We've been crying out for this for so long! Hopefully we can recreate the atmosphere we used to have at Gay Meadow

So glad we've been allowed to keep ours for another couple of years, though I'm sure we'll just continue to stand in the new stadium even if there are just normal seats

Depressing that it's taken this long for a club to do this but bravo to Shrewsbury for being the first one. It's nice to see their supporters' group have been listened to as well.

Well done and I hope it's replicated through out the country sooner rather than later.

Story running in the Mail that we also want to implement safe standing at Sixfields. They've billed it as an EXCLUSIVE when in reality our supporters trust have been talking to the board about doing it for the past year. Fingers crossed it happens.

There are 7 EFL clubs who can install safe standing without a change in government legislation those are:
Shrewsbury
Northampton
Colchester
Chesterfield
Bury
Oxford
Mansfield

Just read that clubs in the top 2 divisions can't put it in without a law change so it's down to you boys. All we can do is 'express an interest'. Burton and Brentford might be able to do something as they have terracing although Brentford are moving.
Out of interest, City installed some safe standing prior to the redevelopment as a feasibility study along with the Football Supporters group. Obviously, we couldn't use it but here it is.

It's a ridiculous situation, both fans and clubs want it, It's used extensively throughout Europe without causing any problems and yet the Government still drag their feet

The daftest thing is, if any club in L1 put it in and got promoted, they would have to rip it out again IF they are currently all seater. Even if they're not, the 3 season rule currently applies as it does for terracing.
I've been doing a bit of research (asking a City fan who formed the national fans advisory group on safe standing TBH) and even Brentford, who haven't even laid a brick on their new stadium site, cannot utilise safe standing without a law change. Burton, could use it but would have to take it out again in 2 years if they stay up for that time.
Utterly farcical.

It does feel like the intention is to appear rhetorically open minded and inclusive of supporters' wishes - whilst still making it as difficult as possible to implement in practical reality.

Exactly Mark. The only way this will happen is if a lower division club take a gamble on not being promoted to the higher division, where the financial benefits are higher, yet will find the money to change their stadium.
Maybe a club will put it in with the hope that the law will have changed before they would need to take it out, should they get promotion? It's a fair old financial risk.

Surely it wouldn't need to be ripped out, just always used in the seated position?

What the authorities are failing to address is the fact that standing in a seated area isn't safe. The seat backs are way too low and people could and probably have toppled over them. In a large stadium it's almost impossible to get everyone to sit down - including Anfield. Surely it's better to install rail seating and ensure that those who insist on standing are safe?

Incidentally, I believe that the ratio is two standing to every one seated. If tickets are sold giving the exact row, and stewards police this correctly, there shouldn't be overcrowding.

No, we tried to do that. Once you're all seater, you currently cannot be anything else but all seater in the top 2 divisions. We asked if we could use our trial safe standing area with the seats down but this was assigned as illegal.
I would imagine the rules will change but, as I understand it, safe standing areas would need to revert to properly seated areas in the scenario mentioned.
Madness, I know.

Absolutely spot on on both counts.
I've actually been hurt because of standing in a seated area where my team scored (we do sometimes) and the guy next to me who was a big lad bumped into me and sent me sprawling over 3 rows of seats, landing on a large metal bar running across the pitch, breaking a couple of ribs.
Personally, I don't think anyone is against safe standing but a law change is required for it be be implemented league wide. I can't see that being particularly high on the governments list of priorities TBH atm.
It's actually illegal to stand in a seated area but nobody enforces it or rather very few clubs do.

Well played Shrewsbury for stepping forward on this and taking a PR and financial risk.

I think it will become the norm in time and Shrewsbury will have a feather in their cap, but as we know the wheels of change turn very slowly in England.
