I've got 3 ISB albums Steven - Hangman, 5000 Layers and On Air (a comp of BBC/radio sessions iirc). TBH, I only got 'em as I had read in some mag or other that ISB were one's of Robert Smith's favourites. Musically good enough but I reckon that the vocals let them down. One of those artists I file under 'acquired taste', so that perhaps in time I'll be lucky enough to appreciate them more. But having said that, still a million miles better than LOTAL's offerings to this thread.

Anyway, here's my choice for today.

Hangman is probably my favourite one but I love most of the stuff they did before they went all Scientology - even some of the stuff they did after that period was good, if a little softer/straighter than they previously were known for...

Don't take this the wrong way mate, but that's a pretty common thing in music. Loads of bands have got just the one guy that writes all the music and in some cases pens the lyrics too, but he or she aren't always credited for it. Usually it all's down to whatever the band agreed on when they first started out, and generally it's only because of royalties that you see all the band members credited for song writing on several records.

What I mean to say is this - a guitarist may come up with a riff and has a pretty good idea on the drum beat and the bass line that should accompany his riff. He plays it to the rest of the band, and the drummer may add a couple of drum rolls here and there, but it's still the guitarist's song right?

Apologies if I misunderstood your comment!

Anyways, I'm hearing the tune right now and since you're the resident metal expert, I wanted to ask you if this should be filed under black metal? I know it's not the usual generic BM stuff but to me that's what it sounds like. Not my cup of tea at all, but kudos to the band for not being afraid of changing the rule book so to speak.

The dude has written and recorded everything himself apparently, literally a one man band

Some kind of atmoshperic black/folk metal, to be honest I don't look in to genre's that much, if I like the sound of a band then that's that for me!

Oh right! I didn't know it was a one man so I see your point now. My bad. I've just lost out on a record I wanted so I'm a bit grumpy mate

I'm with you on the genres thing, if I like it then it's good enough for me. Thing is I've come across similar sounding music - mostly from European bands I think - so I was wondering what was the correct term for it. Atmospheric Folk/Black Metal it is then!

I always forget just how many absolute tunes Blue Oyster Cult have done until they randomly come up on my playlist, then I spend the next five hours on a marathon of their albums.
