Yeah, it all feels very familiar but Mourinho actually has a point this time. There seems to be a disconnect between his transfer plans and the board. He wants to create a team in his image with hard working players that will fit his system. However, the like of Willian and Perisic are not glamorous signings, will garner heavily inflated price tags due to their age, are not highly marketable and won't be the most useful players for a future manager to have in the squad if Mourinho ends up leaving (a distinct possibility).

I don't think the board fully trust Mourinho with their money after performances last season, they don't look anywhere close to competing for the league. This is partly his fault, but the board have had a lack of vision when it comes to improving results on the pitch, you get the feeling that they only want to sign players that will sell shirts as opposed to players that will fit into a system.

Look at what Liverpool have done in just the last 6 months. They had weaknesses at central defence, central midfield and goalkeeper. They signed world class players in those positions that will suit Klopp's high pressing possession football. That's a board with a vision that aligns with the manager's. Now look at some of the players United (Woodward) have signed since Moyes that didn't fit into each manager's system and arguably didn't fill any position of need - Fellaini, Mata (panic buy in Jan), Falcao (panic), Depay/Martial (same position), Pogba (Mourinho no clue how to use him), Sanchez (already had Rashford and Martial playing LWF). Most of these players were potentially very marketable, all of them performed below expectations due to incompatibility with the manager or negatively affected other players' development due to too much competition in one position.

I am not averse to Mourinho leaving if he's replaced by a manager that the board completely buys into, his excuses have looooong grown wearisome (he shits all over the players to protect his own hind) and he's proven that he doesn't have the ability to bring along non-proven talent. I would bite your hand off if I was offered a Conte/Mourinho traded right now. All that said, United won't get out of this 5+ year funk until they have a board that completely aligns with the manager. You can't half-support the manager back to success. Klopp and Guardiola are getting the exact players they need whilst United look like a rent version of the Galacticos. I think I would rather Woodward left than Mourinho.

Conte, Nagelsmann, other candidates that prove themselves in the next 12 months. If Mourinho ends up leaving, it'll likely be in the middle of the season if he stays true to form.

If you're referring to Woodward, whatever faceless corporate executive will do.

7/1 to be the first PL manager to leave, 4/1 according to Sky Bet.

Whatever you think of Mourinho, our problems predate him by a decade. At first, the Glazers' pillaging was masked by Fergie's genius, and now the team is good enough for top four again, they've got no reason to spend money that could simply stay in their pockets instead.

This Woodward quote sums United up: "Playing performance doesn't have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business."

We're not willing to buy the players we obviously need to compete for the biggest trophies (we're about to start the season with Valencia and Young as our first choice fullbacks...). Mourinho should be doing better with what he has and his attitude can be poor, but he's not why we aren't a proper team.

I think Pochettino is the best man for Man Utd in the mid-long term. Of course not winning anything counts against him, but he'd do better with the players given to him than Mourinho is doing.

Did Mourinho appoint a new assistant after Rui Faria left? Maybe he's missing his copycat.

Fantastic post.

Sums it up well.

Things arent going to improve until there are changes and wholesale ones. Woodward needs to go in every scenario. We need somebody is prudent in the Market not capable of panic buys.

I wouldnt be against Diego Simeone from athletico Madrid as a replacement.

This is a very good post and sums up United to a tee.

When was Klopp offered the United job? Fuck Klopp and his naive football. He's not won anything of note in six(!) years.

So you are saying he wouldn't do a better job with the players you lot have at your disposal than rugby-ball dull Mourinho has? I think you are in the minority of Utd fans there chum. And he did have an interview with Woodward before he came to us, and that corporate speak put him off entirely by all accounts. He likes a club to be a family, something Utd is clearly not.

What accounts are you talking about? I think there was talk about him joining while he still at Dortmund but he's obviously a loyal chap and I don't think it's been revealed how serious our interest was? The idea the Liverpool are a "family" club made me laugh so thanks.

Well we are not a cold faceless corporate club who only thinks about the bottom line these days, whose owners are happy to skim money from each season, keep the club in debt and support Trump. The Klopp took one look at you and thought no thanks.

Abuse, being replaced and walking alone - Support, the Liverpool way™
Nope. Online and live are entirely different as you should know. He got the loudest cheers from the supporters when he was coming on every preseason game; and online on social media is where the idiots come out so means nothing. He's also had vocal support from Klopp, Salah, VVD and Lovren, so everything is being done to help him through this.

Now on the other hand, Shaw, Martial, Valencia and the entire unders' side of Man Utd have been thrown under Jose's parked bus...

Alisson has been signed as his personal therapist too, I take it.

Bloody expensive service, he must be great.

Alisson has been scouted and spoken to since before January when we knew Mignolet was going to be buggering off. If Karius has anything about him, it will help push him on with his signing. If not, then he moves on. The ball is in his court, he's a pro sportsman, its upto him where his career lies next.

The ball being in his court is what lead to most of the problems.

Keep telling yourself that.

But do you have to ruin every thread in this place with your boring Liverpool bullshit? No wonder this section of the forum is in such decline.

Your owner built his fortune trading commodities. You're literally sponsored by Standard Chartered.

You're as corporate and faceless as any of the other awful PLCs in English football.

The Premier League is one giant corporate entity, as are the vast majority of the clubs that compete in it. If you think otherwise you're completely delusional. Yes, Manchester United as the biggest of these corporations is the most blatant example, but there is no romance at any of the top clubs any more. We can enjoy football at the highest level, but come on now, let's not kid ourselves. Manchester United are a family like Google is a family. Liverpool are a family like Facebook is a family...maybe very slightly less egregious.

Classic Mourinho.

Scenario 1: He's doing and acting all this so it's all about him and not about his players (letting them concentrate on footy)

Scenario 2: He's doing his 3rd season meltdown and will be out by Christmas.
