Lee: Yeah, the producers know it, too. Hence why they're patching it! One thing I didn't even realise during that chapter was:
Aldercapt was the monster stalking you during the whole chapter, some players have heard him speak when fighting him but I got nothing. The fact that such a major player (supposedly) gets done away with so easily is shocking.

Oaf: Oh, you think the bear trap quest is bad? Wait until the valve quest in Lestallum. Even worse! They should've opted for quality over quantity, here. Stick with the hunts, though. They get more challenging/interesting later on.

Kev: Dino may be a douche but he, along with virtually every other side character, gets no exposition towards the main storyline. And even then, he STILL gets more screen time than Lunafreya in total, and she's supposed to be the oracle FFS!

I'm on chapter 14 and just prepping for the final battle. I've had to google most of the storyline to be honest as it's completely lost me. In principle, it's quite an intriguing premise. I just can't believe they've executed telling it so badly.

I didn't realise the monster was Aldercapt either. I'm not sure how I was meant to realise either. Even the whole Ardyn is immortal thing wasn't explained very well. A real shame because all 4 characters are really likeable but there's little in the story to get behind. Even Lunafreya's death was meh. She'd been on screen for 5minutes and I wa supposed to feel sad apparently.

I've finished everything this game has to offer now. Well, apart from the final Sania quest but I can't be arsed to find her frogs. This ranks as one of the easiest 1FF games for extra challenging content. Having said that, the Pitioss Dungeon and a couple of the sealed dungeon doors (especially the last one which is 60 floors of high-level monsters and you can't use items - your only grace is that you get a campsite on every tenth floor) are challenging. I would strongly suggest doing the post-game content to get the most out of the game. It's definitely worth it.

As for the story, after some reading, I've decided to give a summary of the plot in the spoiler below. I'm not 100% convinced I'm right but here goes:

A long time ago:

- The world and its people are forged by the six Astrals: Ramuh, Titan, Shiva, Leviathan, Bahamut and Ifrit. However, Ifrit, being the wanker he is, decides to go against the other five due to his lack of like for humans. He is therefore cast aside by the other five and as a retort, creates the starscourge to bring daemons to Eos.

- As a means of protecting their world, the other five Astrals grant the Kings of Lucis a crystal which bears the power to do away with the daemons. Shiva takes on the form of Gentiana and the ring of the Lucii is forged to contain the power of kings.

- Ardyn Lucis Caelum spends much of his time healing people from the starscourge by absorbing the daemons into himself. When it is time for him to become king himself, he is poltically usurped by another because of the darkness in his heart. The Astrals also reject him and don't allow him to die in peace, so, with his newfound powers of immortality gained from absorbing so much darkness, Ardyn becomes bitter and corrupted and vows vengeance against the Lucis line of blood and the Astrals.

- With Ardyn wanting vengeance and Ifrit continuing to be a total wanker, the other Astrals decide to pick one of the Lucian kings to take up the mantle of their "champion" so to speak and rid the world of Ardyn for good.

When Noctis is a kid:

- During a royal visit to Tenebrae, the place is attacked by the Niflheim Empire under the orders of Emperor Aldecapt, although in reality he is having his strings pulled by Ardyn who has waited many years for an opportunity to rid the world of the crystal currently held in Lucis and has become chancellor of the Niflheim empire.

- Noctis is placed in a coma during the attack and it's there where the visions of the five Astrals come to him and declare him as the "chosen one" who will bring an end to Ardyn, although to do so he must kill Ardyn in the afterlife and thus sacrifice himself to do so. Gentiana remains with Lunafreya and (presumably) tells her what Noctis' true purpose is. King Regis also discovers the truth and he and Luna agree to keep his burden a secret to him until he's ready.

Events prior to the game:

- Insomnia is visited by Ardyn who delivers false peace terms to king Regis, one of which is for Noctis and Luna to wed in Altissia (so Ardyn can get them both in the same place) - Regis accepts though before the treaty day arrives, he sends Noctis and his three friends away on the pretence that he is off to marry Luna, although in reality it is for him to gain power to fulfil his royal duty, even if it means his own son has to die for the sake of Eos.

- Insomnia is then invaded and the crystal stolen by Niflheim. The ring of the Lucii holds the means to summon old kings of Lucis past to aid in the afterlife fight, although it also grants the wearer extreme power. Ravus, Luna's brother, loses his arm when he wears it not being of royal blood whilst Nyx sacrifices himself by using it to fight the Niflheim forces. Luna escapes with the ring and makes her way to Altissia.

The game:

- Noctis ends up meeting with Cor, one of the last survivors of the attack on Insomnia. He convinces him to find the weapons of his ancestors in the tombs scattered across the land so he can gain the power to get revenge on those responsible for killing his father, unaware that he has a far greater purpose.

- After Noctis is contacted by Luna, he is told he must also get the power of the Astrals to bring down Niflheim. Ardyn assists them in getting to the site where Titan lies, as he is more than happy to see those who rejected him get beaten whilst fulfilling his ultimate goal of leading Noctis to the crystal.

- Noctis gains more weapons and Ramuh's power before going to meet Luna in Altissia. There, he agrees to help her summon Leviathan, who trials him to see if he's worthy of her power. Whilst the battle rages on, Ignis suffers a serious injury and is blinded whilst Ardyn fatally stabs Luna to rile Noctis even more.

- The events of Altissia turn Noctis into a mopey sod, something which really annoys Gladiolus. Eventually, the group reconcile and head on a train to Tenebrae to honour Luna's memory. However, on the way, Noctis confronts Ardyn and is tricked into pushing Prompto off the top of the train. He is then captured by Ardyn and is used as bait to get Noctis to come to the crystal but not before Noctis obtains Shiva's power, despite everyone thinking she was dead.

- When in Gralea, Noctis is alone and forced through the hell that is chapter 13 with only his ring as his initial weapon. He is reunited with Ignis and Gladiolus and they take down a corrupted Ravus and a monsterous Aldecapt as it's revealed that the empire had been performing experiments on people to turn them into daemons to populate Ardyn's "new world" - Prompto was one of these experiments.

- The group rescues Prompto and Noctis makes his way to the crystal. When he gets there, the crystal absorbs him as Ardyn explains to him his true legacy and motivations for wanting the Lucis Caelum bloodline destroyed. Once inside the crystal, Bahamut explains Noctis' true purpose to him and it takes ten years for Noctis to absorb the crystal's light before he returns to the world now plunged into darkness by Ardyn.

- Noctis regroups with the others at Hammerhead and explains to them during one last camp that he has to sacrifice himself to kill Ardyn for good and restore light to the world. With that, the group head back to Insomnia where Ardyn summons Ifrit to antagonise them one last time. Ifrit is eventually defeated with Bahamut and Shiva's assistance and the group makes their way to the throne, where Ardyn takes Ignis, Gladio and Prompto out so he can fight Noctis one-on-one.

- Noctis defeats Ardyn and his soul goes to the afterlife, ready to return. Knowing this, Noctis used the ring of the Lucii to summon the Lucian kings to kill him and join him in the afterlife where they, along with Ignis, Prompto and Gladio (presumably killed by the daemons they were fending off when Lucis returned to the throne) defeat Ardyn's dark form and rid him of life altogether.

- Everyone, including Noctis is then absorbed into the light and the sun rises in Eos, proving that the eternal darkness has gone. In what is presumably a dream (or maybe afterlife) sequence, Noctis is seen sat on the throne with Luna.

Phew! There are still plenty of plot holes in that, too!

I just fought Leviathan. EEEEEH. Looked epic as fuck, but wasn't actually the slightest part of a challenge and went on for far too long considering that fact. Got bored of holding down O waiting for it to end...

THIS BEING SAID.

I love this game so much

Yeah that fight is certainly an anti-climax. There is a far better one later on, though.

Ok, I'm now half way through that dreaded chapter 13 and I see why it gets all of the hate thrown its way. Guh. To think, somebody actually sat down and designed that part, thinking that it would add to the game. Endless bland corridors which keep sending you back and forth, the great battle system is replaced with (basically) just holding down square (because there's never actually a chance to use the other things) and absolutely shit stealth that I admit I didn't even try to participate in. And the worst part, it just seems to keep going on and on. I want my Final Fantasy XV back...

Earliest you can get one is a sidequest where you have to feed the cat at Cape Caem with either a really difficult fish to catch or some really expensive cat food that can be bought at the nearby shop.

Finished the story. Very disappointed in it. A real shame as I really enjoyed the world and characters. If the story was up to par, the game would comfortably be a 9/10. As it is, the story is about a 4 which drags the game down. I'm going to take a break from it and resume after game content probably later this year.

I just finished the game as well and I'd say you're spot on there. About the only thing that let the game down at all was the overall story (and chapter 13, of course... *shudder*), everything else was pretty great. I loved the group of 4 characters and the relationship between them, plus the world and I actually thought that some of the parts of the story... but the over arching thing was just a bit naff.

Still, that becomes only the 4th 1FF game I ever actually finished. And of those four, it's comfortably ahead of FF13 (which I didn't actually mind that much... I know, shoot me) but still not up to 1FF X and VII standard. Very glad that Dons persistent bumming of this game in this thread resulted in me buying it. In fact, all of you constantly banging on about how good it was were a factor. You guys... are the best.

Oaf and Lee, I should mention that that I clocked 60 hours when finishing the game but it took me another 40 to do all the post-game content, and it was worth it, too. Make sure you get round to doing that stuff as that's where the game's true challenge lies.

You know, I'm pretty sure that I've never actually touched any post game stuff in my life on any game. Once I finish the story of these sorts of games, I don't think I've ever gone back to them. Even on things like MGS V, Elder Scrolls and Fallout, which I love and still have plenty of things left to do in them. I don't know why. And in the same way, even though I know it's meant to be good, I don't really feel the urge to get myself back on 1FF XV anymore. Still, later down the line I may fancy it and actually give it a shot...

If it was a joke, it wasn't funny :dis:

By the way, I forgot to mention the worst thing about that whole part... those fucking DOORS. Oh my shit.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Wait.

Wait.

Door slides up a bit.

Wait.

Wait.

Door goes up all the way.

Takes about 3 or 4 seconds per door. If it was a one off, I probably wouldn't have noticed it. If it happened 20 times, it may have been a bit of a nuisance. But ENDLESS DOORS. And holy shit. It really fucked me off.

Yeah, those doors only open once you've finished the main quest.

As for fishing... you know, that's a part of FFXV I just couldn't be fucked with in the slightest. Fishing is usually shit in games... I tend to ignore it on everything it's ever been on, unless it's Pokemon and I'm after something specific that can only be caught by fishing.

Is there any story/character stuff post-game? And I haven't tried to do any of the post-game stuff yet, but how am I meant to do side-quests if all the villages and towns are abandoned?

This was a very underwhelming effort, though. Final Fantasy: Ubisoft. A shame, because I liked Ardyn as a villain and certainly tolerated Noctis as a protagonist better than Cloud, Squall or Tidus, but the story isn't so much neglected as almost completely absent. This is a fucking Final Fantasy game, ffs, why else do people play these games?

Edit: I think the reason I like Ardyn is because he looks like what a character from a potential Final Fantasy IX remake. Dat Hair Doe.

Yeah, I felt like the soundtrack was very under rated too. People will obviously always compare it to what came before (which is made even easier with the cars awesome sound track...) but it's still very good.
