I hear what you’re saying regarding CD, but he’s far from injury prone (if that’s what you’re implying?) - which is what you would usually expect from a player of his age.

I recall when we signed Gary Jones at the tender age of 36 and thinking the same, but he was absolutely phenomenal for the club.

He will be perfect foil for Eoin Doyle next season.

The non-league player (French) is a squad player, but again, he’s very highly rated and sought after - along with the new LB from Scotland. There’s every chance Henley could start at LB.

Henley seems to be a player who has just found football in the US difficult adapting too. I honestly know nothing about him and his injuries. I always just presumed he’s been a squad player wherever he has been - but at this level, he should be a decent addition. I can’t see him starting in front of Kelvin Mellor, but we’ll just have to see.

The squad is beginning to take some shape, and I’m confident that our defence is already stronger than last season.

Quietly confident, but next season will be very, very competitive.
Having thought about it, I'd guess most signings at this level attach some risk to them, otherwise they wouldn't play at this level . It's up to the manager to get the best out of what he's got and have a bit of luck with the gambles.

With CD, it's more the fact that he's 35 and I always thought he was someone who relied on pace. I don't think fitness is an issue, it's whether he has the legs to lead a line effectively any more. Could be inspired, could be an expensive mistake.

I don’t recall him ever really being blessed with blistering pace. He’s renowned for his hold up play and general quality on the ball - not to mention his ability to finish well.

It reminds me of when we signed your old friend, Peter Thorne. Although he was injury prone, when fit he was absolutely quality - even though his legs had gone - he did manage to notch 32 goals in 77 at this level. We signed him from Cardiff at the time (Champ), where he returned 2 goals in 42 app. Similar to Donaldson in so many ways. The rest is history.

Anyway, he’s a blast from the past; Thorney running rings round your defence.

A 90 year old could of run rings round that 2008/09 defence.

Whenever anyone ever brings up age, I remember Jamie Cureton. We signed him when he was about 35 and he was nearly top scorer in the league that season. Absolutely deadly.
Still banging them in at 41 I think...

Can’t say that I’m thrilled by the Wright signing (he’s was a bit of a lightweight crab of a footballer during his last spell IMHO), but he was fantastic for Justin Edinburgh at Gillingham, and I hope he’ll get his backside in gear in memory of the gaffer. Wonderful interview with the club about his relationship with JE.

Not surprised that he struggled at Bradford. Clearly not someone that wants to be outside of the south east and making a fancy dan Essex tart like him the captain of a traditional, working class club in a shithole like Bradford was never going to work out.

Precisely. Cureton was a class act at 35 and one of the best L1 strikers that season. He was still scoring loads in the league at age 39 and I think he’s actually going to be 44 this August and is still playing at a solid level.

Some good signings. I would say some are a bit of a risk. Clayton Donaldson would have been amazing 3 or 4 years ago but surely his legs have gone. There are a couple of others, I. E. The ones from non league/Scotland which could go either way, and the lad that has come back from the States seems injury prone. You've got a good manager, so I still see you as one of the autos but seems like some of these signings are a potential risk and quite hasty before the end of June . Hornby will be your number one though, cracking keeper.

We've just signed meh so far. I'm hoping that we're saving our budget for 2 quality front players as our defence and midfield are almost there.
But we wouldn’t have been able to sign him 3 or 4 years ago. You have to accept that when signings these types of players you either have them very young or on the way down. To go from playing a fair few games in the championship last season to DIv 2 makes me think although his pace may have gone but his legs haven’t gone

He’ll fall to the ground in a heap even more convincingly now.

Speaking of ageing strikers, rumours in Nottingham suggest that Daryl Murphy is heading to Valley Parade.

Undoubted quality but I’m uneasy with the wages he’ll demand - even at this level.

Newport have signed Marvel Ekpiteta from Hungerford - His twin brother Marvin plays for us.

Both have been highly rated in the National League South for a while, Marvin was superb for us last season when we went up and will play higher. Think we rejected a few bids for him in January.

Marvel is highly rated as bell, both ball playing CBs and quick for big men.

Agree, plus now we have Donaldson I'm not sure we'd need Murphy too. Think we need some pace up front now.

James Hanson has his contract at AFC Wimbledon terminated by mutual consent which would suggest the rumours are true about him coming here.
I think any player prepared to take a pay cut to go to a club and play regular rather than just sitting on his arse to earn more money at another club is a great pro in my book so good on him.

He’s barely going to be on a absolute fortune at the Wombles.

Some wanky Twitter site says we’re interested in Robbie Simpson.

I’m basing my ‘meh’ stance on the fact that these rumours are almost always a load of shite.

I’ll eat my own shit if we sign him

What will you eat if you don't sign him?

I’m sure it’s nonsense as most of these rumours are but he really shouldn’t be in L2. Works his bollocks off tbf and is lovely bloke but he scores about 2 goals per season.
