Portugal eh? Of course it was Portugal. It was always going to be Portugal....oh wait, never mind.

Freakin Iceland! Wow. Can't wait for Monday. This game is going to be another sludge fest, with Iceland parking the bus and defending for their lives. Can we finally break a defensive team down? Simple fact is, if we can't break them down and go out, it will be such an embarrassment for Hodgson that he will be fired. Thats a win. If we can break them down and go through, thats a win. Win-win situation for me.

As for Iceland, what a tournament they've had. Unbeaten in their 3 games, finished 2nd in a tricky group. Not got much of a goal threat, but they look ridiculously tough to break down. This is going to be incredibly tough for England.

Team for this game? Thoughts? Predictions? Are England going through, or are they about to suffer another embarrassing exit?

Well at least we now have 120 mins to break them down this time unless we concede of course but im very optimistic this time because our former centre back player Kari Arnason plays in their first team and hes a bang average championship player at best, he always seemed to struggle with pacey strikers and copes better with holding strikers so im hoping Vardy and Sturridge will start again instead of Kane. My prediction is if we get an early goal we will win about 3 or 4-0, if not then eventually we should break through being 120 mins of football and win by the odd goal, if we cant break through after that then we might aswel pack our bags wether we win on penalties or not because theres just no hope.

My team

Hart
Walker Stones Cahill Rose
Alli Dier Rooney
Lallana Sturridge Vardy

England could face Ireland in the quarters if the Greens get past us.

Ah yes, that proved your point perfectly.

How about these stats:
Iceland average possession: 29%
England average possession: 61%

Iceland shots: 23
England shots: 64

Iceland corners: 8
England corners: 26

They do park the bus(as we've seen in all 3 games) and they don't have much of a goal threat(as we've seen in all 3 games). I never made a comment on England. My statement was correct.

Yes I'm going down. Only on the day trip from Birmingham £400 absolutely scandelous but fuck it I'll be back for work Tuesday. I had originally booked a flight to Paris on Saturday on the basis we would win the group but I really can't be arsed making my way down to nice from there and doing another 3 nights in France. Deffo doing a weekend in Paris next week if we win though. Hopefully against Ireland.

Yeah, it's all about the early goal for me... if we get it we should be able to control the game and when Iceland begin to push up, as they'll have too, the floodgates could perhaps open. On the other hand, 0-0 at 70 minutes would fill me with dread.

Lol absolutely no way are England going to win this 3/6-0. Yeah player for player Iceland have got nothing to scare us (and it's a country of about 40 people) but they are a fucking solid unit. Beat the Dutch twice in qualifying, finishing above Turkey, kept Ronaldo out in the group stages. They won't be afraid of England.

Completely different setup if we score first, hence me stating the significance.
That solid unit can't remain so in a KO game if they fall begind.

If we found ourselves 2-0 up at HT I can see it finishing 4/5-1. If we don't, we could find ourselves in trouble to a late goal or ET/pens.

All that proves to me is they make it count, which is something England are absolutely atrocious at. All that possession, all those corners, all those (inaccurate) shots... less goals. Can England honestly say they mullered anyone? No. Has a goalie played a blinder and stopped us scoring 3, 4, 5? No. Have we created chance after chance and squandered them all? Not really.

And hey remember what happened when they went down a goal to Portugal? Didn't exactly fold like a pack of cards did they?

What does any of that have to do with my original statement, which you took exception to? Do they park the bus? Yes. Do they have much of a goal threat? No, not really. Not really sure what you are disputing here.

I'm glad we're up against Iceland instead of Portugal, but I can see this one taking a similar pattern to the group games. As others have said, an early goal would put us in a great position to progress. If that doesn't happen, it'll be another nervy night with lots of possession but few clear chances.

I'd go with the side that started against Russia and Wales, with Sturridge replacing Sterling.

Totally forgot how Iceland recklessly sent men forward at 1-0 down against Portugal and got easily picked off on the break thereafter to get thrashed.

Despite historical results between the pair, we're a slightly different proposition to Portugal in this tournament. Albeit no world beaters by any stretch after the underwhelming group games.

Shooting a bit more will help - the other night we simply just seemed to end up passing the ball around in front of the Slovak defences just for the sake of it which they loved.

So would Iceland..

Tricky game as Smat and some others have said. It's about being more clinical. The few chances we do get we need to take. Iceland will have to come out eventually if we take the lead with it being a knockout game. I'd revert to the team that started against Russia and Wales with Sterling and Kane coming out for Vardy and Sturridge.

Why? It's proven to be utter shit.

Stop trying to be Spain with pace. Play Sturridge, Kane, Vardy and be prepared to concede possession a bit more.

I think that's about right as Iceland are not the sort of team who are going to hurt us when we give away possession. That's not to denigrate them but they're not like Portugal in that respect.

I fear Iceland will get a shock win, you can see it happening especially as we have that stupid twat Hodgson making awful decisions.

2-0

England's first routine victory of the tournament. As good as Iceland are defensively, I don't see them holding England for 120 minutes and England are a better side than any they've faced so far. I reckon the knockouts will see a slightly more attacking approach from the minnows (in general, not just Iceland), as they don't have to think about goal difference in order to qualify.

Sturridge to score within the first half hour, Iceland to hang on until the last 10 minutes and makes things a bit nervy, Vardy to finish them off on the break as they open up. England fans to be buoyed by the performance, only for their hopes to be dashed in the next round.

As most have suggested, revert to Russia with the addition of Vardy and Sturridge and I expect we'll come through just fine.

I don't think we're allowed to field 13 players. Rules and that.
