Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)

A priest tries to stop a recently-released gangster from exerting his influence on a gang of kids as well as the local police force.

Classic Cagney and the least intimidating street gang you've ever seen.

9/10
Aye you'd give them a wee slap and they'd run off to mummy. Good ending though.

Preferered the original which was far fetched but this film took the piss throughout  Plenty of wtf moments and unintentional 's. 5/10.

I just watched that new Power Rangers film... it was alright, to be fair. Like, not great, perhaps not even good, but not the worst movie in the world (which let's face it, it totally could have been) and generally better than I expected a modern day Power Rangers movie could be.

The single biggest flaw with the film is the fact that it only uses the Power Rangers theme ONCE and just for like 20 seconds. WHY HAVE A THEME THAT AWESOME AND BARELY USE IT?!

I watched Netflix's Shimmer Lake without knowing all too much going into it. It's a crime thriller with a twist. Each day is presented in reverse order, starting from Friday. It was a pretty novel style of storytelling. Perhaps it made it slightly difficult to follow, but not too much. I enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed this. Far better than the live action films. 8/10.

Laura (1944)

Another Preminger noir. This one is about a murdered woman, the suspects, and a detective who finds himself falling in love with the victim.

The film wasn't bad but the plot wasn't anything special and not one of the characters was likeable.

Denzel Washington and Viola Davis on top form in Fences. The scene in the first 20 minutes with Washington going off on a drunken rant many of us can relate to was quality. Throughly enjoyed it. :)

A brilliant film based on a true story. Set between 1862 and 1876 this film tells the story of Newton Knight a Confederate desrter who sets up a camp in the swamps of Mississipi for fellow deserters and runaway slaves. The acting, battle scenes and dialolgue were all top notch but there were some harrowing scenes as you would expect from the time and what happened to slaves back then. 8.5/10.

Panic in the Streets (1950)

Gangsters shoot a fleeing associate to death. A coroner realises that the victim was on the verge of death anyway; he was suffering from the pneumonic plague. Fears of an epidemic soon spread as the potentially infected killers are on the run.

I really enjoyed this one, interesting plot and great tension.

Caged (1950)

A young, first-time offender is sent to a women's prison where she transforms from a frightened, naive girl to a harsh cynic.

Wonderful film, completely depressing. Eleanor Parker and Hope Emerson were brilliant in their respective roles.

Are you watching every film released in order since the end of World War 2?

Just on a bit of a film noir binge at the moment!

I'm thinking of moving on to zombie films next.

Out of interest, why do you watch films in "blocks". I still remember your Carry On binge last year.

Why not jump genre after each film?

It's just something I've always done really, I do the same thing with music genres, literary genres etc.

I think it's a small way to give a little bit of focus to my otherwise directionless existence!

I don't think I did a Carry On binge, by the way (though I do like some of those films), but I recently did Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, 80s horror and giallo binges and documented them on here.

I did every Carry On film and posted them here apart from Emanuelle which wasn't a Carry On at all and more like soft porn.

Brute Force (1947)

Burt Lancaster and his cellmates plan a prison break.

Another prison noir, another gem. It didn't quite have the emotional impact of Caged but it was still a great watch. Hume Cronyn (what a name) was excellent as the SS-esque prison guard-turned-warden.

Hume Cronyn (what a name) and SS-esque (what a word) ;)

btw: The right man has "Robert Carlyle" Eyes. Kim Carnes (if she still sings) should make a cover of her own "Bette Davis Eyes" song

You're right, he does look quite a bit like an older Carlyle!

Hilarious film,a hurrican hits LA and thousands of sharks are sucked up in tornadoes and dumped on the city cue mayhem  It really was as bad as it sounds but in a good way full of laughs and comedy scenes with dodgy looking sharks, 5.5/10 for all the 's.

Is that the one where Gianni Michaels gets half eaten whilst topless and paragliding? (Btw if you don't know who Gianni is Mowgli, don't look her up, it'll not do your ticker good at your age )

The Face Behind the Mask (1941)

Hungarian man travels to America to earn enough money to afford a better life for himself and his partner. He takes temporary accommodation in a hotel that burns down, leaving his face horribly disfigured. He then turns to a life of crime in order to fund the plastic surgery needed to return his face to normal.

Very good, I just wish it wasn't so short (just about over an hour).

Sharknado 2: The Second One (2014)
Even funnier than the first one. Starts off with sharks swimming in the clouds attacking a passenger plane where Kelly Osbourne plays a stewardess and i can confirm her acting is as bad as her singing but thank god she doesn't last long  The clouds turn into tornadoes which dump sharks on New York cue more bad acting and comical deaths  6/10.

I watched Anthropoid, which is a factually accurate depiction of the assassination attempt on Heydrich "The Butcher of Prague" in Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia. It was a bit of WW2 history I wasn't at all familiar with and an interesting story too. Film-wise it was slightly reminiscent of The Pianist; it avoided a lot of the typical action/thriller tropes and usual beats.

I watched that recently and wasn't that impressed. In the first hour fuck all happened but the 2nd hour was better,i know it has to build up how they prepared to kill the bastard but felt it could have been a bit more interesting but being based on a true story i suppose there's only so much you can do with the film.
