I still think a forward should be allowed half a yard and be onside, it would make for more goals, and maybe defenders will try to defend properly then.

Agreed, but taking it away entirely is just silly, changes the way football is played for everyone if the strikers can just sit at the edge of the box and wait for a long ball to come to them.

I should have mentioned in the OP that personally I think his idea is a load of bollocks and would ruin the game, although I could see the likes of Allardyce parking a couple of forwards in the oppositions box.

The problem/dislike I have with offside decisions is that so many are given for instances when the forward going player needs only to have a very slight part of his body (eg arm, knee, outstretched leg) to be deemed to be offside.....and because of this imo linesmen in the majority of cases play safe and give offside when the player is later shown to be level or onside but I do realise that it is difficult for linesmen. Anyway for what it's worth I would like to see the offside rule relaxed to the extent that 'the whole body' of the forward going player is behind the defender before being deemed offside.

Ridiculous! I agree with the above on the marginally offside being allowed as defenders seem to have lost the art to defend. It'd sharpen them up a great deal but abolishing it would just lead to as mentioned; hoofing the ball up to two strikers hovering in the six yard box. I'd be open to the idea of a sin bin idea like in rugby for a yellow card offence. I reckon it'd reduce the likelihood of a team with ten men holding out for a draw, knowing they'd get a man back in ten minutes but would penalise them enough to upset their momentum and game plan that they'd be less likely to commit to an offence in the first place.

That's the only change in the offside rule I would accept (ok, I would have to accept every brain fart of FIFA Officials because I don't have anything to say but you know what I mean :D ). Like a goal is only a goal when the ball is completely behind the goal-line, an out is an out when the ball is completely behind the sidelines.

What comes next? Increase the scoreline because Americans are bored with low scoring football matches. 6 points for a goal. 1 point for a shot over the goalbar so we can have American Football scores? ;)

I think there should be no offside from 18 yard line when the ball is played from the attacking half.

We had a pissy wee tourney in the 70's called the Dryborough Cup. In the early 70's they experimented with the offside rule. A dotted line (iirc) was extended from the outermost corners of the 18 yard box to the sidelines and a player could only be deemed offside within the extended 18 yard area. Think it only lasted for 3 years and died a death.

Had to laugh at a comment on a Burnley forum regards this. Our striker Andre Gray is constantly off-side, it's a part of his game that needs vast improvement.
Anyway a comment read

'If they get rid of off-sides Andre Gray would be worth £100 million, I'm all for it'

Made me chuckle anyway.

Agree with Leo, refs need to be more lenient with offsides (except with United ) but abolishing it completely is dumb.

Yep thats why I suggest a tolerance of half a yard.

Just harping back to my previous post on this....there was an offside given a few minutes ago in the Chelsea game where Costa was adjudged to be offside...it was a fucking ludicrous decision as his moving forward meant he was, as the commentators said, leaning forward and it could only have been a matter of inches of his body that was behind the defender. Utter fucking nonsense.

I think instead of it being offsides if any part of the body is offsides, it should be onside of any part of the body is onside.
