Great centre forward play from Lukaku.

I think it was just offside. It's ridiculously close, though.

Unpopular opinion: I don't really care about checking if marginal offsides are correct.

Me neither, never have done. Is the attacking player really gaining an advantage if his knee cap is offside? Load of bollocks.

You have to draw the line somewhere.

Preferably straight.

Quarter final draw:

Wigan/Man C V Southampton
Leicester v Chelsea
Man U v Brighton
Sheff Wednesday/Swansea v Rochdale/Spurs

Big teams kept apart if they all win but Leicester will fancy their chances at home.

The technology is not yet perfect, that's a given but I'm sure the techies are working on that and will get it right in the end.

IMO, VAR is a good thing and football is long overdue in introducing it. There will always be occasions where marginal decisions are involved and in the main most instances of decisions for things such as penalties and fouls being overturned will be for genuine refereeing howlers.

But where offside is concerned, well, that is a black and white issue. According to the laws of the game, if ANY part of a player that could legally play the ball is in an offside position, then the entire player is deemed to be offside. That's the laws of the game so it doesn't matter if it's a kneecap, the tip of his nose or a single stud of his boot. According to the laws, if any of those things occur then the whole player is offside. If a team is disadvantaged by such an instance, then that's not the fault of the technology, it's an issue for the laws for the game.

We can't pick and choose to ignore the laws we don't like whenever it does or doesn't suit us. Juan Mata's knee was in an offside position, therefore Juan Mata was offside. End of. The VAR established this (eventually) beyond a reasonable doubt. The goal was correctly disallowed.

VAR did it's job. Not as quickly or in the sort of "stunning" HD we've become accustomed to, but it got the decision right.

Imagine this in a World Cup final or something.

Is that really relevant..? OK, so a world cup final is an important match and the controversy would be all the more intensive for that. But in the final analysis, it would be a decision that had to be made and I for one take the view that the more important the match is, the more important it is to get it right which - I repeat - VAR did in the end.

I can't help myself from getting the feeling that there is hostility towards VAR for that very reason...... That actually, it DOES achieve a fair and just decision. Why do some people seem not to like it..? Where does the hostility come from, when the game attempts to introduce a system that contributes towards fair play..?

England would have one World Cup fewer.
Or one more. Had Frank Lampard's goal been given in 2010 I have little doubt that the momentum generated of pulling back a 2 goal deficit against Germany would've seen us march to victory.

The desperation of the commentators to justify Dele Alli's dive was embarrassing.

Well, he has been compared to a previous "great":

And what with me claiming in the very same post that Gerrard never dived, you make such a great point.

Actually, strike that. I didn't. Your post was complete dogshit.

Missed the game yesterday - well done Rochdale, just watching the highlights now and couldn't help but pause at this moment:

This whole debate about Dele Alli's proclivity for diving has been ongoing for some time! I don't hold any brief for him or for Spurs but I watched the match yesterday and when the incident happened I had no doubt that that was a penalty.

The first Rochdale goal though - that was a counter-attack any Premier League team would have been proud of executing.

The ref in the Wigan/Man City game just sent off Delph. That’s fine but he was actually reaching for the yellow card first of all.

When I first watched it I didn’t even think it was a foul but the more I watch it the more I agree with the ref.

Conclusion: ref = genius

I think when you see it from the referee's POV then it's a blatant red, you see Delph fly in, studs raised, leading leg at knee-height and send Power flying. It's only when the pundits view it in slow-mo at several different angles that they decide the ref made a mistake because Delph's dangerous leg isn't the one that makes contact. Even then, it was quite a wild challenge.

What a game, incredible defending from Wigan at the end. Lovely to see one of the big boys lose again.

Well Wigan seem to have Man City's number when it comes to the cup.

Not many keep them out!

Well taken winner too.
