Would probably ring true if Liverpool actually played a striker ahead of Origi, but given that they don't it's a weak argument.

His argument is also hampered by the fact that Lukaku is, you know, a better player.

Isn't Origi one of those Belgian's who was highly-rated and therefore signed just because Belgium were supposed to be a new force in world football and signing one was deemed all the rage?

Origi was never really highly rated, he was signed as a prospect which is what he remains and at 21 still has plenty of time though I doubt he'll see it through at Liverpool.

He was rated pretty highly after his WC performance. Kept Lukaku on bench if I remember correctly.

I rate Origi, a very good squad player at Liverpool's level, but obviously not in the same ballpark as Lukaku.

Lukaku was miserable in the World Cup, he put himself on the bench. With Origi, you know you'll get an industrious performance at the very least, whilst Lukaku provided very little when he wasn't scoring at that stage in his career. His work off the ball, link up play, ability to hold the ball up, dribbling and finishing have all improved a tonne since the World Cup. Lukaku is a far better player now than he was at WC14. Origi can be more consistent in an inferior way.

I never got the argument that he doesn't show up in big games. Everton as a collective never show up in big games - until he's at a better club in which his team can compete with top opposition, it is very simply for a superior side to crowd him out. He's never played for a team that should be competing in these games. Liverpool knew all they had to do was cut out Barkley (which they did with ease) and they would cut the entire supply off to Lukaku. Much better teams are able to mark even the best opposition players out of games.

I have proven he scores against better teams than Liverpool.....but Salty and the other DFS reds believe everything they hear on TV.

Your right though cut his supply and its job done.

He can't cope when people mark him and his assister's. The better strikers will make something happen though, Aguero will come deeper to get involved, Kane will move around trying to get space and link up with the midfield, and Costa will get up to all sorts of tricks to get more in the game. Lukakwho gives up and becomes more akin to Balotelli when things aren't going well and he needs to develop more which is why the big sides aren't exactly banging the door down trying to get him off you.

I'd quite like a couple more players in the squad who show up more regularly for the non-big games tbh.

Except the point of having a good striker is that he sometimes wins you games you shouldn't win, against better opposition. Lukaku almost never does, and nowhere near regularly enough for being so highly coveted by some.

While being the main man, it's not like United or Liverpool put four men on him just because the rest of his team isn't up to scratch. Of course he feeds from scraps, but so do all quality strikers away to Barcelona/Bayern/Real, but the best ones get goals regularly anyway. Having your main supply cut off isn't exactly an original strategy to mark out a striker.

I think what people are getting at with Lukaku is that by now, you know exactly what you get -- a good premier league striker. But whether you're Everton away at Liverpool or say Chelsea away at Barcelona, you just don't want him up front. An odd goal here and there won't change the fact that he's not only not scoring, but genuinely invisible every time his team is sitting back. The forgettable games should be the exception, not the rule, even if he can't bag a hattrick every big game with the gang of gin he has behind him.

Another claim I hear about Lukaku is that he does not perform against the big teams, and it is true that most of his goals this season have come against lesser sides.

But that is true for most Premier League strikers, and there is a logical reason why.

When Everton play the top teams they do not have as much possession or create as many chances, and Lukaku is up against better defenders too.

He scored against Tottenham last month, but he is not going to go White Hart Lane and cause Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld as many problems as he does when he faces Sunderland's defence at the Stadium of Light, playing two centre-halves who are low on confidence and with Everton seeing loads of the ball.

The time when questions come is when you are a striker playing in a top team and you are not scoring against the other top teams.

But it is hard to judge Lukaku like that because he has not played against many big teams while being on an equal footing.

That is the opportunity a move to, say, Chelsea would provide him with - the step-up to play for a team that is going to give you more chances in every game, whoever the opposition.

There is nothing wrong with having that ambition. In fact, it is completely normal.

Pretty much my thoughts on Lukaku. Yes, he has gone missing in big games, but we don't really know what he'll be like if he gets a chance to play for Chelsea vs Barcelona/Real Madrid/Bayern Munich. I don't think we can judge him until that point. I also don't think the gulf between Chelsea and those top teams is similar to the gulf between Everton and the top sides in the Premier League, despite their performance against United, who were horrible in mid-week. Lukaku's general play was good in mid-week, he scorched the United defence a few times but admittedly made a few horrible decisions also.

Another impressive statistic is that not a single one of his goals have come from the penalty spot.

Very quiet yesterday because Liverpool won eh. Who you going to get when he moves at the end of the season. You'll be stuck back in the mire when he does go.
