People seem very keen on allowing them in and there's certainly a million out there. How many would you propose to take?

After that infant's body was washed up on a Turkish beach, David Cameron pledged for the UK to accept 20,000 by 2020 (so nowhere fucking near a million, and we're not on target to meet even that). Am I right in assuming you think that's 20,000 too many?

Just for some perspective, the UK took in more than 200,000 asylum seekers in a three-year period after the break up of the former Yugoslavia so even if the UK does eventually take in 20,000 Syrian refugees it's still pretty small beer. So far as unaccompanied children are concerned there are estimated to be 90,000 sleeping rough or in camps across the continent. The UK intake? About 700 under the Dublin Regulation, allowing unaccompanied minors to come to the UK if they already have immediate family here. Around 350 under the Dubs amendment (significantly fewer than the 3,000 that campaigners and Labour Peer, Lord Dubbs, who came to the UK as a child refugee fleeing Nazi persecution, had hoped would be admitted).

Despite the small volume of arrivals, despite these people being among the most vulnerable in the world, despite the UK government's response appearing quite inadequate given the scale of an unfolding humanitarian crisis, the tabloid press have kept up a relentless line of attack on migrants/refugees (there obviously is a distinction, but it doesn't exist in tabloidland). The "evidence" they presented in the case of child refugees is not evidence at all, for there's no way of accurately verifying how old an individual might be based upon a photo (16-17 year old adolescents do, believe it or not, often look like young adults. If they've endured some particularly harrowing experiences you might reasonably expect them to look older than their years). It's gutter journalism, playing to people's prejudices and designed to fuel hostility. The message is clear: these people are trying to game the system, they're not deserving of your sympathy or your compassion. Respond in such a way and we'll denounce you as some privileged luvvie, try to engineer your sacking and pore over your tax returns in an attempt to discredit you. Fuck that and fuck them.
