Anyone but Barça
This is an important point.

I won't kick off just yet - Ian deserves the chance to explain himself.

You will all be glad to hear that I bought all the ingredients myself, coming in at 47€.

Give it a little shake and it will turn to a lovely shade of green.

We used to mix the blue WKD with lager back in ye olde school days. We called it "turbo shandy" but I think that's actually something else.

Surely a turbo shandy is made with a lemon flavoured alcopop?

Probably, all I know is that it isn't what we called a turbo shandy. There seems to be a few versions of it.

He didn't say he drank it. In fact, he drew particular attention to the aesthetic qualities of the mixture.

The muesli I will be eating for breakfast with milk (not pictured). I've never tried Skyr before and it looks nice on the tv commercial plus was on offer so I took a punt on it. The tinned salmon will go on a sandwich probably (may resurrect the sarnie thread for that). Jalapenos will go on some nachos or summat. Maoam needs no explanation I don't reckon. Can't remember the exact cost but I got change from a tenner.

Skyr stuff is pretty good.

Heartily agree with all your purchases Craig. However, I feel the presentation could have been better.

7/10.

I'll make more of an effort next time mnb, may break out the cushions.

The deer tin once contained the best short bread I've ever tasted bought for me as a gift when my sister visited Edinburgh, alas now all it contains is rich teas and digestives.

As far as "Alas" goes it's not that bad is it?

Alas, poor Yorick, his skull once held the greatest shortbread I ever tasted.
Ophelia did bring it back from Edinburgh for Laertes.

All I can say is that it must have been magnificent shortbread for you to be disappointed with rich teas and digestives. Whilst neither of these two biscuits are in the top echelons of biscuits, they're certainly "do a job" to use a football commentator's parlance,

I've set it up to look a little like a penguin.

A like for the penguin, an animal I am a big fan of.

I commend your creativity, Steven.

Allow me to elaborate, PP:

The background is an homage to Hans Holbein the Younger's The Ambassadors, in which, in the far left of the painting (and unnoticed by many who view it), a glimpse of the wall behind the curtain is visible. In a picture ripe (some might say overripe) with piquant symbolism, this is an unsubtle (tho, again, somewhat oxymoronically - it is subtle in its positioning within the image) suggestion of artifice, of illusion, of the only skin-deep nature of the image that the sitters sought to project.

Pagnell, understanding this, and synthesising that reference with a composition redolent of the later (and somewhat related) Netherlandish tradition of the vanitas and the notions of mortality and transience that that corpus of work explores, seeks to make a critical comment on the nature of self-image in the context of the internet forum. Specifically the nature of his own self-image.

In Western art wine symbolises culture, indulgence, the pleasures of the senses, but here the curtain has turned from green to red, and thus those associations are inverted, subverted, made hollow. These are but fripperies, fleeting and meaningless, Pagnell suggests. They are an illusory retreat from the miseries of human existence.

And so: What have I become, the photograph asks. Do I amount to no more than this? A single, lonely glass, a full bottle of wine for one man, on a school night, not-so-merrily quaffed whilst watching Question Time, maybe even tweeting in, hoping to see my name on the screen, as if to assuage (however temporarily) my existential crisis, to at least hear a ghostly echo as I scream into the abyss?

A cry for help, then. A still life indeed. All too still. As still as the quiet of the grave. Pagnell's grave.
