So. Why do you support your club? Long term genetic roots - I.E. Your Father, Grand father did? Your local team?
I know someone who is from Liverpool but changed allegience to Blackburn Rovers when they won the title. Can't go back to supporting Liverpool, won't support Rovers because of where they are.
I know a Burnley fan who did likewise. Now it's a bit awkward for them as they daren't show their face near Turf Moor.
Are you a staunch fan, who no matter what; stands by his/her side?! Football is global these days. So maybe you picked a team who are successful or fancy an underdog.
My neighbour is from Birkenhead, claims to follow Tranmere Rovers but seems to only get giddy about Liverpool.
I'm curious what made you pick your team. Or did the team pick you?

Not a judegmental post but it seems there are a fair few people who switch sides as easily as bank accounts.
Would you follow your team if they suddenly went on a disasterous run and ended up dropping down the divisions?

In my thread http://www.onefootballforum.co.uk/index.php?threads/your-very-first-match-live.14008/ I already explained my first "contact" to the HSV in 1969, aged 6.
My father was a life long HSV supporter, he started as a young kid too in the 1930's (when the HSV was already shite again after winning some German Championships in the 1920's)

In the 80's when studying at the Technical University Carolo Wilhelmina in Braunschweig I started to watch the matches of Eintracht Braunschweig at the weekend (because as a poor student I couldn't afford to visit Hamburg every week)

These are the only 2 clubs I really support (which is for me watching matches live at the stadium not only at TV).

My wife is from Dortmund and her sister works for the main sponsor of the Borussia, so we can catch match tickets for occasional Borussia games (like the Europa League match against Liverpool)

In the Mid 80's I came the first time to Wolverhampton, visiting my cousin who is married with an english soldier. He served in Germany where they met and later she went with him to Wolverhampton. Here I watched the Wolves for the first time (they were a third Division (League One now) team back then and the next year even a fourth Division team. In over 30 year I've watched the Wolves now in every Division and even in the Premier League. I like the club very much. I try to watch at least 1 match every year at Molineux when I visit my cousin and her man.

And then there is Liverpool: I like the Reds since the 70's after they let Kevin Keegan move to the HSV. The mighty mouse made an immediate impact here and changed the views of english football here in Germany. He's now a HSV Legend as well as a Reds Legend. And again: Liking the club is not supporting !!!! Big difference.

Summary:

Supporter:
  • HSV : Born and bred in Hamburg.Since 1969, through my dad at the age of 6. Nowadays season ticket holder
  • Eintracht Braunschweig: Since 1983 due to studying at the TU (only occasional visits at the stadium at the Hamburger Straße nowadays (pure coincidence the street name ;) )
Sympathies for:
  • Wolves: Since 1986 (visiting my cousin at Wolverhampton)
  • Borussia Dortmund: Wife's born there and it's her favourite club
  • Liverpool: since the Mid70's, Kevin Keegan
Hope I've answered your question which club I support and which ones I like!

Good fucking question. One I ask myself most Saturday evenings.

Boring answer but probably a popular one, my Dad and local.

When I was at High School back in the 70's, it was expected that you had a team. Now I enjoyed watching football on the telly but I had no influence behind me - my dad used to go to watch Chelsea but he stopped when he married my mum. I chose QPR because they were localish and successful. I think I went to Loftus Road twice - girls didn't go to football on their own.

Move on a few years and I was living close to Plough Lane and Wimbledon were having an amazing run in the cup and weren't doing badly in the league. I realised that my little local team had chosen me, just as I had chosen QPR over a decade before.

I've supported a team called Wimbledon through the highs and incredible lows for 29 years and am looking forward to them moving back to Plough Lane in 3 or so years. Sadly I no longer live just round the corner but it's closer to me than the current ground.

Other teams? I have a soft spot for Sutton Utd and that hasn't diminished after they beat us in the cup although I was disappointed.

Altrincham
My dad hated football, so I had to find my own way. I tried my local team (Stockport County) for three or four games, but found the atmosphere intimidating and they weren't very good (84/85). I had a school mate who suggested Altrincham, and as I could get a bus from near my house to the ground, I went along, and that was kind of that. After I stopped going to Altrincham, I went to a few County games with colleagues and mates (the Bergara years), but it still didn't do it for me.

I've lost a lot of interest in following Altrincham over the past 12 months, and I wonder how long it will take to get it back. I wouldn't be able to switch teams though, it would be weird.

I just decided one day, probably influenced by mates at school.
I've got no family connection to the club whatsoever.

The school i went to in a suburb called Pitsmoor was fairly evenly divided between Blades and Owls, possibly slightly more Blades fans

Interesting feedback. Cheers.

I know you mentioned your first game Dirk in another thread but that wasn't necessarily the team you follow.
By all rights I should be a Blackburn Rovers fan as we spent a good number of years living there and in nearby Accrington in a school where the majority supported them.

Your club is part of your overall identity. You sort of measure people by who they support.

I understand the identity but not sure I measure people against who they support. Maybe people get preconceptions of other fans and their clubs. I am, however; curious what drives people to support a club. Especially in an area where the catchment area is shared, such as United and Wednesday as a perfect example.

I have always been an avid follower of non league football. One day I decided to search for local clubs in my area and at the time (2008) Alfreton had just qualifed for the Conference North play offs for the second succesful season and were the best team in the area. After that I began to follow them closely before taking the plunge and attending my first game in 2010. Been ever since.

Fair play DarkSith. I used to get on as many Accrington Stanley games as possible when they were non-league as I lived there back between 1981-88 and my lot were away. Still have a soft spot for them but thoroughly enjoy the thought of a fan enjoying their local team regardless of level.

Because the other choices are Palace or Millwall, easy choice really!

In all seriousness though, my grandad was a Millwall fan and used to take my Dad, my Dad was unable to see so he and kids of similar age used to sit on a wall but stewards were always getting them down. Bored of not being able to see my dad whinged so my Grandad took him down to Charlton which he then much preferred.

Even now, I say a little thank you for that wall being there every night before bed.

Likewise. I often say a little thanks to my Dad. Could have ended up supporting them down the road but he persevered. That's a lovely story as to how you ended up being a Charlton fan Bobbin. Fair play to you for sticking by the club too through what have been tough times mate.

Ah, we've all been through tough times at one time or another mate.

We were a bottom half second division side when I started going so we've been fairly average/crap the majority of my time supporting. I've been fortunate enough to see my club punch above their weight and hold their own in the premier league for 8 years and got to enjoy the greatest play-off game ever played at Wembley.

I love my fiancé but Charlton will always be my first love and I can honestly say I've never once been tempted to stray or leave. I'm not currently going to home games in protest against the current owners but still doing most aways, once they're gone I'll be getting my season ticket back.

I'll wager that people might measure you by being a supporter of a club that wouldn't allow players of a certain background to play for them until about 20 years ago. Supporters who sing sectarian songs, give a fascist salute and are notorious troublecausers e.g. Manchester several, years ago.

I'll bet you're not even from Glasgow

If I lived in London I would support Charlton. I was friends with a Charlton fan during the days when you shared Selhurst with Palace. In the 1960's i used to wear a Charlton lapel badge. The Blades were always my club though

It was the nearest club to where we lived (Manor Park) so either walked or took the bus at the end of the road.

I don't think that's necessary Blade. You are tarring everyone with same brush and that just isn't fair on the vast majority of fans of any club!

But we're not talking about other people are we? We're talking about me. Anyway what has me as a person to do with what team I support? Only a fucking moron would judge anybody by that standard...honest to fuck. If you want to get into a slanging match about what supporters sing let's do it son and are you trying to tell me there are no fucking knobheads that follow your team...get real!

And yes, you'd win your bet for what it's worth....I'm not from Glasgow...and your point is? This is one bug bear of mine that I will argue until the sun goes down so if you have the time fucking go for it!! You do NOT have to reside in the area where your team of choice plays. As I said I'll argue all day if you want on that point. Carry on!

All this because I said I don't judge ANYBODY by the team they support....fucking laughable......
