I know this might seem bizarre, but when I started loving football, I went to my local teams games and since then I've supported them ever since

no picking out of a hat, no looking who is the best 400 miles away team to pretend to like, just my local team

BIZARRE

Initally I was a Burnley fan up until the age of about 12 (mainly because it was the most local team for me, and most friends supported them). My parents bought me season tickets for a few years in the Jimmy Mac stand.

After a while my dad took me to watch his own team, Wolves, and the rest is history. I still look out for Burnley and view them as a second team, so to speak, but nothing is the same for me as watching Wolves. Also have a soft spot for Aston Villa/Cov (again mainly because nearly everyone where I currently live is a Villa or Coventry fan) and sometimes attend their matches if Wolves are away or something.

Despite my screen name I am in fact a born and raised Londoner (Greenwich) and I started supporting Charlton Athletic because of my nephew. I had never really followed football before because I come from a rugby family - my father played back row for Blackheath in the amateur era - but when we were in London in the summer of 2006 my sister couldn't take my nephew to a match they had tickets for so I stepped in and went with him. Charlton vs Man Utd at the Valley. We lost 0 - 3.

I started to become interested in the game and when I spoke to my sister on the phone after that (I was living in Kernow by that time) I'd speak to my nephew and ask about his school football, etc and I became quite the Charlton fan.

This was the season the 'addicks were relegated from the Premier League and the decline began, a situation which I later found out was, apparently, all my fault, as when we visited family that Christmas and I asked my nephew if there was a match at the Valley over the holiday we might go to together he asked me not to go with him.

I asked him why and he replied "Ever since you've been a Charlton supporter we keep losing. Auntie Jenny, you're a jinx."

With the way things have turned out over recent years, I reckon he might just be right. :conf:

My local team.4 miles away. Go on the bus- easy to get to.cheap to get in.
Even when we where non league it was still the only option as I never wanted to support the big clubs in the West Midlands or derby up the road.
And it's paid off lately - last 3 years have been fairy tale stuff.

Went to Charlton, Millwall and even Palace, but West Ham had Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Clyde Best and was then the academy of football. Need I say more?

I think I first went to an Argyle game in about 1994 when visiting the city, and quite frankly I found the quality of football awful. Even when we later moved to Plymouth I was still a bit semi-detached going to only three or four games a year most seasons. It has been taking my kids that has turned my blood green. If I am away from home I now look for the Argyle result first.

.

They had Billy Bonds too. And that's where clubs like Charlton are always at a disadvantage, the promising youngsters can be tempted away by clubs like West Ham (as well as others). They poached Bonds away from the Valley for tuppence and down the years they've done the same with players like Shaun Newton, Diego Poyet, Jermaine Defoe and even.... if you want to go back far enough... Malcolm Allison...!!

It sticks in the throat of some Charlton fans when we hear West Ham supporters calling Billy Bonds a "one club man". Sure he played almost all of his career at Upton Park, but he wasn't "one club" and he sure as heck wasn't one of their own. I think that point is worth making.

I don't know about Plymouth but in many cases, If you find the quality of football awful at any given lower league club, simply look at the players they've raised through their youth systems that have been lured away by bigger clubs.

When I was little my dad used to take me to City one week and my uncle used to take me to r*vers then next so it was left up to me to chose.
After a season of doing both, City were promoted to the old Division 1 and it's been City all the way since. I've followed them to the top division and to the bottom one and I'll never change, nor would I want to.
I have had a soft spot for Spurs ever since they stuffed the gas 9 nil in the 70's and worked for HP when they were their sponsors so watched a fair few of their games.
The only other club I'm really interested in is Borussia Dortmund. A few of us went to Germany 2006 and bumped into a load of Germans on a train from Munich to Gelsenkirchen. They were all BvB supporters and turned out to be a great bunch, sorting us match tickets for the WC quarter final, free travel and a place to stay. We've stayed in touch over the years and travel to each others club 2 or 3 times a season. All I will say is that the TV does NOT do the WFS justice, not even close. We usually try and organise our weekends in Germany to catch a St Pauli game as well so I suppose I should add them.

You have reminded me of a Charlton story. I assume you remember Theo Foley, he used to take my year for football practice every week at Avery Hill for one school year. Presumably then the salary of a lower league manager was not that much, and he supplemented his earnings as effectively a part-time games teacher.

I'm afraid Theo Foley was before I was born by about 15 years, but I'm aware of the story. I believe former goalkeeper Charlie Wright did the same thing. My uncle used to go to his football training sessions at Bloomfield School in Plumstead.

Apparently, Charlie was a bit of a colourful character. He would climb up and sit on his crossbar when the play was down the other end and he got bored. On a number of occasions he was known to go behind the goal and chat with fans and wasn't above cadging fags from fans at the same time. I can't imagine such things happening today. His major claim to fame though was that when he was doing his national service in Hong Kong, he played in a world cup qualifier for Hong Kong and saved a penalty during the game. The match finished goalless and he was made Hong Kong Footballer of the Year..!!

I can't find any direct links to the occurrence but there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of this: http://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/65197/a-great-goalkeeper-of-yesteryear-charlie-wright

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the Charlton legend that is Charlie Wright

Dortmund is ok, Ciderup. But, just admit it, Aber gas made you do it to follow St.Pauli.
What was "the bribe"? A "free kick" at the Reeperbahn? :D

The Reeperbahn has it's 'attractions' I will admit as has Herbertstrasse. ;)
St Pauli are certainly something different and a day in Hamburg is a decent one. Beers in the English bar down the road or the nearby HSV pub followed by a dirty great steak make for a good day. :hypo:

My girlfriend had to drag me to my first football game. I had never given the sport any thought, only really being interested in the NFL.

That game changed my life. The chants, the atmosphere, the beautiful game played before me. It was exhilarating. I've only been a supporter for two years but I can't turn back. Football has become a major part of my life. I can't imagine it any differently.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to a very entertaining first game. I've seen some very dull games so I can understand why people are turned away if their only exposure is a 0-0 draw.

I love my club. SKCTID

I wonder how the US matches compare to European games? The impression we get over the pond is that your match day (with all possible respect) is a little 'manufactured' whereas ours can be quite volatile. The next time I'm in the US, I will have a catch a game I reckon. I usually go to Chicago or Mountain view in San Francisco for work so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Can only happen in the U.S that a man has to be dragged into his first football game by his girlfriend :D (kudos to you that you don't say "soccer" ;)

Seeing that you like Borussia Dortmund, so if you're already flashed by the atmosphere of an US Football match come to Dortmund, be one of the 81.000, especially when standing right amongst those in the Yellow Wall, and you'll hail the football even more ;)

Yeah, in football you won't be awarded with 3 points for kicking the ball miles over the goalposts :D. And a goal only counts for 1 not 6. Ah, and this guy between the goalposts also spoils the party (if he's good and not English /i)

Good to hear. Stay away from "false" football (which is mainly played with the hands) ;)

Dirk, Sporting Kansas City 'Til I Die maybe?

Let's hope then that "the franchise" won't be relocated elsewhere. ;).

I am really not familiar with the MLS: Do they have the normal european relegation/promotion system or is this a closed league like the other major leagues in the U.S where you can only join if they "expand"?

The latter. They also have the weird draft system that other American sports have. Try the MLS on FM if you want to know what the hell is going on is my advice... I got confused and gave up, but many learn that way.

Here's a fun fact for you: in the French 4th division, CFA (which stands for Championnat de France Amateur before you ask!), a win gets you 4 points, a draw 2 points and you gain a point for losing! Fancy that!

I went to an MLS game back in 2014 although not in the US. The MLS also have the decency of "inviting" Canadian clubs Montreal Impact and Toronto. Went to Montreal vs Portland Timbers. Was alright.

They wanted to implement that in France.

why should I ask?

I was refering to 3 points for a Field Goal (a kick "miles above" the goalposts) and 6 points for a touchdown, not about the points you get for a win. No wonder that American Football has higher scores.

They wanted to implement that in France.

And why didn't they implement it? This system has no tradition in Europe. In German Icehockey we implemented this system once, the same as in the NHL. Big fault.

Yeah, I'm lucky she brought me!

We really want to go to a dortmund game. It would be an amazing experience, though I wouldn't want that all the time. I know people substitute 'intimate' with 'small' but I really do enjoy that close-to-the-pitch feel with 19,000 other people. I've been to NFL games and don't really feel like a community when there's 70,000 other people there.

That's one of the things people in the states have a hard problem with! They only look at points on the board as opposed to chances created and amazing saves. Sure there are dull 0-0 draws, but some of those games are also the most excited because of the amazing passing and tactics used and reflex saves made.

And it's Sporting Kansas City Till I Die!
