I think it's a case of thinking if they stop backing him he'll win loads and they'll miss out.

I'm quite bad with that if I look at a racecard and see a horse I fancy. Feel like I have to back him because I'll kick myself if it wins.

Tbf did it yesterday, stuck ITV4 on for a bit just ahead of a race and tried to punt on Vieux lion rouge but missed it by about 30 seconds on 8/1 and the bastard won.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I've followed horses (and dogs) before, much to my financial and mental detriment. It took a while to get out of it, but I'm cured now.

Thistlecrack out for the season.

Just cancel this year's festival.

Just seen that on the news mate. Bleedin' hell. At least it has stopped me sticking an ante post on...I had seen 15/8 so I thought I'd have a fair punt at that. Money saved there.

Makes it *relatively* wide open at least, although I assume Native River is the favourite.
Will be Murph....noticed yesterday it was 2nd fav @ 5's I believe....don't know what it will come into now. Still odds against I'd presume but I agree with you....wide open now.

I've not followed horse racing for as long as you chaps, but in my few years the only wide open Gold Cup I can remember was 2014 (?) when Lord Windermere won it from On His Own, think both were 20/1 shots. Even that year Silviniaco Conti was a favourite I think.

The year Long Run won it ahead of Kauto Star and Denman was another good one.

Native River is 5/2 currently with Cue Card at 3/1.

the Gold Cup has been good for me since I started watching Cheltenham in 2006 seriously. I've had a few decent wins....War of Attrition, Denman, Imperial Commander, Long Run & the last was Bob's Worth who I had as a single and doubled it up with Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle. Tbh I actually prefer the Champion Hurdle but that's just a personal opinion. Hope you & all the other punters have a good one Murph.

Hope Cue Card can make amends for last years fall, although I was leaning towards Native River over Thistlecrack anyway.

I've not known a build up to Cheltenham to have so many injuries.

Gutted about Thistlecrack as I backed him a long time back at 10/1 and I'm as certain as you can be about a race that hasn't happened that he would have hacked up. Fair play to Paddy Power for refunding my stake as a free bet.

Now I hear that Charli Parcs might be aimed at the Triumph.:ffs:

You were lucky with that one. At least your cash hasn't gone down the pan.

Limini beat Apple's Jade at Punchestown this afternoon, rumoured that he may be in for the Champion Hurdle now.

SHE would have to be supplemented like they did last year with Annie Power. Vroom Vroom Mag is entered but seems to out of favour since her poor run at Doncaster. Mullins says he will probably run both in the mares hurdle, which seems to be a bit of a waste and Rich Ricci horses rarely race each other.

Jockey George Baker is in a stable condition in intensive care in a hospital in St Moritz, Switzerland after a fall in a race on a frozen lake.
Who on earth thought it would be a good idea to have horse races on ice.

never ever heard of that before. I'm sure I've seen reports about some very long race over terrible terrain in Yugoslavia or some place that way but never on ice.

Who needs Cheltenham?! so close to bagging £2k with all 4 on that lucky 15, but I'll take the profit

How impressive was American? Left the rest of the field for dead without even getting going.

Very good mate. Antepost for 2018 Cheltenham? :sur:

Only just seen this post, which reminded me of 1990, when Norton's Coin won the Gold Cup at 100/1. He was trained by a dairy farmer IIRC

I think a 28 day ban is rather harsh.
It was the jockey that won's first ever winner, probably won't get a stranger one in their whole career.

Poor guy's only had 12 rides in the past 3 years, so it's not going to affect his livelihood, but when you haven't ridden a winner for 3 years, that's a painful mistake to make.

Not a clue. The last Lincoln winner I backed was in 1990. I just looked at the result on the Racing Post website - the 1990 Lincoln winner got £47K prize money, while this year's winner only gets £62K. That seems a crap prize to me - an online inflation cal shows £47K in 1990 is equivalent to £98K in 2016.

You read a lot about diminishing prize money in horse racing, and that makes you wonder how connections make any money. I know that probably 98% of them don't, but still.

Edit - google shows that in 2010 (the last time the ROA did a survey), it cost an average of £20K per year to have a flat horse in training!
