Although they've been expelled for not meeting EFL criteria, if they sort themselves out, could it not be the case that they meet the National League criteria and start next season in the National League North?

It all depends whether they hope to save the current club or just go the phoenix route

If someone takes over the club & clears all the debt id imagine the National League might take them. If they decide to go the phoenix route they would surely start at North West Counties level or at a push maybe Northern League North West.

If the current club gets bought and sorted out financially they should go straight into the NL North.

I'd argue that for a buyer this actually makes far more sense than desperately trying to get the club back into L1 now. They'd still need to spend a significant chunk to stay up in L2 next season. In NL North they can tighten their belts while still having probably the highest budget in the division and still maintaining decent attendances at Gigg Lane, as the fans will surely just feel incredibly lucky that their club still exists. The net impact in terms of the the club's league position will be pretty minimal over the course of 2-3 years.

An ideal scenario but won’t happen.

We have a CVA agreement that without any football cannot be met. We have an owner who refuses to put any money in (in fact he claims he is owed £7M in the CVA)... as soon as we fail a CVA agreement we will be liquidated at the courts, so that won’t be long.

Without football the club folds. Most of our fans are now turning their attention on protecting Gigg Lane and starting again.

Saw on Twitter that they're going to the NW counties league.

Wouldn't that make it an odd number, though?

As above, the Northern Counties is probably the highest they'll be allowed in.

Wouldn't be an odd number as they'd still be demoting one fewer from each of the divisions above.
Looks like they'll be much further down the pyramid anyway.

Are their players all up for grabs then? Don't know who they technically had left aside from Neil Danns, who I imagine would be more than good enough for this level.

Their contracts are probably considered void now. They have seven left:

EFL relegation places wouldn't impact NL ones, though? They'd just relegate less in the EFL and keep the NL and below the same? I don't think it'd go through the whole pyramid.

But surely if only 1 goes down from League Two and 2 go up from the Conference, they would need to adjust the relegation places in the NL to avoid it being left with 23 teams.

Exactly - that's what happened whenever a team dropped through the leagues in the past. The adjustment goes right down to wherever the team now find themselves.

I thought that further down there were leagues with an odd number in already, that was my thinking.

A 3 division drop would be about right and consistent with precedent.

Bury have to start again, however the Conference should be forced to accept them. They need to go lower (Evostik Premier?) and get their act together.

Then once they get to the National League they'll get caught in the bottleneck and realise that them continually voting for only 2 down/2 up is actually going to hurt them

The EFL won't reverse the decision because they know exactly what precedent that would set going forward (and because there would then be zero incentive for owners to manage clubs properly if they knew there would be no real consequences). The sooner people accept that fact and try to move on, the better.

Exactly and now we see Bolton taking out a 40m loan to pay off in 3 years or something daft, then signing a new team on top of that.
