Both Shrewsbury and Town announcing this evening that we’ve been given permission to talk to Hurst.

Although there has been many linked with the job and the whole scenario where Ross had had more than one interview before then going to Sunderland, I think Hurst was always number 1 choice and Ross wasn’t actually offered the job rather than him turning us down.

That’s a bit harsh. The last lot have been ‘has beens’ and had been given plenty of time. Better to come here than say Leeds (although that is the other end of the spectrum!)

Ironically Grimsby fans were always crying for him to be sacked and despite that he got them back into the EFL. Grimsby have struggled since he left. Shrewsbury have got to the L1 play-off final with a team that included a lot of former non-league players. Good luck at Ipswich.

Poisened chalice of a job and he probably isn't ready to step up to that level. Struggled terribly with about 1000 or so Grimsby fans on his back and then rode the wildest crest of a honeymoon period for a over a year and a half at Shrewsbury. Will be intriguing to see if he can cope with pressure again and in increased fan volumes. If he was going to move then Barnsley was the ideal assignment for me. Hope Ipswich fans are looking forward to seeing Alex Rodman and Lennell John-Lewis in the Championship.

"always crying for him to be sacked"

Such a sensationalist spin on it. If you actually read what the Grimsby fans on here wrote at the time you'd know PH was far from blameless in what was a rather dysfunctional relationship between manager and fans.

But even ignoring all that which happened during our non-league time, we have struggled since for a variety of reasons. PH fucking up the negotiations for the contracts of some of our best players and PH signing a central midfield duo that had just been relegated down to the Conference to use in L2, being two major ones.

So please refrain from waltzing into the other forums and slagging off the Grimsby fans unless you have something more concrete to support your bullshit.

Agree with most of what SoC has said, though I think he’s being slightly harsh about Hurst’s achievements. It’s no coincidence that he’s got every club he’s been at (Ilkeston, Boston, Grimsby, Shrewsbury) into the playoffs. He builds from the back and makes teams hard to beat. 3 points is a bonus most weeks. He gets the players playing for him and always builds an excellent team spirit. Hates an egos and star players so they’ll be benched or straight out the door unless they do what he says. On saying that, it usually makes for a stronger team.

On the flip side, he will always settle for the playoffs rather than stretch for the title (not sure that’s a problem for Ipswich). Has his favourites. Gives the players credit when they win but also shoved the blame onto them when they lose. The football is solid but uninspiring.

Think he’ll do alright but I think he’s approaching his ceiling.

I didn't mention his achievements, but other than that I agree with all you've said there. Maybe I came off a bit negatively, initially.

I do wonder what he will do with a bit more of a budget, and where he will be sourcing his players from though. If Ipswich can support him well there, then it could be a better move for all. He's climbed the leagues rapidly and that is always a bit of a red flag for me, but I do like him so wish him all the best. I just wouldn't be betting my savings on him getting that close to taking them back up to the PL before he is given the boot.

Can’t blame him for going while his stock’s high. He knows he’ll lose half his first team and won’t get Shrewsbury as far up as he has this season next year. Still not sure Ipswich is the right gig but I guess it’s the only Championship job going.

Very promising - compensation already agreed. This appointment was always going to be hugely important for us next season. I'm happy with it (providing no late hitch becomes apparent). Seems it could be confirmed later today.

We'll do alright next season.

I'm not Hursts #1 fan, what he has done at Shrewsbury is phenomenal and fair play, I can only comment on his time at Grimsby.

He stabilised us in Non League and made us hard to beat, which is all well and good but we were looking to win the league, we were light years from doing that because he wasn't arsed about it. His attitude to the fans was pathetic, we'd travel in huge numbers to places like Fucking Woking, get beat and he'd blame the fans. In our 4th season in the confrerence we were called 'spoilt'.

He'll drop your best players and keep in the favourites (please don't question these favourites or he'll cry) and your season will follow the same pattern;

You'll start off slow whilst he gets to know what his best team is.

Then you'll go on a great winning run up until Xmas.

January comes and he'll make some dogshite signings (I can remember 2 good Jan signings in his whole time here)

The form will continue to go okay.

Then, the wheels start to come off in March, you'll limp into the play offs and without a stroke of luck (one of his favourites got injured in the play offs and he had to switch it round) you'll lose. Hurst has lost 5 of his last 6 Wembley appearances for these very reasons.

And yeah, we did dip when he left but if he hadn't had let some of our best players walk out the door for free that may not have happened.

Good luck!

On the outside it looks like a decent appointment, done a brilliant job at Shrewsbury and it’s certainly a change from the usual merry go round crew. Think Ipswich will be a tough job for anyone tbh and maybe not ideal from Hurst’s point of view but can’t blame him for taking the opportunity of a Championship club whilst it’s on offer.

From what the Grimsby fans are describing he sounds like a young Mick McCarthy... ironic

Worth a punt, i'm slightly wary about appointing managers from the leagues below because we've been strung but Hurst seems the pick of the bunch from League One.

Not really sure why people think it's a bad move for him, McCarthy was in the job for about 5 and a half years, that's an absolute lifetime in football. So it shows their owners aren't trigger happy.

Think it's a matter of time before Darrell Clarke's up here's but I pray it's not with Rovers.

I think it's a shit move for Hurst as he won't be backed but he'll keep Ipswich steady as he's already proven he can work without a budget.

Our Chief Exec is less than happy about how is gone. Seems he got a call from Hurst's agent and nothing from Ipswich. Also intimated that contact had been going on so possible illegal approach?
Rumours that the players had been told that he was off before the final.
Compensation package including Chris Doig, other backroom staff unaware and finding out via Twitter.
Hurst told players who was being retained after the game on Sunday. Not appropriate if your leaving. The new manager needs to make that decision.
All seems underhand and shady but I suppose that modern day football and for all I know we did the same when dealing with Grimsby.
Expect us to have the squad ripped apart and us to be relegated next season.

Agreed, very good manager. Nathan Jones will be up here eventually as well whether it be with Luton or someone else. He was my first choice last summer before it became apparent we were going after Cook and he’d be my first choice should Cook desert us. Surprised he’s had little interest from the higher leagues, however Luton is a big club with serious potential if they could get their new stadium and he seems in it for the long haul there.

Ipswich can do a lot better than a serial bottler that played his entire career at the tip of a town called Rotherham.

Town have responded to Shrewsbury chief executive Brian Caldwell’s comments claiming the Blues had made an illegal approach for Paul Hurst by insisting their conduct was within EFL guidelines.

In a statement to TWTD, a club spokesperson said: “We have total respect for Shrewsbury but feel we have conducted ourselves under EFL guidelines.
“We have also agreed a substantial compensation package with Shrewsbury should Paul become Ipswich Town manager."

Storm in a teacup, by the sounds of it. :)

Hurst once called our fans "spoiled" because some of them had the audacity to boo after a thrilling 0-0 draw at home to Boreham fucking Wood, then the next game away at relegation fodder FC Halifax we go 3-0 down after half an hour, cue 1700 of us chanting "we know what we are, we're fucking spoiled we know what we are"

Now confirmed.

Only going on what I've read on here. Actually have a soft spot for Grimsby. I was in hospital in 2002 after life-saving surgery and as I recovered remember seeing Grimsby v Blackburn Rovers (Championship Match) and we do have an excellent record at BP.

More likely to agree with your fans comments that Bignot was crap. I know he took on a dead duck with us after McCarthy's nightmare but we actually were worse under him. Hope you can mount a promotion challenge.
