biggest club in Cambridge, move to Sawston they should then change their name.
Too far out of town.

Arsenal isn't a place so they could play anywhere.
They did infact drop Woolwich from their name when they left SE London.
Wimbledon are heading back to Wimbledon so no need to change their name.

Arsenal was named after Woolwich Arsenal, that's their pure history.

Barnet are named after a haircut.

Lol was this aimed at me too even though you quoted someone else?!?

They've been playing in Histon and St Ives for last few years and have amassed an average attendance of about a fifth of ours for about 40 years. Bigger club traditionally my arse, well unless you want to go back to about 1950 in which case that tradition and history is hardly relevant. Like Bury winning the cup in 1900 or whatever then claiming their a big club forever more.

The turning point was when you gained League membership in '70.
Until then they were bigger and always had been...with the better history, support, and bigger ground.
Now ofcourse,they're fuck all.

You're right that was the turning point and not many people around now really remember it. We've been bigger than them 45 years and I'd say that's enough time to build up "tradition".

Yeh,you're right.
Apparently the derby game in the late 60's at City pulled in 11,000 plus when both clubs were battling it out at the top of the Southern League.
Bit sad, really, that they just fell away to practically nothing.
Must've been fun in the city in the late 60's with,I'd imagine,a fair amount of rivalry at school, work, etc.

Maybe Everton should change their name to Walton and Manchester United could be Trafford United. Chester should be called Flint
And Nott'm Forest to West.Bridgford.
Seriously though, you have to take each case on it's own merits.
To me,Barnet's new gaff is too far from Barnet to keep that name.

Maybe one day all the fans will look at each other and think it's time for a name change. Until then the name is what it is regardless of what any individual thinks and that is how it should be. At the moment I think a name change would be the last straw for a fair number.

I disagree that is is too far, Friern Barnet is 5 miles from High barnet. Copthall which was the previous plan is 6 miles from Barnet, before that the councils offer of Montrose park is over 6 miles away. The fanbase have had a long time to get used to the fact that a move would be 5-6 miles away. It is also true that a large proportion of Barnet fans dont come High barnet and see Barnet FC as representing the Barnet Administrative area so being the other side of the road isnt seen as a big deal. It is only too far if fans arent prepared to make the journey.

If we ever move out of Cambridge, I'd just like us to drop the "Cambridge" from our name so we become "United Football Club". That would make for interesting mainstream tv commentary if we ever play Man Utd again.

Maybe Barnet could do the same thing - just call yourselves "Football Club" and confuse the entire footballing world.

My school played Netherhall at footy and then a St Ives school the following day.I remember seeing some kids wearing black and amber scarves in the playground and chanting 'United' at us.

We keep hitting brick wall after brick wall with the local councils when it comes to doing anything with our ground. Not that anyone is convinced the board really want to do anything properly. There are covenants on the land around the ground which prevent the sale of alcohol and the local parish and town councils get so jumpy when anyone mentions planning permission to build retail units. NIMBYism at it's best (or worst).

We've submitted 3 or 4 different proposals to the council in the last few years, all blown out of the water. It's never going to happen and we're going to continue with a stadium that isn't fit for purpose.

I wouldn't have thought you lot had much that needed doing at your place.
It's a new build after all.
