Just about to change my car after years with a company motor. I bought a stop gap (2010 pug 407sw) but now want something better but haven't really got a clue about buying cars.
The Mrs wants an SUV and we don't really need a big car anymore as my eldest is starting lessons himself soon.
Thinking about the following:
Kia Sportage
Ford Kuga
Kia Optima sport
Vauxhall Mokka X
Hyundai Tucson
Suzuki Vitara

Has anyone got an opinions or advice? Looking at something around a year old / £15-17K.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I would say one of the main things is to check if it has a tape player or not. If it does then DON'T get that one because it is probably an old car. Otherwise they are all quite similar so it doesn't really matter.

Of those you've listed I'd say the Hyundai is the one. Their cars have become incredibly reliable over the last decade/15 years.

They give you some serious toys too. It's the highest spec by some way but I worry about the resale value in a few years. A mate's got the ix35 and absolutely loves it.

Bloody cars. Had mine in at the garage today, as I've had brake binding issues, and now there's a burning smell coming from the passenger frontside, and that side has had a caliper replaced recently. Anyway, one of the mechanics took the car out for a drive twice today, put the car up on the ramp; and nothing, everthing is working fine. Yet I bet when I drive it this week I'll smell it and the car will feel as if it has one of the brakes binding!!

Bought a Nissan Qashqai last year. It's a smashing little motor. As it's just over a year old now I can't really say what it will be like reliability wise in the long term, but right now I'm really happy with it.

Before that, I had the Renault Clio that my dad bought me for my 18th birthday. I loved that car and was really sad to let her go. I don't care what anybody says about Renaults, that one was brilliant.

Out of those listed we preferred them in this order:

Ford Kuga
Vauxhall Mokka X
Kia Sportage

We ended up getting a Peugeot 3008 though. 8000 miles on it for around £7k with 2 years warranty and 3 years write off insurance. The Kia's 7 year warranty is pretty tempting if buying a new car though.

Seeing as Dave is wrong about everything he has ever given advice on/predicted, I'd say do the opposite of what Dave suggests.

Probably too big for you, but there are some cracking deals on Mondeo Estates. I'm looking at the moment and the Ford dealer in Weston-s-Mare has sent me some good figures.

If its a VAG car (VW, Skoda, Audi et al), then it will be the brake pistons on the calliper sticking. Take apart and clear out all the rust, by pulling the rubber seals back. Lube it with brake fluid, test and refit.

On these its best practice to take apart and do this once a year and not all garages do a proper job. They do rust up quick and is a common issue

Replaced three calipers in the last few years. It's a Beemer that is getting on a bit now and the garage boss said it could be a piston issue or the flexie. He said if it happens when I'm driving around just pop it in and see if they can get to the bottom of it. It could very well be what your suggesting too.

Why not Honda or Toyota? They are probably the most reliable cars. I prefer Toyota personally. Hyundai has been on the up recently too.

Slightly dearer GD. Maybe I should have a closer look for any deals though.
