Bringing back the release list thread from it's unprecedented demise last night.

Under contract at Crewe:

Ben Garratt (2019)
James Jones (2018)
Chris Dagnall (2018)
George Cooper (2018)
Zoumana Bakayogo (2018) (May still leave as the player and not Artell triggered the extension)
Daniel Udoh (2018) - (May potentially be moved on due to Artell seemingly not rating him.)
Ryan Wintle (2018)
Callum Ainley (2018)
Charlie Kirk (2018) - (May potentially be moved on due to Artell disliking his poor attitude)
Tommy Lowery (2018)
Owen Dale (2018)
Harry Pickering (2018)
Ross Woodcock (2018)
Josh Lundstram (2018)
Lewis Reilly (2018)

Out of contract:

Ollie Turton - RELEASE: Serial loser, constantly at fault for goals and a bastion of mediocrity under Davis. Somehow became a fans favourite for an unexplained reason, League One interest from Shrewsbury and Oldham (the fools) will see him almost certainly leave this Summer. Should have been released a long time ago but was a Davis favourite.

Jon Guthrie - RELEASE: A masterstroke considering he was signed from Pewsey Vale of the Wessex League (since been relegated to the Wiltshire Football League which is Step 11!). He was offered a contract by Steve Davis which he refused to sign. He's since refused to sign it under Artell and refused to sign it when we secured safety unlike Ben Garratt. Rumoured to be moving to a South West club, possibly Cheltenham or Swindon. We can easily upgrade on him so if he doesn't want to be here then he can leave.

Harry Davis - RELEASE: Loaned to St Mirren in January, his knee died and went on strike when Daddy was sacked. Artell isn't a fan of him, I'm certainly not a fan of him and he'll 110% be on this list. Should've left us a very long time ago and will struggle to find a professional contract (in England at least) with that abysmal injury record. Can see him staying in Scotland's lower leagues for good.

George Ray - KEEP: The greatest comeback since Lazarus himself. Almost moved to Cambridge in January but then Davis was sacked and Ray installed him back into the side where he's demonstrated resilience, leadership and a string of excellent performances now that lumbering pillock Harry Davis isn't next to him. Became Captain in February upon the injury of Danny Hollands and has sadly suffered a few minor injuries himself. He seems keen to stay and Dave Artell seems very keen to retain him, expect him to sign a new contract very soon.

Ben Nugent - RELEASE: A really nice lad and was first choice CB (because Harry was always injured) in our League One relegation season and had a decent partnership with Semi Ajayi who he had played with at Cardiff. Unfortunately, Harry Davis recovered from injury, Ajayi was sent back and Nugent and Harry together went to pot. Completely frozen out by Davis in League Two but given another chance by Artell. I really like the lad but he gives away too many needless fouls and will always cost you a goal a game. Therefore I'll release him but wish him the very best of luck in future.

Callum Saunders - RELEASE: Not got the same forward talents as his Dad. Absolute waste of a contract and has done nothing of note. Can't see him ever doing a job professionally because he doesn't take training and dieting seriously enough. Huge waster.

Dave Richards - RELEASE: No senior appearances and clearly can't challenge Ben Garratt for the starting job. No big loss.

Danny Hollands - KEEP: A player with sufficient experience, tactical discipline and great tackling ability is definitely needed at this club. If he can prove his fitness then we need to keep him, if he can't, then we need to find a sufficient replacement which will be extremely difficult but possible.

Billy Bingham - RELEASE: Done very well in an unnatural position of CB but he's a complete passenger in his natural position of CM. Yeah he might ping a nice ball to someone or try a 30 yard shot which will go miles wide to get the crowd excited, but he's a serial loser who can't put a tackle in because his legs are made of breadsticks and he can't win us games like an attack-minded CM should be doing. Release him and expect him to move back down South when he is. Can't believe some of our fans want to keep a player as mediocre as he is!

Perry Ng - Undecided: Has shown promise in CB to be a decent backup option for our defensive line, but not convinced he has the ability to be a regular starter. Wouldn't be a huge gain or loss either way so will let Artell decide on that one.

Andy Dawber - RELEASE: Signed from Altrincham as cover for our U23s as Richards got injured. Can't see him staying either.

Oliver Finney - RELEASE: Too injury prone and nowhere near the starting XI unlike Ainley who was signed at the same time.

Loanees returning:

Jordan Bowery - Undecided: Described by someone at Leyton Orient as "imperceptible", Bowery has been a revelation for us since his loan spell, assisting many goals and scoring a couple too. Despite not scoring many for a forward, his forward play has improved our lacklustre side to no end and I wouldn't say no to him coming back next season. Rumoured to have a relegation release clause in his Leyton Orient contract which means he could possibly walk away for nothing if so. Either way, he'll definitely be in League Two next season whether that's with or without us. I wouldn't mind us re-signing him but I could see us looking elsewhere due to the lack of goals scored.

Callum Cooke - Would love to KEEP but no chance: Cooke will play for Middlesbrough in the Championship next season and, if he doesn't, he'll almost certainly be playing for a Championship or League One club on loan. Far too good of a talent for League Two and I wish him all the best and a long and successful career.

Alex Kiwomya - Send him back to Chelsea for good: Despite announcing himself in the best way possible with two goal of the season contenders against Stevenage and Newport in August, Kiwomya has been a shadow of that player ever since. A few decent performances off the bench aside, he's a one-trick pony who can't last 90 minutes and his confidence looked shot to pieces during the latter stages of the Davis reign. It hasn't recovered since. Fully expect him to be loaned to another League Two club but it wouldn't surprise me at all if I saw a lower end League One club take a punt on him. Equally, it wouldn't surprise me if a Conference club loaned him either.

We haven't released anyone partly because we only started contract negotiations this week but mainly because we've only got 3 players contracted for next season - Artur Krysiak, Ryan Dickson, Omar Sowunmi.

Out of contract are: Nathan Smith, Alex Lacey, Kevin Dawson, Alex Lawless, Tom Eaves, Francois Zoko, Darren Ward, Bevis Mugabi, Matthew Dolan, Otis Khan, Jonny Maddison, Brandon Goodship, Joe Lea, Ollie Bassett, Tom James.

Poll by that kid on twitter rated Turton as most under rated player with Ainley. Paradox being, a single vote for Turton meant he was also our most over rated.

If all the above happens, including Bakayogo, Udoh and Kirk leaving, I will be extremely happy. Being Crewe though, we're bound to keep a few of the dregs leeching a career from the club.

It's a weird one with our release list.

It'll either be the nuclear option - Every single player on that out of contract list bar Ray to leave the club.

The semi-nuclear option that I mentioned with Ray, Ng, Hollands the three most likely staying. This is the route I reckon we'll go down.

Every fucker bar Saunders, Finney, Richards, Davis and Dawber getting offered a new deal which will have us in a relegation scrap in no time. That said Turton will more than likely go if the League One interest is true and Bingham would be likely to leave along with Guthrie too. Come to think of it, if we offered all bar the first five contracts, the only one I'd actually see wanting to sign on with us would be Ben Nugent and I'm confident we can upgrade on him if we released him anyway, so maybe whatever route we take, it won't be so bad...

(Course, it will be when Turton and Bingham are here for another two years which was unexpected all along)

Jesus with our 41 man usage this year this could take time!

Under Contract:

Nathan Smith - Currently mopping up all player of the year awards in his first season in the EFL... may be sold for big money if he's stays will be one of the top centre halves at this level. One bright star in a dark season for us.

Regino Cicilia - Cult Hero but mainly because he's so shit... which at times bamboozles opponents. May be better in league two.

Kjell Knops - one of our more positive foreign imports from last season sadly did his ACL so out until early next year. Real shame as decent.

Kiko - A rarity in league two a lad with name like so. Will be a mega culture shock going from Benfica Away to Barnet Away. Plenty of sexy tricks going forward but suspect in a 4-4-2 as not the best defensively.

Anthony De Frietas - Could be a real key player for us. Monaco youth player and ex France U20 has tons of potential and quality and able to get stuck in. A season in league two could be a stand out if can get fully fit. Raw but worth investing time in.

Paulo Tavares - Experienced top flight Portuguese midfielder has been alienated by Brown so may seek to move. Plenty of quality on the ball but struggled to adapt with the pace of the game over here. If he stays on the wages he is on hopefully will get a chance. Attitude seems ok as coaching youths whilst out the team. Incredible beard.

Chris Mbamba - signed form the Norwegian second division hasn't really featured. Suggests he's a dud but on decent money apparently.

Anton Forrester - started well, scored a couple but constantly injured and struggled. Injury hit career so need to look into issues.

Mutually terminated contracts:

Sebastian Amoros - seemed a decent prospect not rated by Brown.

Quentin Pereira - Didn't break into team.

Out of contacts/loan

Goalkeepers:

Ryan Boot - youth prospect KEEP

Leo Fasan Loan Expired

Deniz Mehmet RELEASE

Defenders

Adam Yates KEEP if fit decent league two right back

Ben Purkiss RELEASE struggled last season

Andre Bikey KEEP - absolute beast and would be class at this level. Probably create nuclear fusion in a battle with Bayo.

Remie Streete KEEP but will almost certainly leave. Will get us a bit of money at least

Ryan Taylor KEEP some won't agree but at 31 and his quality that clearly is there from his Prem days with a full pre season would be a useful player.

Scott Tanser RELEASE not done anything of note to suggest worth keeping the ex Dale man.

Midfielders

Chris Eagles - KEEP a quality player who helped give us a fighting chance. Finally seems to be recovering from personal tragedy under Brown and finding the quality he has struggled to show at Bury and Accy.

Sam Kelly - RELEASE not physical enough, rumours he's off to Shrewsbury. Didn't learn from signing McGivern and AJ i see.

Danny Pugh - UNDECIDED don't alright for us in that Grant role but knocking on a fair bit. Not sure but think Brown will keep him.

Sam Foley KEEP key player for us this season (and last) however expect he will stay in league one

Billy Reeves KEEP youth player who has had to play far more than he should but did well. Will surely stay and continue to develop. Maybe one who will benefit the league drop.

Jerome Thomas RELEASE great player but again constantly injured and question over his desire to get in the battle. Would be an asset if fit but never is.

Callum Guy - loan expired worth a look at getting again

Ryan Lloyd - youth been on loan at Chester and spent years it seems on loan. RELEASE

Gezhim Shalaj - RELEASE Swiss winger ex Dinamo Bucharest, barely used but looked ok in his cameos, tricky with a rocket of a shot but clearly not utilised for a reason. Expect will leave.

Forwards

Tyler Walker - loan expired injured since Feb. Maybe worth another go next season.

JJ Hooper - RELEASE awful lazy attitude, signed from non league Havant as a punt will likely go back there level wise and have only himself to blame.

Dan Turner - KEEP youth again who's carried our survival hopes after starting the season on loan at Kidsgrove. Potential clear but should never have been needed like he was. Will be good for us in time as with Reeves above.

Big rebuild to be done.

Delighted to see that, on the weekend that we released the last of our mad foreign imports, a team have been relegated to follow in our footsteps. May one of them have a cup of tea thrown at them during a live FA Cup first round humiliation.

Well few will likely be left come August. Amoros and Pereira have gone by choice, Knops is injured (but decent), Tavares and Mbamba probably won't feature under Brown and Shalaj will likely be released.

Kiko may stay and Cicilia.

One who really stands out De Freitas who actually seems to have something about him and the ability to play against hairy arsed league one/two midfielders. Keep him and il be chuffed.

Thankfully very little of Bruno's mess should remain and we can try and pretend it didn't happen!

You acquired Fraudel from us, didn't know England has been split as a nation into East and West... ;)

Ha, he's still a Frenchman. Not a bad player either actually, could be a decent pick up for someone.

Ours were generally of a higher caliber than yours appear to be (we had a Belgian international don't you know...) and they were all pretty useless, bless them.

His full debut for us against Gillingham in 2013 (albeit in League One) was one of the worst professional debuts I've ever seen a Crewe player have...

Barely played and when he did we were often very well beaten. Think Dele Alli bullied the shit out of him in his final appearance for us...

Tavares and Kiko were from Vitoria Setabul in Portugals top level (Tavares a regular) whereas the Dutch lads Cicilia and Knops played at a Eredivisie and the second tier.

The French lads were youngsters, De Freitas and Amoros from AS Monaco and Periera Stade Reims so very raw.

The best one had to be Mbamba though on a high wage signed from Norways second tier which I believe is about the level of Sunday League!

The season started well as we only played a couple in a team mainly of British experience but injuries meant we had to throw the youngsters in and it didn't go too well! Some of the most one sided games we've been in against us!

I think lower league English football might as well be a different sport. There were some lads over from Belgium who support KV Mechelen (sort of lower mid-table top flight) for our game with Hartlepool a few weeks ago, was having a chat with them and they couldn't believe how rudimentary it was. Just stuff like how 'keepers and defences never make any real attempt to play out under pressure.

We learned quite quickly that it doesn't matter how many Belgium caps you have or how many appearances you made for Feyenoord, it's basically impossible to jump into a totally different type of football unless you're very young. Suspect it'd work the other way too, mind - some players who are seen as promotion staples in England (Rob Jones, Neal Bishop - that sort) would likely be laughed out of other countries.

Very much agree. A couple of done alright, a Dutch centre half/left back and ADF who just seems to be picking it up and is pretty physically built.

Tavares is probably a good example of your point, he is the most high profile of the signings, stalwart at Setabul and turned down a new deal to come and play in the depths of the EFL. This guy was courted to Sunderland at one point and was playing at the likes of Benfica, Porto and Sporting away.

I don't doubt he is probably technically one of the best at the club at times at the start of the season we saw it at home when teams would be more open and he'd get the space and time to show it but once teams realised our weakness and basically got in our face he struggled with the pace often causing us massive issues and eventually fell out of favour and played about ten minutes under Brown. The level of style just caught him out and that's the main difference. Time on the ball. When we had our great start with some real decent results at home he was a key figure in that team (surrounded by Grant and Foley) but come Browns tenure we ended up playing a youth kid in Reeves ahead of him when injuries were at their worst.

Feel for some of them, not their fault they were offered the chance and certainly can't be scape goated but it will certainly go down as a calamitous event in our history and one relegation that was self inflicted considering we had a decent league one side that the chairman decided to dismantle in a suicidal gamble.

Seeing as all our players are expected to leave, mainly to clubs in this league I feel I should put one of these up:

Under Contract for next season and likely to stay as they're youngsters, all thrown in a the deep end this season:

GK: Sam Sargeant - 20 - Looks promising, would like to see him with a more experienced backline, good distribution and shot stopping. Looks a good prospect 100% keep.

RB: Myles Judd - 18 - Started slowly and needs to beef himself up a bit and is quite short, but is only 18 and has shown lots of promise. Needs to work on his one on one defending. Decent engine on him as well. Looks a good prospect. 100% keep.

AM: Steven Azalte - 18 - In 5 years I reckon someone else will benefit from his experiences here. Has excellent feet and skills. Needs to work on shooting and to bulk up a bit. But only 18 and looks a good prospect. 100% keep.

CM: Henry Ochieng - 18 - I like the look of him, box to box midfielder. Only played in the last month. Keep.

RW: Josh Koroma - 18 - Another one who in 5 years time, another club will probably have a half dent player on their hands. A few rumours he's already attracted a few clubs. Needs to work on his final ball and tracking back but has decent feet and skill.

ST: Sam Dalby - 17 - Youth striker and first year scholar thrown in at the deep end. Out of his depth but has shown some promise despite this. Would like to think in 5 years time this season will benefit him. Keep - He has promise, he may fulfill it with us in 2-3 years.

ST: Tristan Abrahams - 18 - Youth striker with alot of promise. Scored 2 already, would like to see him in a side with experience. 100% Keep.

Under Contract - But believed to have relegation release clauses and to be allowed to leave club for free because of this:

CB: Tom Parkes (Not 100% sure on him though) - Had an up and down season, looked good in places but woeful in other games.
CB: Teddy Mezeague - Joined from another club from the Belgium top flight, better than Yvan Erichot but has again struggled to cope with English game.
CB: Yvan Erichot - Joined from St.Truiden in Belgium, struggled to adapt to English game, had far too many poor games.
CM: Liam Kelly - Quality midfielder for this level.
RM: Gavin Massey - Quality winger for this level, lost alot of interest with us though when we had Alberto Cavasin in charge.
CM: Robbie Weir - (recovering from ACL injury) - He's been awful for us, some awful performances from him this season as our captin, he's been by far the biggest let down after his achievements with Burton Albion.
ST: Jordan Bowery - Spent the second half of the season on loan at Crewe, where he seems to have done well. He was awful for us though, another victim of our circus. He was banished for 5 weeks, he was brought back by Andy Edwards but his performances got worse for us as well as his confidence. Has another year left on his contract regardless.

Out of Contract and will 100% leave more than likely:
GK: Alex Cisask
- Sound enough keeper for this level, kept us in many, many games these past 3 seasons. Suspect on crosses at times, but most keepers at this level have weaknesses. Would be a good signing for anyone here.
GK: Charlie Grianger - Son of former LB Martin Grainger. He'll probably end up in the Conference or Conference South. Not quite good enough for me.
DR: Nicky Hunt: - I liked him, quite a steady player but his discipline is awful for a 33 year old - too many yellows for arguing with refs. Rumoured to be off to Notts County as player/coach with Kevin Nolan.
DL: Callum Kennedy - Can take a decent set piece and deliver some good crosses, but is limited on the ball and his one on one defending for us hasn't been that good.
ST: Paul McCallum - A decent poacher, but at times can appear lazy and not interested. The ball has to be played to him, he rarely chases it. For me the jury is still out on him. Will do a job at this level and nick goals, would like to see him at a stable club.
CM: Michael Collins - He's been really good for us, we're trying to keep him but will no doubt move back North.
CM: Sammy Moore - Came back from a good loan spell with Dover, but never found any form before injury ended his season in February. Not been good enough for us and will no doubt sign for Dover in the summer.
WL: Sandro Semedo - We've offered him a new deal, he has promise but his decision making isn't the best. Would be a good punt for anyone at this level, works very, very hard and has played in every game virtually for us this season - Mainly because we've had no one else, but overall he has been ok IMO.
DC: Michael Clark - Club have offered him a new deal, has shown promise as well as naivety. Worth keeping though IMO.
DC: Aron Pollock - Like Michael Clark above, shows the odd sign of promise but is very naive. Unsure on keeping him as he is older than Clark and we need more experienced players IMO.
DR: Jens Janse - Unfit ageing Dutchman, signed by our crap now departed head of recruitment who's been injured and banished by Becchetti for being shit. Which he has been for us.
WR: Ulrich Nmono - Another winger signed by our useless now departed head of recruitment but banished by Becchetti it seems, despite never being given too many chances. He did look poor though.
ST: Ollie Palmer - Will do a job at this level, good impact player IMO.
ST: Rowan Liburd - On loan from Stevenage and has been utter garbage for us, get rid and don't come back.
ST: Victor Adeboyejo - Young striker, scored one goal for us. I'd get rid of him, he's older than alot of our other youngsters and not as good. Struggles to hold the ball up. We've got better youngsters to keep IMO. Probably end up in the Conference South.

I expect half of these to still be in League Two next season.

I really liked the look of Collins in your midfield earlier this season. Reckon he'd fit in anywhere in this division.

We were sniffing around Michael Collins in December/January, but ended up signing Billy Knott instead.

Under contract for next season:
ST Dan Holman
CM Harry Pell
CM Carl Winchester
CB Will Boyle
CB Matt Bower
CM Josh Thomas

Expect Holman, Pell, Winchester and Boyle to be key members of the squad. Hopefully Holman can avoid injury this time around and find his form from two seasons ago. Thomas and Bower are youngsters who will likely be loaned out or used as cover.

Offered contracts:
ST Billy Waters - won most of the POTS awards, been better in the FL than he was at NL level. Be very pleased if he signs on.
ST Danny Wright - scored some important goals and always put in a shift. Be good to keep as cover.
CM Kyle Storer - spent a lot of the season suspended but was a key player when he did play.
LB Jordan Cranston - most of our fans don't rate him. Good going forward but a bit shaky at the back. Personally I don't think he's as bad as people say but definitely want some competition for him at LB.
CB Dan O'Shaughnessy - decent player with a hell of a long throw but again should be used only as cover in my view.
CB Aaron Downes - offered a player/coach role, really good guy to have around the club so glad he's (probably) staying.
GK Rhys Lovett - young keeper highly rated, will either be the backup or loaned out.
MF Adam Page - young lad who's spent a lot of time injured but has some promise.

Released:
CM Jack Munns - gutted to see him go, never got much of a look in this season after being superb in the NL. Whoever signs him has a heck of a player on their hands.
MF James Dayton - bags of ability but too often injured. Again if whoever signs him can keep him fit, he'll be a very good addition.
RB Jack Barthram - always thought he was a very solid player but didn't feature a lot this season. Shame to see him go.
GK Calum Kitscha - been the backup for two years, ironically injured for the one game he could've played away at Wycombe. Needs games and won't get them here.
RB Jordan Lymn - youngster who got a pro deal last summer and was loaned out several times.
CM James Rowe - really divided opinion amongst our fans. Personally thought he was decent but Winchester should be an improvement at CM.
LB Liam Davis - joined in January and gave a number of good performances but always got the impression he'd leave at the end of the season.
CB Dan Parslow, CM Asa Hall, & ST Amari Morgan-Smith - all out on loan at York since January and were never likely to stay after that.
LB James Jennings - signed in summer, played about three games then loaned out. Meh.

So we need a GK, two full-backs, at least one CB, CM, couple of wide players and at least one striker. Busy summer ahead.

Our official release list has come out.

RETAINED

George Ray
Jon Guthrie (99.9% sure he'll leave)
Ollie Turton (ffs why? 50:50 he'll stay)
Oli Finney
Perry Ng
Dave Richards (cheap option)
Danny Hollands (subject to fitness)

Released

Ben Nugent
Billy Bingham (going down South)
Andy Dawber
Callum Saunders
Marcus Poscha
Harry Davis (WE'RE A DAVIS FREE ZONE NOW!)

A few surprises on there. Will be very happy if Turton and Guthrie leave the club and all those offered contracts have until the 31st May to sign according to Dave Artell.

Let the big rebuild begin now we no longer have Harry Davis' obscene wages on the books!

Putting Ollie Turton testimonial plans in place.

No major surprises really. I wasn't sure if Turton would get a new deal and although Nugent can probably count himself a bit unfortunate, it would be ludicrous if we offered new contracts to every member of the worst defence in the country. Bingham is a classy and tidy footballer from what I've seen of him, but I'd like him to have been a bit more decisive - especially when he was part of a 2 man central midfield. Ultimately, we can't afford to have a senior player with such a patchy fitness record either.

Saunders is a real shame, a bit of a waste. Even taking in to account injuries and mismanagement, he's had 3 years to prove himself as a professional and hasn't even got close to doing so. It looks like he's only got himself to blame. I hope he does go on to have a good career but recent signs aren't particularly good.

We've got 3 senior players off the wage bill and there could be a couple more to follow (and one left in January, of course) so I do hope Artell will have a bit of room to rebuild now.

Cambridge have released:

David Gregory (GK)
James Dunne (CM)
Ben Williamson (ST)
Joe Pigott (ST)
Conor Newton (CM)
Dylan Williams (CM)

And transfer listed Mark Roberts (CB). Barry Corr is out of contract but is being kept on for the time being to continue working on his fitness, and a contract will either be offered or not depending on how that continues.

The Corr approach seems sensible for now but I'd still be hesitant about giving him a new deal. Roberts must've hit a trigger to extend his contract, but I'm pretty sure he'll find a route out. Dunne is a big disappointment but not a surprise, it's been coming since O'Neill signed in January. Gregory seems a bit odd, looked like a competent backup, not sure we'll get any better for what we're offering. Williams is a kid destined for the Southern League, and good riddance to the other 3.

Released.
Gary Thompson - A 36 year old donkey of a striker well pleased Ainsworth saw sense at last.
Sam Wood - Surprised by this thought he'd have got another year.

Retained.
Anthony Stewart - Fantastic news he's been superb at the heart of our defence this season.
Nick Freeman - Still learning but shows promise on the wing and deserved another year.

Offered new deals.
Arron Pierre - Really hope he accepts as he's formed a very good partnership with Stewart this season.
Marcus Bean - Not bothered if he goes as he's only played well in the last 4 games of the season.

Shame to see Green go, but ultimately he was no longer good enough for what we're looking for.

Farm him off to Lincoln with the rest of our rejects.

Either way, a club legend and will always get a generous round of applause from Mansfield fans, whoever he signs for (apart from Chesterfield, but they couldn't afford his wages anyway!)
