Best advice you can get. From a 13 year old.

I smoke, and currently have no plans to stop, but eventually I'm going to get financially squeezed out of it.

Smoke rollies, Salsa is wonderful for a budget tobacco, Ashford Gold is decent too. I've had to have bloody Gold Leaf today though as Morrison's had none of either, the bastards.

Tbh Jase, the wife and I have a very decent standard of living but to continue doing what I do now...having a drink, having my bets I really couldn't afford to fork out £8 odd for a twenty pack of Silk Cut every day (£240 each month ffs)....Nup, no way.

I voted for it, so I certainly hope that ain't the reason.

Fair enough, I only put down £14-16 every week and half or so, 50g lasts me and the missus that long easily, often longer, this is why I've been able to afford it for so long still.

Yeah I don't know how actual cigarette smokers actually justify the cost to themselves. Obscene amount of money on something that's going to increase your chances of dying prematurely.

If they can afford to buy them they don't have to justify it to anyone.

That is actually incorrect, Japanese people are in top 5% for smokers per capita yet they have the highest life expectancy.

Its about lifestyle and diet.

EDIT: I would not promote smoking and i am trying to quit myself.

Started smoking in my early 20s. Not much, around 10-15 a day, and sometimes less. Gave up ten years ago this coming new year, and don't miss them. Nor do I miss smelling like a stale ashtray in the mornings or spending a hundred quid a month. It's only really when you've stopped smoking that you appreciate how revolting smokers can smell.

".......Previous studies of the effects of smoking in Japan had been mainly of individuals born in the first few decades of the twentieth century who probably didn't start to smoke until well into adult life and smoked only a few cigarettes per day. This explains why the risks of smoking seemed low. Nowadays, however, young Japanese smokers tend to smoke more cigarettes per day and to start at a younger age, so their risks will be higher.

In addition to studying the risk of smoking, the researchers were able to examine the benefits of stopping. As elsewhere, those who stopped smoking before age 35 avoided almost all the excess risk among continuing smokers, and even those who stopped around age 40 avoided most of it.

The researchers conclude that the future health risks to young smokers are likely to be just as big in Japan as in other countries although much of the risk can be avoided by stopping."

I started down the slippery slope with a pint and a Castella at 10p each (actually a shilling or less) as a misguided attempt to look cool.

Moved on to cigs when working shift work in a bog roll factory pre-uni. - opportunity for a break was to go out for a ciggy and a chat.

Hit my peak when working in Eastern Europe, where most seemed to chain smoke (mostly rubbish local Marlboro or Kent). I'd given up and re-started dozens of times but eventually (thankfully) stopped and stayed off when I was around 35. I did it by moving on to Park Drive (strong and untipped) just after I'd had a cold. Took all the pleasure out of it and put me off long enough not to be tempted back over the dodgy period. Weaning off had never worked and being in a pub or bar in the good old smoky days was the usual time to weaken. I've cadged the odd one since then but the impact on my taste buds and wallet have kept me strong.

I'm amazed how many cooks and chefs (who I assume like their food and wine) blunt their taste buds with smoking - although I recognise and can relate to the joys of popping outside for some fresh air........ and a ciggy.

The people who piss me off are the militant non-smokers who can't be near anyone who is smoking without tutting or some other such shit. The funny thing is, they're normally people who used to smoke. As long as it's done in an appropriate location (ie outside, a private abode or a designated area) and is away from children, if someone wants to pay good money to lessen their life expectancy and stink of stale fags then that's their own business.

Not long after the smoking ban came in me and a couple of mates were sitting in the garden of The King Arthur pub in Glastonbury when a family decided to sit on the next table, when they're meals arrived the father told not asked us to stop smoking. We were sitting there long before he arrived and could have eaten inside where we couldn't legally smoke, with his attitude my reply was not what he expected :sna:

I had that when I was smoking. It was a busy beer garden with nowhere else to sit, but loads of room inside. We just said, look you can literally sit anywhere you like and eat that, there's some lovely tables inside but you chose to sit in the only place I can fucking smoke, do one...

Alternatively, in the summer a pub garden is a lovely place to be. What ruins it a little is my smoking friends not being conscious of the fact they were just covering me in smoke. A little bit of thought either way and it's all fine.

My only real beef with smokers are the c***s that do it near kids, especially in cars (which is now rightly illegal I believe), and especially their own kids who most of the time will have no option but to suck it up, literally.

In my restaurant we have a nice terrace which is non smoking. It's got heaters and a nice view. We then have an area for smokers by the bins.
