Martinez would probably do well for Southampton in his first season, allowing a previously defensive side more freedom to attack. But as the years go by he would neglect defensive and fitness coaching and turn Southampton into a mess. He's also sign James McCarthy immediately

He's not shit. He's done ok in all of his jobs, he's a safe bet if a very underwhelming one.

Unlucky with the League Cup but negative as fuck football at home has got him the sack and rightfully so. It was clear as day that the players didn't want to play for him.

17 goals in the league at home.
We played for a point against so many teams last season. St. Mary's was a fucking fortress under Koeman - Puel's negative tactics ruined that.
Shite team selections and negative football seeing us knocked out of an easy Europa League group. We played for a 0-0 draw at home to Hapoel Be'er Sheva - a team who got smashed when they went to Celtic Park earlier in the season.
His rotation policy - Have a good game? Score a goal? On the bench next game.

We only finished 8th because the teams below us were poor. We finished closer to the relegation zone than we did to 7th place.

Going to St. Mary's felt like a fucking chore under him.
Thank you for a very insightful and quite revealing post. This pretty much explains the sacking and avoids me going in a rant which could have gone along the lines of "how can you sack a manager that was seconds away from getting you a trophy? Who do you think you are?"
What you say about Puel's brand of football doesn't surprise me one bit. He can produce wonderful football when he feels the players are good enough to be all out attack (like at Nice in 2016/17) but he certainly isn't the kind to give youth the confidence it needs to go out and play their own games. He is French so he will prioritize a boring 0-0 draw over an epic 3-4 loss. You will never be able to change that.

He's been linked to Saint-Etienne who have just parted ways with their manager. His future should be in France (not that anyone cares).

Then we have a disagreement. In terms of top flight football he's a shit, severely limited manager. I've never rated him, and said from day one that he'd flop at Everton. Which he did. The same will happen at Southampton, they need to avoid and I suspect they will.

Isn't he doing ok with Belgium, or has he been punted from them also?

No he's doing alright, Martinez isn't a bad manager, that's vastly under rating him, he simply isn't a brilliant one either. Terrible managers get teams relegated who shouldn't be anywhere near it, that isn't Martinez. He's a short term boost who will do well initially, which is why imo he doesn't suit Southampton, they've had far too much constant turn over of players and managers and need some stability and a long term strategy beyond selling any asset that moves and losing managers.

Martinez will always be a poor manager unless he changes his ways and stops being stubborn about the wrong things. He made Everton progressively worse and towards the end of his time here was some of the worst football I've ever seen

Don't worry, it's Pellegrino. (Judging from the media.)

Reckon they were going for Pellegrini this entire time.

Well this should be another interesting appointment.

Any insight from the Liverpool fans? Looking at you Bill.

Well he was great for us for 10 games.

I guess he should be a good switch, he's done well with Alaves even though their past season has more than one similarity to yours.

I was asking more for his coaching history with Rafa, rather than his playing career. ;)

Eh he was assistant for a short while. I don't know, he was there for two years, one good year and one horrible. I have no idea what he did or what his purpose was. Kind of hard to judge an assistant manager to be fair.

Well, I can tell you Eric Black is complete shit and hopefully Pellegrino gets his own coaching staff. Bring Sammy Lee back on board.

I’d written Puel off like most but it’s increasingly looking like the problem is Southampton’s extremely average squad rather than Puel.
