Having lived in Manchester for 15 years I know the pitfalls of places and Mansfield has many.

However, I fail - as would the vast majority of people to see much of a difference. I think it would be more than fair to suggest Chesterfield is slightly nicer but nothing more.

I hope with Mansfield now being a marginal seat with a new MP of the ruling party (however bad) should see extra investment in the town to see it improve. There's been promising signs over the last year

I’ve seen every room , it’s my job
You must stay in some fucking swank rooms then you. Me and the missus bob around different places quite a bit, but honestly that's the best room we've stopped in. You'll be a lot more a night for a better suite than that with the same facilities

The main difference to be honest is the quality of bars and restaurants. Chesterfield Town Centre has come lovely eateries and watering holes now. Unfortunately in comparison Mansfield Town Centre is lacking in both, quite run down and very quiet. From what I saw and what I know through my partners job, people just don't go there really and don't spend money. The outskirts are getting better but I'm not sure what you do about the centre. And as I said before the lack of being on the main line for trains and motorway links mean it's not likely to get better

Whereas I don't completely agree, if points are put across in that manner then folk will much more readily appreciate where coming from rather than those who lazily just call it a shithole. The town struggled as the labour mp Alan meale just sat on his Arse and did fucl all for the best part of 2 decades, whereas Chesterfield did and does benefit from good transport links (when I travel back to Manchester I end up getting the bus (sigh) back to Alfreton or Chesterfield) it also benefitted from being a swing seat which meant the obvious investment as the party wanted to keep the town on board, hopefully Mansfield are able to follow suit. Much needs to be done, the people are and always have been got it its just if MDC wake up and move with the times.

Chesterfield has never been a swing seat as I understand it? You could dress a monkey in red and it'd get voted in round here. Mansfield will almost certainly go back to Labour next voting round. Ben Bradley (current incumbent - Tory) in his inaugural speech at the house of commons spoke about how he wanted a mining museum in the town. Not outward investment, not more money into the town centre, not improving transport links. A blummin mining museum. Not sure how that paints a picture of a town on the up.

It's also those exact transport problems which cause the drag back and stagnation, not a perceived lack of effort from anyone. It all swings back to what I was saying about you wouldnt go to Mansfield unless you had a specific reason. Which means you don't get random pass through people spending money or people using the town as a base. It's too much of a pain in the arse. You wouldnt even use it as a kind of commuter belt because the roads are so bad. Chesterfield is really lucky to be on the main line. You can get anywhere from Chesterfield Station and get to it from anywhere. That is so so important to prosperity.

Chesterfield voted liberal between 2001-10 with a small minority, hence the statement

That doesn't make it a swing seat. A swing seat is one that could go either labour or tory and its close. We've been a Labour stronghold for years, and the other parties don't really matter.

Of course it is.

A swing seat is defined by a small majority. The seat in question doesn't have to be between any particular parties

In the strict definition you're right, but in reality there's only 2 parties in this country. The rest are also rans. Both us and you are labour hot beds, the odd crazy vote aside. Mansfield isn't likely to stay tory IMO. Besides, tory are more likely to tighten the purse than make public money available for projects than Labour are, certainly. Towns like ours usually get our project money from Europe, so Brexit will put paid to anything that isn't already in the waters

Mansfield definitely won't get any investment without a decent train link coming to the town. Even places like Newark, Worksop have better train links than Mansfield. Not sure about the arguement with regards to the motorway, Mansfield is fairly easy to get to from J27, or J28 of the M1, and its also fairly close to the A1.

To be honest though, with Brexit looming, we will never get any major investment now. Most of the funding comes from European funding schemes for towns like us, the Government (especially a Tory one), don't give a hoot about back water northern towns like ours, thats just the reality. Makes it even more laughable that Mansfield was one of the places in Britian that was something like 75% in favour of leaving the EU.

Correct mate, nearly all of it. The motorway links are close as the crow flies, but they're not quick roads. It takes a lot longer than it should to reach a major junction. Its just all the lights and 2 lanes into one and stuff, and the sheer amount of cars you seem to get round there. The whole of Mansfield seems to get snarled up for some reason. Trying to get around near that Sainsburys and what have you, it's a nightmare. Especially on a Saturday. My missus works at the civic centre in Mansfield and it takes about 20 minutes to get from her work to the a617 and it's no further away than Chesterfield to that roundabout, but that takes about 10 minutes.

It's pretty hilarious that both Chesterfield and Mansfield voted to leave the EU when nearly anything good that's happened is from European money. Look at the makeover Sheffield has had over the last 10 years or so, that's all from European money.

It's still a relevant on a seat by seat basis. Even if Chesterfield going Lib Dem won't put the Lib Dem's much closer to power, it will put the Tories further from it. Could still make a big difference in any upcoming election.

I'd rather we talked about the main points rather the arguing what the correct definition of a swing seat is. Besides, Chesterfield has voted Labour under Tony Benn and now Toby Perkins every vote year. Apart from 2 votes after Benn retired, it's been a Labour hot bed since the 1st World War.

Like Hamez says though, it doesn't really matter. Swing seat or not Mansfield is not likely to get any money from the gubmint with Brexit

Says more about the pathetic attempt at a remain campaign than anything.

Yea I think everyone expected a remain vote so the remain campaign felt like that didn't need to bother or something. Apart from Call Me Dave saying 'it'll cost you more to go to benidorm on your holidays you know', fuck off Dave

The problem being is, as correctly pointed out by Spireite-UK we're all Labour heartlands, but the party and Corbyn did nothing to stem the tide of perceived resentment of being "left behind". However, in voting out they've left themselves further behind in the long run.

I'd argue they did what they could to put that message across but for most people the truth, that it is complicated and will take a lot of effort to fix because vested interests will pull out every trick in the book to maintain their advantages doesn't seem that attractive a proposition when the alternative is to just blame immigrants and the EU and Nicola Sturgeon.

What a incredibly narrow minded way at looking at the huge vote for Brexit in Mansfield.

Oh it's not just Mansfield. Cjesterfield was 61pc, nottngham was the largest city to vote out and is also the poorest city in England. Many areas there are easily worst off than those in Mansfield. Boston, Ashfield etc all voted on a similar level.

If someone believes such problems are related just to Mansfield but not to off her surroundings, they're clearly incorrect

The other day I was pleasantly surprised by my journey through parts of suburban Mansfield I'd not driven through before. It was rather pleasant.

Growing middle class in Mansfield, believe it or not, big area Berry Hill is.

Might be a reason why the Tories won.

So here we are.

We're both crap, we both can't win. We've both managers who can't win (though appreciate Chesterfield have much more sympathy with their manager)

No wins under flitcroft, Chesterfield are bobbing along out to sea as it stands. A draw would do no good for neither side, though we would just bob along into the midtable sea, Chesterfield into unchartered waters of non league

If flitcroft loses, they'll be open mutiny in the stands, assuming he's still here. 2750 Mansfield fans will be either celebrating their demise or turning again on flitcroft

So no drama to be had, right?

We have to win, we have to attack, we have to play two up front. We really don't have anything to lose.

You will beat us. The players have bottled it big time, If they can’t get up for a promotion push in the position fatty left us in, nor could they get up for it when they walked out to a 4000+ packed out away end at Notts and I certainly can’t see them getting up for Saturday as we witnessed at our place whereas you lot were up for it.

This is only going one way unfortunately. Spireites will be up for it big time following a good comeback last night to boost confidence as well as the threat of non-league. Conversely, our lot do not know how to win. Zero confidence, general lack of fire-power and a non-specific air of inevitability. 4-1 Chesterfield with the away fans leaving early in numbers.

If it's 4-1 I'll be staggered. If we win I'll be amazed. I don't think you understand how weak willed and cowardly our team is.
