The Huddersfield fiasco

?

Was Wagner right to field a weakened team vs Birmingham City this weekend?

It wasn't even a weak team. It's a squad game nowadays. It was the same side minus Van La Parra and plus Tommy Smith (the EFL Championship RB of the season) that took Man City to a replay in the FA Cup.

I suppose they should have played the 'full strength' side that lost to us, Burton and Forest in recent weeks without so much as scoring a goal in order to protect the integrity of the competition.

I do think Huddersfield should be fined purely on the basis that we were. The whole thing is bollocks but you can't fine one club and not another for exactly the same thing.

Again I repeat it's farcial that this is even a rule to begin with, but there needs to be some clarity on the issue.

So did Walsall and Ipswich break them too? Why no mention of our win at Wigan?

Personally think the EFL having no problem with owners of clubs like yourselves, Blackpool and Orient is worse for the integrity of the league.

And yet here they are picking problems with the likes of ourselves and Bradford, clubs that are run properly, treat the fans well and give youth a chance. And I never thought I'd be sticking up for them ffs

But as Walkley has pointed out, other teams have done it and not been punished. The rule is too subjective (not to mention being a stupid rule in the first place) and they're not applying it with any consistency.

Got a point. If thats the case though I think we are owned an explanation by the FA why some teams like ourselves are fined for this stupid rule, yet others haven't. The rule should be scrapped anyway, the point in having a squad is that you can use it to whatever way the manager seems fit, not to use the same starting 11 every week all season. Also as someone pointed out earlier in the thread, it is also insulting to many players who are described as 'weaker' than the rest of the squad.

It's simple in my opinion, make a rule that 8 (roughly) players must have played at least 50% (roughly) of the season in all competitions, or make a rule where you can't make more than 6 changes to a team (subject to injuries, suspensions and eligibility in competitions)

We weren't fined for losing to Rotherham, which in my opinion is as bad as Huddersfield as we did this to ensure we were able to field a strong (not that we have been strong this season) side against Wednesday and forest.

Or just let the managers decide who plays. There doesn't need to be any outside involvement. If teams know they're going to get punished for playing a team not deemed to be the first XI, then would that then make clubs less inclined to play youth prospects and give them a chance? Seeing as the EFL are 'all about giving youth a chance' this season, then this 'ruling' makes no sense from that angle. We've already had the farce with Luton being fined thousands for playing young, English kids in the FL Trophy (and winning a few games, by the way), whilst Shaun Harvey and his EFL lackies sit there congratulating themselves for giving more English kids a chance at competitive football - as long as they play for one of the bigger sides. If you absolutely HAVE to have a ruling, then do what the Premier League do. Have a (for example) 25 man squad, which doesn't include players under 21, and just let the managers choose who they want to play when. Otherwise there might as well be no managers.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Man United getting fined in the 3rd round of the cup next season when they make 11 changes like they do every year.

Can't see it being an issue, if the majority of the squad have played this season, then not sure what the EFL can do

EFL Statement: "Elsewhere last weekend, we saw Huddersfield Town make wholesale changes to their team that played Birmingham City. It is very much a subjective matter to determine what constitutes a ‘full strength’ side, however the disappointment of both Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest is understandable.

Huddersfield have been asked for their observations and reasons for taking the approach that they did. This type of approach is another challenge to the integrity of the competition, albeit a different one to the actions of supporters. We have reminded all Clubs this week as to their obligations in this area."

Yeah read that, and the "not our fault" part regarding Leyton Orient at Colchester too, the EFL being two faced by not pulling up Vale or Ipswich.

Or Bradford, who apparently rested 9 at Rochdale last sunday.

Fuss over nothing.. it was hardly the kids from what has been shown above.

It's because they lost against 10 men so the issue has been brought up.

Will we all be fined after the first round of the league cup when most of our clubs make 8-9 changes?

See Jose has already come out and already said players 'with more mileage' will be rested against Arsenal, will be interesting to see what the side is. It's obvious they're resting players as they believe their easiest route into the champions league is by winning the europa league. Does this not damage the integrity of the league?

The EFL don't govern the Premier League so pretty irrelevant.

True enough, but don't the PL have their own similar rule? Just waiting for it to get ignored (again). Just the opinion that PL and FL should have the same rules.

It's a ridiculous conversation to have over a ridiculous rule. It's a squad game. And if my lot or Forest fans moan about it then it's just sour grapes. We've played the same amount of games as everyone else in the league and find ourselves in the position we're in down to how poor we've been and not because Huddersfield decided to rest a few players against one of our relegation rivals. Would Rovers or Forest care if the roles were reversed? Not at all. It's about looking after your own club, not the interests of those floundering at the bottom.

For what It's worth we played an absolute dogshit team against Blackburn (George Saville playing left back is basically handing them 3 points) and they still couldn't beat us.

You have colleagues that know about the Championship? And Huddersfield? And that football is played with more than ten men? Impressed.

My work colleagues know what most Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City players have tweeted, eaten and shagged but not a lot else.

The FA are considering charges against Lambert for NOT making ten changes last Saturday.

Can you let us know which players are eligible for Huddersfield to play from their squad? I think it is important that Blackburn and Forest supporters pick the team for the last few games. ffs

(And no, we're not making the mistake)

Yeah, mainly all Scottish fitba talk but there's a handful of Championship fans who are keen. I'm quite thankful really because the Rangers/Celtic thing gets boring after the 9th time they've played each other in a season.

When Mad Mick managed Wolves, and subsequently got fined for playing squad players against Man Utd ~ that was Prem Rules.
Mourhino now says in advance he'll do the same. Under Prem rules will he be fined? Or just mind-games?
Huddersfield played again 10 men for 75 minutes. Similarly they had in excess of 65% posession.
I think it's the fact that they lost that is causing concern, and although they were very attacking and front-foot throughout, I think the mindset amongst players who might feel they were just 'making-up-the-numbers' is quite important.

All Huddersfield have been asked for is a comment.
And I don't know of any EFL club ever being fined for this, whereas they have in the Prem.
