'Tis a shame you're all too busy attempting to get a bite than to hold a conversation and to discuss your best away experiences.

Never mind. Back to FootyForums, where people actually debate and talk like adults rather than attempting to argue at every single opportunity, because arguing with people online makes people feel better about their own lives in the real world.

We aren't all like Devon Lad. Some of us are moderately normal.

Come into the social club next time you're doing an SJP away trip. Plenty of good real ale and cider. The new away end and new grandstand is a big improvement.

(GAWS fans not welcome obviously.)

Haha oh you beat us on the first day of the season. Well I guess that proves Exeter didn't bottle the play-offs mainly through poor home form after all.

Trapdoor, I think 98% of fans on here are sane enough to know that one bad egg doesn't tarnish the whole club. I've said a number of times I have nothing against Exeter at all.

I haven't been to Exeter, now the away end is completed its on my radar for future seasons.

Devon Lad is definitely one of the unfortunate exceptions that every club has. Yeovil and Exeter have a good relationship and I know several Grecians. I was even on the Big Bank with my Exeter-supporting friend for that 3-3 game a couple of years ago :eyes:

I’d agree with that, Exeter certainly rolled over and gifted us three points. Thanks.

Don't expect to stand in it though, they use it to hang the Exeter flags/banners!

TBH, I find the Centre Spot to be like something out of the 1950's. Not sure it made a significant positive contribution to the good reviews, except for the middle-aged beardy real-ale crowd.

I'd imagine the fact the city is more pleasant and has more of a sense of well-being than a lot of the economically depressed places in the lower leagues has more to do with it. From my own point of view I much prefer going somewhere like Cambridge, Lincoln, Cheltenham or Nottingham than some other places I could mention.

*Edit* Should he read the article. Still think it's probably Red Square more than the Centre Spot that swung it.

It really adds to the atmosphere when you have fans on all 4 sides of the pitch.

Can't see it happening at Brunton Park next season, there are no naturally huge clubs who you'd expect to bring in excess of 2000 away fans (which I think is around the point at which we would open the away ends). I expect Bradford will get close to that but not over it unless their game happens to be one that can guarantee them promotion/title. There's one or two other clubs like Grimsby, Plymouth and Swindon that potentially do it but only if the circumstances are right.

From memory the last few times we've had the Waterworks End open have been for
  • Oxford getting promoted the other season
  • Everton in the FA Cup
  • Hartlepool's last away game of the great escape season
Luton were promoted at BP a couple seasons back while Lincoln came to BP needing just a point to be declared champions, and neither of those brought so many that we opened the Waterworks.

Always enjoyed my visits to St James's Park. Exeter is a lovely city with some good pubs and never encounter any trouble. We usually manage a win when I go too. Wouldn't win my best away day vote though. That goes to Shrewsbury (not this season obviously).
Definitely with you on the Shrewsbury train - a couple of my best mates from Uni are Shrews fans so hitting the town with them after we've just beat them really adds to the experience.

A few good days out for me, both with FGR and the team I grew up following before I moved to the West Country. I usually judge on the degree of friendliness of those I have met along the way, either travelling to the ground, whilst enjoying the local hospitality, in and around the stadium or just the general feel of the place. For me the top few, in no particular order, have been Hartlepool, Exeter, Nuneaton and Ashford Town (Middx)...plus a couple where I was really wary but turned out to be just fine, these may come as a shock to many, Cardiff and Leeds.

There have been a few real shockers though, where it felt like a trip back to the dark ages, Reading (Elm Park)...sustained homophobic abuse by a significant percentage of the crowd for what seemed like the majority of the game, and similar from a group of Plymouth fans who waited outside as the away fans left to spout their bile...I also got punched in Huddersfield, but assume that was from bored, p****d-up thug, who just wanted to hit an away fan.
