Good to see some players in form picked like Maddison.

I see Chalobah has been selected despite only just coming back from injury and not started a league game yet ..

Will Hughes might consider himself unlucky - Mout has done well but in the Championship.

Anyway probably start with Dier and Henderson away to Spain and Croatia..

Bizarre squad but suppose its only for shitty friendlies.

Surely Callum Wilson has got to be involved ahead of a 19yr old at Derby?

Best squad he's picked by a long way since he's been in charge. Got some young players in there who can keep the ball and create chances like Maddison and Mount what we have been crying out for and great to see Barkley back in aswel who offers something different to the rest of the other midfielders. Those days of picking the likes of Livermore are hopefully long gone.

It's clearly a positive move, why are people complaining? The only quibble would be that if Chalobah is worth a spot, then surely Hughes is more deserving. I might also have had Harvey Barnes in ahead of Mount, but both are very promising prospects.

Maybe not for the shit nations like Scotland but for England they're equally as shit as normal friendlies.
It's a league. I'm not saying it's a great system (at this moment in time, who can tell?) but it's a damn sight better than being served shit friendlies for 2 years.

I'd rather watch neither tbh but that's just me, just an annoying interruption to club football.

Yes, I agree with that. Got nothing to do all afternoon. It's infuriating!

Tabloids reporting Rooney will making a one off appearance as captain against the USA in a couple of weeks as a "goodbye/thank you" to the fans.

Presumably not the fans he told to f-off at the World Cup in South Africa!

And the match will be played in honour of the Wayne Rooney foundation.

Load of bollocks. Does retiring not mean anything anymore? I'm really starting to despise modern football.

Don't think there's any harm in it to be honest. As long as he comes on for a sub appearance for the final 5/10 minutes of the match and isn't depriving anybody else of the majority of the match.

Was looking forward to see us trying out Sancho, Maddison and Mount ect in this game but oh well. I have always been a big fan of Rooney but I'm bit disappointed about this tbh.

Presumably if he's captaining the side, that means he starts?

Guess they feel Kane will be fit.

Shame about Loftus Cheek getting injured just as he was finding form.

The Nations League games are very close to the U21 Euros.

Understand that but Chilwell, Rashford, Trent, Gomez and Sancho are all illegible to play for under 21 I think but they've been selected.

None of those players are going to the U21 Euros.

When you look at the players born on or after 1st January 1996 (eligible to play for the U21s in the summer) we have some real depth there for a change, centre backs aside. They've give the rest of the squad a run for their money.

Gunn, Henderson, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold, Wan-Bissaka, Chilwell, Sessegnon, Barnes, Choudhury, Foden, Maddison, Winks, Rice, Loftus-Cheek, Alli, Cook, Maitland-Niles, Mount, Nelson, Hudson-Odoi, Sancho, Lookman, Rashford, Abraham, Calvert-Lewin.

Point I'm trying to make is if all the other young players are too good for under 21 then Maddison should be in same bracket.

I would assume the thinking is that Southgate is not going to throw and untested senior player into a starting role against the Netherlands, so it's better that he plays an U21 tournament than sit on the bench in the Nations League semi final.

Wan-Bissaka probably won't make this squad for a few years yet what with Trent and Walker. Annoying.

Also annoying our two best young defenders are both right backs, a sort of problem only Scotland are used to.

There's absolutely no self-respect left in English football if Aidy Boothroyd is still U21 manager after this round of internationals. Total humiliation this afternoon.
