Splashing the cash already are we

Possibly, but it's also 3 days before the season starts, and I'd question whether there are many players out there who've had multiple offers but have waited for a club that looked distinctly like it might be liquidated 7 days ago.

It must sting just a little bit that we’re now a division lower and players would still rather come to us than you.

Yeah one thing that really gets us down is our jealously to the worlds second oldest non-league club Notts County.

I understand Turner turning us down because game time was likely to be limited but this is a weird one, either way it’s a good signing in my book.

certainly fits the head it kick it bill that we desperately need. Just another two center backs required!

One thing I’ll give Ardley is that he does seem well respected and popular with players. Couldn’t be more different to Harry Kewell

I'm pretty sure Cray Wanderers are older than us too. Might be some others as well.

This is where that extra £500k from the FL comes in rather handy.

They spent that on transfer fees last summer, one thing Notts County are good at is burning through huge amounts of money.

Jacob, so it’s the 3rd oldest non-league team?

Yeah, there’s a couple of others as well (Hallam and Worksop Town) who kind of are - they were initially formed before us but have since reformed.

We had at least 5 full time CBs on the books last season, along with at least 2 loans at any one time. Some of those (Duffy, Brisley, Elliott Ward) would have been on decent money too. We currently only have two (young but talented Pierce Bird and Ben Turner), who I imagine will be complimented with loans or cheaper back up options. Plus we got rid of another big earner in Dan Jones. So our defensive net spend will still be loads less than last season, even if Turner is on a couple of grand a week.

Turner is better than anything you had last season.

Sutton have signed Rob Milsom who we’ve had the last few seasons. Injury prone, but should be a good player at this level, can do a solid job in the league either in midfield or at left back.

First of what is likely to be a few signings today at Notts - left back Zoumana Bakayogo. Was at Tranmere last season.

Our pre-season transfer business has been going on for less than a day and already makes more sense last year.

Another one - goalkeeper Sam Slocombe. Ex Scunthorpe, Blackpool and Bristol Rovers.

Good keeper Slocombe is from what I can remember.

Good to see Notts up and running now with their signings... it’s going to be a tough league to get out of this year (as it is every year tbf!!!)

Slocombe is another fantastic signing, he's too good to be in non-league. I have him down as a top end L2 keeper or even bottom end of L1 at a stretch.

New owners certainly not messing about.

It's a good signing for Notts County in NL, but top end L2 keeper?! How can you say that when we sent him on loan to you but he didn't play a single game for you?

He's a good L2 keeper, he's no where near good enough for L1. He's too slow getting down, he definitely caused us to drop points in L1, without a doubt.

He also slept with Chris Lines' wife, hence he was shipped out on loan & kept no where near the first team. I had no problem with Slocombe before that (apart from not being a L1 keeper but that's not his fault so to speak), but the guy is obviously a pr*ck. Who does that to your own team mate?

Have to agree with Gassy on this one.

In his limited playing time here, albeit in cups behind a weakened defence, Slocombe looked really shaky. Maybe he needed a run of games to get up to speed but he certainly didn't strike me as a top L2 'keeper despite arriving with decent reviews. He was parrying shots all over the place and looked devoid of any confidence whatsoever.

The three others we used last season - Vickers, Smith and Gilks - were all far better IMO.

No surprise he's ended up back round these parts. He moved back to Scunthorpe at the beginning of the year.

You’re right. There’s some lines you just don’t cross. Mrs Lines being one of them.

As long as he has functioning hands, it’s a step up on poor Ross Fitzsimons.

My initial thought was that these signings look decent. But Players over the age of 30 who have no non league experience are a bit of a risk.

Because I cover Blackpool and I watched him play 46 times during he 2016/17 season when they got promoted from L2.

Damien McCrory and Dion Kelly-Evans signed, both been on trial and looked decent. More for depth in defence these I think.

Impressive, considering he played 34 league games?

Either way, that goalkeeper he was then, he isn't now IMO. A string of 1st team regular football in NL will get him going again though Im sure

Aldershot have signed Shamir Mullings. I was annoyed with signing Quigley but I think they’ve trumped us with Mullings and Harry Pan as a strike force.

Bit petty. Do cup games not count?

And to continue the pettiness it was 37 league games, not 34, as Blackpool came through the play-offs.

Has Mullings actually managed to score a league goal at this level or above yet?
