In the lower leagues the price to sponsor a player on a match day isn't a great deal and could be easily "crowdfunded." It'd do the site good to have a new icon and if it managed to pick out a likely performer it could bring some exposure to the forum with match going fans. Using the knowledge of the 1ff scouting network submit a shortlist of likely performers and put it to a secret ballot for those who would donate to the cause. Accrington Stanley for example charge £200 for the season, interest allowing that's not a great figure to raise.

The money just goes to the club the player plays for. Normally in return the fan gets there name in the program/big screen or read out and sometimes that players kit at the end of the season (Might not do that anymore)

I once brought my mum a sponsorship package for her birthday, she chose John McCombe. Back then you used to get your name in the program, signed shirt and photo with the player and there was a meal at the end of the season with the players. These days you pay more for it and get less for it, certainly no meal.
