Hello people of 1FF,

My name is Alex Macdougall, and I am a sociology student who is interested in why people voted leave and remain in the referendum last year. So far, I have been out on the streets of Greater Manchester asking people about the issues that are important to them, but I thought it would be a good idea to share it on politically-engaged forums such as this one too. Whether you voted Leave or Remain, this is your chance to voice your opinions about everything Brexit!

If you think it sounds interesting, the link below takes you to a 10 minute survey where you can express yourself on issues related to Brexit. At the end, there is a space where you are free to write as much as you like about your thoughts on anything to do with the referendum and the UK leaving the EU.

https://uvacommscience.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_881tzZDkMMN6GVL

I am very interested in what you have to say, and would be very grateful to both leavers and remainers for your help if you can spare 10 minutes.

Thanks a lot, and best wishes,
Alex

All I would say is there's quite a lot of identifiable info you're asked to give up in there. Your age, gender and place of residence, salary and later even your initials.

If our OP Alex would like to stick around, perhaps contribute to our ongoing Brexit referendum thread, I'm sure that'd be welcome.

Hi smat,
The idea with that section that you flagged up is to give strong statement like your screenshot shows. It is then up to the participant to say whether they fully agree with it, fully disagree with it, or agree/disagree to some extent. Many thanks for your help with my project, smat!

Thanks for your feedback Mark, and i understand that some information might be personal to some. People who are interested in taking part might like to read the first page of the survey thoroughly, as this explains the purpose of the survey and what kind of information will be asked for. If anyone has any further questions for me i am happy to answer them here. It is also worth noting that people are free to put the general area that they live in, not their address. Also, all answers are anonymous and kept completely confidential, and those who do take part are free to contact me to take their answers out of the survey if they so choose (contact information is available at the end of the survey).

And that's a cracking idea about the referendum thread! I will make my way over there now to see whats going on.

Thanks again for the interest, and the pointers.

Alex

People who voted leave are all
RACISTS

People who voted remain are all TERRORIST SYMPATHISERS.

Generalisation at its best.

What exactly is "my group".

I'm the son of a working class immigrant and middle class Brit, I grew up in a household earning below the arbitrary poverty line, dropped out of sixth form, went on to re-do A Levels, gained undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications and now earn above the national average.

If there's an option for people who laugh at crying children I'd tick that one pal

Hi LOTAL,

That question was left as general as possible so that everyone has the chance to answer it according to their own circumstances. Admittedly, it was one of the more difficult ones to word because of this, and therefore perhaps one of the more difficult ones to answer. What you describe is also shows an inherrent problem with surveys, as they dont allow for nuances to be communicated, like what you have described about your own life. My advice is to answer this according to your life now, and think of whichever 'group' you feel part (which may be friends, colleagues, etc).

Please take my apologies for this difficulty. And thanks very much for the feedback! It is very useful for making me a better researcher.

I also left raised Catholic off of my list!

Identity is a funny thing. I can honestly say I don't really class myself in any group (although I have answered the question), the best friends I grew up with (estate agent, recruitment agent, cameraman - all incidentally hold second passports) are probably the most relatable but then beyond school and the fact I've known them for 16-25 years we don't really have the same backgrounds. Work colleagues absolutely not, the most identifiable are from when I worked in a supermarket and even then, the only ones I'm still in regular contact with are a banker (boooo) and a failed actor.

I'm comfortable and have friends who earn minimal with no education of note but on the flipside a good friend of mine has a masters and her family own a fucking yacht moored in France (mind you, the richer people from my #clique on my masters course I quickly lost contact with).

I'm just me.

(Enough thread hijacking on my own random tangent).

It is indeed! Many thanks for your response even though that challenging question was in there.

Cheers for your all your opinions on here and on the survey everyone.

I am still particularly keen to hear from those of you who voted LEAVE on the survey, as I have heard from many more Remain voters so far. If you voted Leave, and have 10mins spare then please have a go at the survey and leave your thoughts at the end.

Many thanks!

Generalising here, but I'd guess the majority of remainers did so because they thought leaving could cost them a few quid - in effect, a selfish reason.

I voted out because I honestly believe it will be in the country's long term interest.

Surely, nobody can say they actually believe in the European ideal. The entire thing will fall to bits eventually, Brexit or not.

Nothing to do with being noble, it's about voting for something you actually believe in as against the 'what's in it for me' reason.

Some openly want an United States of Europe model, as it would go a long way by setting a common working wage EU wide, distributing wealth to the east and therefore eradicating Eastern Europeans undercutting wages in a race to the bottom. But for that to happen there will be winners and losers as it would mean budgets being set by Brussels and national governments taking a degraded role (looking after public services etc, managing budgets issued to them by the EU in the same way as local councils work), with a two tier income tax system.
The EU would set a budget for each nation state dependant on each States needs out of the EU pot.

That model would suit some people and not others but a half way house approach as of now does not work.

If those remaining in the EU want to plough on, then scrapping membership fee' s and introducing an EU tax system and centralising budgets and wages etc for Eurozone members (including forcing those non Eurozone members to take the Euro) may make the EU as a whole stronger and more efficient.

But how many would vote for it?

I voted remain because I was scare mongered into it and even though leave won I still feel ashamed for voting remain and also voting for labour in the last election, the thought of voting for someone like Ed Milliband gives me shudders.

Thankfully since then I have wised up and I now see how things really work after discovering anti-establishment news sites and of course JohhnyTodd!!

If it was not for JohnnyTodd's winning of me then I would probably be a far left communist by now.

Hi Pilgrim Meister,
This is an interesting concept and one I haven't heard of before. Do you by any chance have a link you could send me to the article you read it in?

Hi mysteriouscurle,
This back story is very interesting indeed - especially the fact that you changed you mind about your vote as time has gone on. This is exactly the kind of thing that im interested in for my survey. If you do have a spare 10 minutes, it would be great to get your opinions! Here's the link again if you fancy filling it in:
