My hope is that in future Christmases will stop being one big commercial fucking venture rammed down our throats and causing untold stress***. It's a horrible time for people who are lonely because it exacerbates their loneliness and it's a horrible time for people with mental health problems because it exaerbates their problems. On top of that thousands of people get so swept up in the madness of it all that they come out the other end of it up to their eyes in debt.

In terms of a prediction for the future I only see the above getting worse.

I've got a Christmas coping strategy which improves every year. It involves avoiding all TV, shopping for presents online and adopting a countenance that says I hate Christmas, so fuck off you rubbish bastard.

I dearly wish we could stop the inexorable march of the Christmas period further and further into November or even October at this rate. For example Smat starting of forum threads about Christmas, when it's still November!

Let's nip this whole 'massive nationwide chain Christmas advert' fad in the bud as well. Big companies producing long glossy TV ads costing millions attempting to make us all feel warm and cozy inside. Fuck off. We've had OMG JOHN LEWIS IT'S SO CUTE thing the last couple years, see all the hype that's gotten. Now we've seen the likes of Tesco and Sainsburys jumping on that bandwagon on their own version. It's a marketing campaign FFS.

In 100 years? It'll be about buying upgrades for your mother-in-law's helper robot, assuming they haven't turned around and enslaved us all by then. And your kids will want the latest Salford City shirt, following their latest Sepp Blatter commemorative Champions Super League Title win.

Socks, a tree in your main room, seeing your family, decent crowds at the football, food comas, new whisky, pretty lights, downtime, coming up with good presents, receiving good presents, giving the dog a bone, the cats off their faces on catnip, making sure I don't think of politics for 24 straight hours, Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses, going up to the Lakes on the solstice, shiny new things, letting yourself enjoy tacky stuff and pastimes that you otherwise would run from, meeting all the neighbours and it not feeling forced, plenty to do indoors, seasonal food, greeting strangers.
