What are we basing who’s the bigger club on fan base ? Ground size ? Historical league positions or attendance or away following load of rubbish if you ask me

no a combo of support, historical success, time spent in different divisions.

i think the list is pretty accurate, just something to talk about while we wait for pre season

but like i said apart from the bigger and smaller 4 or 5 a lot of clubs are the same size give or take

How are we measuring support though? Just in terms of attendance? That can be fraught with potholes, based on that within the run of a single season, Blackpool went from the smallest club in L1 to one of the biggest.

The only measures you could use to keep Salford from being the smallest club in L2 by some distance are ground size, recent average attendances and budget. Are any of those 'good' measures, since you could use them individually to claim Queen's Park are the biggest club in Scotland, Blackpool are among the smallest clubs in the league and Salford are the biggest club below the championship.

you can look at attendance but have to study peaks and troughs and come up with a ball park figure over a number of years

i was talking to a mate about this and he said that historical success is more important than crowds but if you go to a game with a bigger crowd and better set up but they won a few less trophies than another you feel that the better backed team is the bigger one

i think in the lower leagues support is a bigger factor over trophies won

The question is what would Salfords attendances be if the bottom dropped out and they slid back down the leagues. Stockport were still getting 3500 in conference North. Would salford?

yeah this league is a much of a muchness, in the national league there were 4 or 5 clearly bigger than the rest (if we base on support) but wouldn't be that big here. everyone else there is pretty small. L1 has polar opposites as well

The main group that were all part of I would say runs from the league 1 playoffs to top couple of teams in the conference. Either side of that are the big jumps in 'bigness' but there are outliers. Teams like Burton can find themselves in the championship while teams like Stockport, torquay and York end up in the conference North and South

Prior to Shankley, Liverpool were marooned in the Second Division and on a par with present day clubs like Sheffield Wednesday or West Brom. They were very much the poor relations to Everton in the city.

Which demonstrates that the size of a club is very much fluid and relative.
