Pre-ordered one this morning - long time Nintendo fan, and there's lots to love about this new installment, but I can't help but feel incredibly disappointed at a lot of the launch:

1. I've never seen so few games at launch for a launch console. And for me, the only one I will bother buying is Zelda. This console will quickly need to get a number of other top quality games, and a largely number of top quality 3rd party games, or it'll fall flat again pretty quickly like the U.

2. The cost of additional controllers and accessories is just eye watering. £65 for the pro controller is obscene. Especially as Nintendo have usually been so good at keeping the cost of controllers low.

3. No Sports games at all at launch, or coming out in the near future. Doesn't matter so much as I also have an Xbox One, but as Sports games make up well over half of my playtime, would like to see most of the main titles make their way over.

4. No bundles, everything is costing you full price, and no discounts for ordering for day one. Can imagine that being a huge barrier to purchase for a lot of people.

And yet... I'm still very excited for this, and pre-ordered straight away. The new Zelda game looks fantastic.

There are, right now a grand total of FOUR games coming out on launch

They are:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Ok, yes, this looks superb.

1-2-Switch - Has anybody else seen the trailer for this? I absolutely implore you to. Oh, not because it looks great. Oh No. Simply because I'm quite sure that it may be the single wankiest game trailer I've ever watched in my life. Absolutely laughably awful.

Skylanders Imaginators - EEEEEEEEH.

Just Dance 2017 - EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHH.

Art thou shitteth oneself, brethren?

With this in mind, I'm tempted just to stick to getting the Zelda game on the Wii U. At least I can then get the first fucking use out of that thing for over a year.

Here is EVERYTHING else:
  • Has Been Heroes (March 2017)
  • Super Bomberman R (March 2017)
  • Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together! (March 2017)
  • I am Setsuna (March 2017)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (April 28, 2017)
  • Sonic Mania (Spring 2017)
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris (Spring)
  • Lego City Undercover (Spring 2017)
  • Arms (Spring 2017)
  • Redout (Spring 2017)
  • The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ (Spring 2017)
  • Splatoon 2 (Summer 2017)
  • NBA 2K18 (September 2017)
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Autumn 2017)
  • Super Mario Odyssey (Holiday 2017)
  • Fire Emblem Warriors (Holiday 2017)
  • Minecraft Nintendo Switch (2017)
  • Minecraft Story Mode (2017)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017)
  • Ultra Street Fighter 2 (2017)
  • Dragon Quest Heroes 1&2 (2017)
  • Dragon Quest X (2017)
  • Dragon Quest XI (2017)
  • FIFA 17 (2017)
  • Steep (2017)
  • Rayman Legends Definitive Edition (2017)
  • Shin Megami Tensei (2017)
  • Farming Simulator (2017)
  • Fast RMX (2017)
  • Dragonball Xenoverse 2 (2017)
  • Stardew Valley (TBD)
  • Yooka-Laylee (TBD)
  • Seasons of Heaven (TBD)
  • The Sacred Hero (TBD)
Mario will more likely than not be a winner, because it usually fucking is, and I'm liking the idea of playing a console Fire Emblem game... but holy shit would you look at the rest of that. Games that have been out for a while on other consoles like FIFA (yes, it is getting a sports game Magpiebee), Skyrim, Minecraft, FIFA... and fucking Lego City Undercover?! Or stuff that's coming out on other consoles anyway like Sonic Mania. And my god, have you actually checked out ARMS? Holy mother of god. That's another one I implore people to actually have a look at. For the same reasons as 1-2-Switch.

Unless you need to play Zelda on the switch instead of the Wii U, there is legitimately not a single reason to own this until Mario comes out, and that's only if that game is actually any good. This probably has to be the worst console launch I ever remember. Fucking awf... hang on a sec...

"Super Bomberman R"...?

Oaf its not a regular fire emblem game. It's a warriors/musou game. So a dynasty/samurai warriors style game like how hyrule warriors was.

If you want a console FE experience then there's the wii and GameCube ones but they're pretty expensive.

FE Warriors and Shin Megami Tensei V are my highlights. They're both gonna be ages away though. Pretty happy by the trailer that they're going to 3D models and not 2d cutouts like SMT IV had.

Hopefully now that they're charging for online that doesn't include trading Pokemon because that's about all I do for "online multiplayer" on Nintendo systems and fuck paying to do that.

Yeah. The line up is pretty fucking terrible. Mario, Mario Kart and Zelda mean I want the console, and I love the idea of playing FIFA on the go, won't bother buying until FIFA18 though as by the looks of the schedule that'll only be a few weeks after 17 comes out.

At least with the Wii U even there were some interesting other titles out, like ZombieU, but this is just terrible.

I'm not even sure why Nintendo are bothering to rush out a release, might as well wait until Christmas and launch with a huge line up of games. Maybe it's because suckers like me will buy a Nintendo console regardless...

Nintendo really need a strong launch to get back in the race, and a console is as only as good as its games.

Zelda alone at launch ain't gonna cut it. Where's the new Metroid title? Why not wait and launch the console when Splatoon 2 and Mario are ready? Why is everything so ridiculously expensive? The Wii's low price was a big selling point when Nintendo "won" that generation of console war.

I'm not too hopeful, here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its unique selling point seems to be that it doubles as a handheld, meaning you can play while on-the-move. How many people play handheld devices outside the home anymore? I use London transport everyday, meaning I see upwards a million individual commuters every year and I honestly can't remember the last time I saw someone playing with a DS or a PS Vita on the tube. Most handheld play outside is done on phones, with games that don't require your attention for more than 30 secs-to-a-minute at a time. Ain't no-one in the 21st century got time to play Skyrim on their commute to work.

It will useful for play at home for kids, especially when mum and dad need to use the telly, but the Wii U already mostly offered that sort of functionality with its gamepad streaming feature. How many parents are honestly going to be on this at that price? You might as well get the little un a PS4 or a dramatically price-reduced Wii U.

Think Nintendo are fucked in the home console market long term. Expect them to go big on smartphone gaming when this inevitably tanks. What they really need is a sustainable, cheap console that they can develop good games for over the very long term. Graphical fidelity isn't likely to improve that much from this point, so I don't know why they didn't wait a few years to develop a high-end console on the cheap. The Switch is so gimmicky its gimmick is even inscribed into the title.

I was 90% going to pre-order this before the press conference - I am now not.

Sketchy battery life - '3 hours playing Zelda' and subtract an hour for dev time etc...
launch titles are pathetic
most of the focus seems to be on the joy cons - they made it seem like it was a fucking wii.
they market it as a home console primarily but it's more expensive than the far superior PS4/Xbone

stop making consoles Nintendo and just develop games, make them available on all platforms and rake the money in.

One big point they seem to be pushing is this idea that you can play split screen with it as a portable console. Play Mario Kart multiplayer on the go!

But... I have a 3DS. I went up to Wembley for the league 2 play off final and did that all the fucking way back. With 5 of us. Sat in our own seats, with our own screens, rather than crowding around one screen. The Switch can't even beat another Nintendo console FSS...

As a side note, the Mario Kart brought us a lot more entertainment than the fucking playoff final :hb:

Oaf its not a regular fire emblem game. It's a warriors/musou game. So a dynasty/samurai warriors style game like how hyrule warriors was.

Well, there goes an entire third of my reason to want the console

Already pre-ordered. I'm back, Nintendo!

£280 is a bit steep, and £60 a game is ridiculous. Nintendo have missed a trick here, with the hype surrounding the console. They needed to get the pricing right, and they haven't. Having said that, pre-orders are selling out everywhere.

I held off on the Wii U (and never bought it) as they was never a killer title that justified. Launching with Zelda and then a Mario Kart I never owned shortly after is enough to warrant buying early IMO. Then Mario Odyssey to follow later in the year. Happy days.

Just hope the rumours are right, and Beyond Good & Evil 2 is coming as an exclusive (surely it would have been shown at the presentation if so?). Been waiting over a decade for that game ffs.

Hm. I guess if you never had a Wii U and Mario Kart 8, it's possibly worth looking at. I still think that Mario Kart 8 is the best Mario Kart that's ever been released.

I expect we'll see a lot more from third parties at E3. I remember some third parties in the past saying that their sales were hit massively if they released games at launch when up against a big Mario game. Exact same applies with Zelda.

Nintendo's Dreamcast. Like Sega 15 years ago I can see Nintendo exiting the console hardware market after this and concentrate on producing games for the Xbox and PS4/5/6 etc. This thing will be a monumental flop, like the Wii U only worse. They can't even rely on their bread and butter Gameboy handheld market any more as the arse has completely dropped out of that due to mobile phone and tablet gaming.

Kind of off topic but was Beyond Good and Evil really that good?
Honest question, I never played it but what little I saw of it it looked very average. What is it that has people holding it in such high regard?

More on topic now, if Nintendo can utilize all their IP's then the switch could be a success. I'd probs get a switch just for the new Zelda and potential Bayonetta 3, plus if they can actually give fans what they want (new Metroid for example, not that Prime force shite) then they should be good.

To be fair, everybody said the same about Nintendo after the Wii U as well but they somehow survived that

But yes, I do agree that the Switch is the last straw. For real, this time. To survive Nintendo needed to do something amazing and overwhelmingly positive looking but this doesn't seem to have really captured anybodies interest. It'd be best for everybody if they just stick to making games for other consoles and Mobile.

By the way, completely unrelated but while you're here LIVERPOOL 0 PLYMOUTH 0 HOW DOES IT FEEL PAGNELL.

To be fair people said the Wii was gonna be a flop, look what happened there...

I reckon that if they push a Pokémon game out soonish they will do well. This console has good family appeal. It's been a while since Xbox1 and PS4 launched. People who buy this may already have a console and look to this as something different.

Overpriced would be an understatement. Look at the specs compared to PS4/XB1, not even on their level yet more expensive.

I think the reason for an early release even with a small number of games is to build the nintendo brand up again in time for Christmas. It's no good releasing closer to Christmas with more titles when people will still be unsure about the console itself.
If on release people say it's great but needs more titles, come Santa time it should have plenty and have that appeal.

One thing I didn't notice is if it has a sim card slot or something like blackberry messenger or imessage. It could do with it.

I got all ready to explode at the Wii being called a flop before Blitzballer said he meant the Wii U. The Wii was utter shite, and probably started the end for Nintendo... but it raked in cash like crazy.

I say it was the beginning of the end because it attracted the casuals while fucking off the core gamers. Then the Wii U came out and the casuals either didn't know it was a new console, or didn't care because they never touched their Wii... while the core gamers had already lost interest in Nintendo. The only people left to buy it were Nintendo fanboys and idiots like me who just can't say no to a shiny new console.

Good stuff! Looking forward to that.

This being said, I never touched the most recent FE games on the 3DS... I do intend to, I swear...

screen resolution is the very very least of it's problems. Terrible online functionality/service, insulting pricing for peripherals/accessories (some of which startlingly don't come in the box), no 3rd party support, sketchy details on 1st party games other than 2 games in the next 6 months. It's DOA at the moment.

The idea of a 2017 console only supporting TV output of 1080p maximum (and on some games not even that) is frankly ludicrous. This is definitely one for hardcore Nintendo fans and those that buy new consoles simply because they're new (ie Oaf). I'd put good money on this being a monumental flop, something even Nintendo knows I suspect which explains the lacklustre launch.

I feel sorry for the idiots who gives a shit what the tv output is. Who gives a fuck? As long as the games are fun, why does it matter?

Year 1 of the Switch is better than the entire history of the Wii U, so I don't really understand people on here slamming it's lineup. Zelda alone will sell systems (hence pre-orders selling out everywhere), and Mario Odyssey will sell systems. Third party support will mean nothing to Nintendo, but I do expect to see more at E3. Hell, there's even talk of many publishers (including Rockstar for the first time ever) working on games. Year 2 will be even bigger when the big Pokemon game lands.

I do think Nintendo have fucked up on the price though. Much more than I expected, and could well have put a fair number off.
