The thing is called "Champions League" but if a small club finish as their league champion then the champion is not in. How contraditory.

I don't think there's a point in monopolizing CL among the richest and spot clubs and simply let the ones with merit (who finish their leagues in the higher positions) out.

And that would be clearly worst in every term if not to Champions League to the national leagues so I see this hardly happening.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
At least having to make the top four has some level of sporting achievement.

If you make it 'only the famousest cos we say so' and you might as well just have a balance sheet comparing competition.

To be fair to the elite clubs, they're clearly worried about playing in front of empty seats at places like The Etihad and nobody bothering to watch on TV.

Many options are available... a few examples:

1. Reserving Champions League to Top 20 Major Leagues/ Top Countries. Not all Leagues are at the same level. So not all league champions should be on Champions League. Only 48 clubs, 32 QF, winners advancing to group stage with 16 direct entries. Maximum 14 games.

2. All in...
Four Regional Conferences (North, South, West and East), with 64 clubs per conference.
Knock-out Competition. 4 Conference Playoffs (R64 and R32), Two Interconference (N vs S, E vs W, N vs W, E vs S, etc. Rotating each year) Playoffs (R32 and R16).
After Interconference Playoffs competition break-up:
- 16 winners of Interconference Playoff advances to Champions League.
- 16 loosers of Interconference Playoffs advances to Europa League.

Maximum number of games per club: 15 games (only Winner and Runner-up).
256 Clubs starting at the same point in european competitions.

Random (only to make one exemple) berth allocation... Between 1 and 10 berths per association, depending on Country Ranking and Domestic League Classification (A, B, C or D. Depending on attendance, competitiviness, population etc.).

West Conference (64): Northern Ireland (2), Ireland (4), Wales (4), Scotland (6), England (10), France (10), Spain (10), Portugal (8), Gibraltar (1), Andorra (1) and Russia *(8).
East Conference (64): Kazakhstan (4), Georgia (4), Armenia (3), Azerbaijan (4), Ukraine (7), Moldova (3), Romania (6), Hungary (4), Czech Republic (5), Slovakia (4), Poland (5), Belarus (4), Latvia (3), Estonia (3) and Lithuania (3).
South Conference (64): Italy (10), Malta (1), San Marino (1), Slovenia (3), Croatia (3), Bosnia (3), Montenegro (3), Serbia (3), Macedonia (3), Albânia (3), Greece (6), Bulgaria (5), Turkey (6), Cyprus (3) and Israel (3).
North Conference (64): Switzerland (5), Liechenstein (1), Germany (10), Luxembourg (2), Belgium (7), Netherlands (8), Austria (5), Denmark (5), Norway (5), Sweden (6), Finland (4), Iceland (1) and Faroe Islands (2).

That doesn't express my opinion, only a few other options...

However each one is better than the option in that article...

England, Spain, Germany, Italy with 10 clubs each in Europe should be enough to attend all the greed from top clubs. This means half or more the Premier Division in this countries will entry in Europe. (2 of 4 welsh berths are from welsh clubs playing in english competitions.)

However in the other hand, all clubs must entry at the same time in Europe. Giving higher profile games to clubs from lower ranked countries.

Only in the first round you will have restrictions: clubs from the same association can't meet in the first round, and also clubs will be divided according to their ranking (Pot 1 vs Pot 3 and Pot 2 vs Pot 4).

Without group stage, interest should be higher in all rounds.

Also because top clubs will entry in all rounds.

However this model tends to generate a stronger group in the last rounds.

No early division between Europa League and Champions League will make things more interesting. Giving all clubs the chance to qualify to CL or EL.
Only European Top 32 Clubs from 256 clubs will have their chance in one of this competitions, depending on if they win or not the last round of 32.

Have you had a look at the Flat Earth thread?

It's looking likely now that clubs who finish in the final CL spots from the top four European leagues will automatically qualify for the group stages, with the rule change coming into effect in two seasons.

Italy not France I believe. They have been particularly vocal about it since a few of their sides have failed to qualify.

The first 3 Leagues in the UEFA Rankings (Spain, Germany, England) have 3 guaranteed starters plus 1 who has to qualify in the Playoff Finals
The Leagues 4-6 (Italy, Portugal, France) have 2 guaranteed starters plus 1 who has to qualify in the Playoff Finals.

I don't like this "new rule" tbh. (OK, I don't like the whole concept at all. I prefer the old European Cup rules with K.O matches right from the beginning and not the Group stages. But you have to bend over for the ever growing desire of getting more (guaranteed) money ;) )

In what way is Serie A better than Ligue 1 these days? We both a mammoth club that wins the league very year and a couple of others one that do ok. Italy have done next to nothing in the past few seasons in Europe to warrant that they are better than us. The two Milans are both crap and Napoli and Roma could get beat by Lyon anyday. Basing such an important decision on UEFA coefficient is simply senseless.

Here is the actual UEFA Ranking List with it's 5 years evaluation

http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/

Italy on 4th with an actual Coefficient of approx. 60.9 is way ahead of France on #5 with approx. 44.4. And you can see that Italy has gained in every of the last 4 years (seasons 12/13 - 15/16) a better coefficient than France.

And you can see that actually Portugal lost a place and Russia gained one. Very narrow here at the places 5-7
