As long as I've been watching Crawley we have always had other clubs regard us as one they should be beating. From my early days it was teams such as Dartford and Gravesend (now Ebbsfleet) to later with teams like RS Southampton and Fisher Athletic and the Conference days with every one except Leigh RMI. Now it's just everyone.

Most of the time I agree (how the hell are we in the same league as Pompey?) but I'm not going to apologise for supporting my club and if you say it in an arrogant manner I will take the pee unmercifully.

We too have been turned over by Braintree but their fans said they should be beating the likes of us!

You obviously weren't supporting Donny in the 90s!
I haven't noticed Donny having any sort of top-flight history either.

if they were nearer to the top of the league,rather than where they are now,would it be different?
you know due to their circumstances that they will up their game and fight for everything and maybe,like our fans, your lot might under-estimate the situation?

Yes definitely, solely due to their league position. It's a funny game, and Pompey are naff at home and are rubbish against relegation teams.. also Newport have beat Pompey the last 3 times at Fratton Park. However.. I still think Pompey should be beating a team struggling in relegation.

This thread reminds me of when we were playing Middlesbrough and Brian Robson was managing them, think it was 94/95 season and he said before the game 'If we're serious about promotion then we need to be beating the likes of Grimsby'.
Buckley pinned the article on our dressing room wall as part of his team talk and before Boro had time to fart we were 2-0 up after 5 minutes.
Ended 2-1 and it felt terrific.

I don't think this saying is disrespectful in any way. It's a given that all sides are in the same division for a reason but there's more to it because, for a start, this usually refers to your opponents league placing. If a side is in danger of going down, I can certainly understand why their fans will look at fixtures against the other struggling sides and say we should be beating them if we want to stay up, only because they don't expect to take anything from their matches against the stronger sides who are all gunning for promotion.

Likewise with the top sides as while beating their fellow challengers is great, it will be all for nowt if they have a habit of dropping points to much inferior sides. if I were say a Pompey fan, then I'd also say we should be beating the likes of Morecambe and Crawley, only because those sides are currently in a safe lower mid table place so it's not like they're fighting for their lives.

I know that Doncaster used to self-depreciatingly refer to themselves as 'the likes of Doncaster' or just 'TLO Doncaster' on their forum, based on their time in the Championship, where they were the club others thought they should beat the likes of.
