Your rivals that is. Following a bit of a fishing trip/bitchfest on another thread (and also because a couple of posters were getting sanctimonious about other clubs rivalry, which is very silly, I though I'd start this thread. Let's all be as honest as we can, when you look around at your clubs local rivals, what do you see? It's naturally a very personal interpretation, so there's no right or wrong, but it can be enlightening to see how others view you. To start us off, this is my own impression of the clubs around Rotherham United. Listed, incidentally, in order of prominence, whatever we want to think.

Sheffield Wednesday - easily the most massive club, with the biggest support in our immediate area. We may even admire them if it wasn't for their irritating habit of constantly pointing this out, every single fucking day. Even though they haven't won anything for decades and were in L1 themselves not that long ago. Beating them is the best feeling in the world. Losing, at home, is the worst.

Sheffield United - proper Sheffield club with a sense of where they belong in the world. Generally the best fans in Sheffield too, except Brian the Blade, who gives every impression of a Wednesday fan who got lost one day. Will always be rivals of course, but there are also links, especially since we nearly closed down and SUFC, managed by former Millers player Neil Warnock at the time, did more than possibly all other clubs combined to save us. Many now push this into the background for the sake of rivalry and not feeling sick, but I will always remember.

Barnsley - probably the only local rival club that we would want to be. Similar situation to us, old fashioned working men's football club from a mining area in the Sheffield shadow, but regularly pulling in five figure attendances and spending more time in the championship than out of it. Can't argue with that, given that in my childhood they were distinctly poorly supported fourth division rubbish. Now a magnificent football club and very well run.

Doncaster Rovers - local rivals with no actual affinity whatsoever. The inferior little club that we might become one day if we fuck things up badly enough. Have played in the conference (we never have) and had sub 1000 home attendances (we never have). Given that in the fifties they were quite a big club, comparatively, and a derby between us and them at their ground once attracted a crowd 10,000 higher than our ground could even accommodate at its peak, may explain the massive chip they have on their shoulders now. Losing v DRFC is simply abject failure. A 6-2 win at Belle View in the 90's was a pleasing highlight.

Chesterfield - fake rival, foisted upon the rest of South Yorkshire by Radio Sheffield. I don't think they much care for us either.

If I could make one change, like moving the pieces on a chessboard, I'd switch Donny with Scunthorpe United. Always quite liked them, been to their ground loads, including a WSG England V USA fixture, and would prefer them as a local rival.

Grimsby, Donny, Lincoln and Hull . Don’t care about Wigan Warriors although they are the biggest sport institution in Wigan

LEEDS LEEDS LEEDS

Take both Sheffield clubs and times it by 100. Fans fucking everywhere, most of which never attend. God forbid what will happen if they find themselves back in the top tier. Hilarious watching them fail year-on-year - and the cup game a couple of year ago at VP was a great night.

HUDDERSFIELD

A very similar sized club to us, IMO - but they’ll strongly disagree, because they won the first division back in 1755. Foul obsession with shagging dogs. Strangely, I expected to see more floating pup fans strolling about with their recent promotion, but to be honest, I hardly ever see any. With Leeds falling from the Prem, they have played them a lot recently. If you ask their younger generation fans, ‘Sadford’ down exists. The older generation however.... same applies to L**ds in that sense, too.

BURNLEY

Just across the Aire Valley lies Burnley. They have a lot of fans on the outer-skirts of Bradford, and back in the day the games used to be incredibly fierce. I actually quite like Burnley, so no animosity from me.

HALIFAX

I suppose these could be classed as rivals if it’s judged purely on crowd trouble. Got fairly tasty the other year, but actually, I don’t think we’ve play them in the league since 1981.

BRADFORD PARK AVENUE

One for the older fans. Again, fairly fiercely contested derbies with Park Avenue back in the day. Nowadays, the average age of their fanbase is 70, and they average circa 400 per game. A lot of their fans went on to support Leeds once they liquidated.

Wednesday. Equivalent to a schoolyard bully. Ramming it down the rest of S Yorks throats how massive they are etc, yet if Leeds turn up in the playground they cower in the corner (let alone any of the Prem big boys).

Sheff U - trying a bit too hard to be Wednesday recently calling us toytown, saying we aren't a threat etc. But get very angry when we beat them or are a league above. Loaned us players when we were in admin. Passionate fans when attacking their Kop end make it very intimidating as they feel like they can suck the ball in. Wednesday you just hear a faint drum beat unless they score. Good club, to me have more potential to go further than Wednesday but are less loyal when the chips are down.

Barnsley - trying to take emotion out, as they keep nicking our transfer targets and their official site then taunts us after which is a little unprofessional. Like beau, remember them being less fashionable than us, but they boomed when football boomed so got an excellent academy, facilities and infrastructure and left us behind for a decade or so, maybe two. Have to relate to them as they suffer the same fate as us. Decent size fish in this division but not big enough or rich enough or glamourous enough to do anything in the league above so find ourselves in trouble if we get there.

Donny - never-has-beens. Used to be a club in the fifties before football became popular in Leeds. Since then it's basically a second club for the ones that can't afford to follow Leeds. All 900 of them in the 90s, concealed behind a thinly veiled attempt of a protest, yet crowds stayed Conference level for a while after Richardson and before Mr Plastic Surgeey himself. He built them a new ground so they try and belittle the likes of Scunny, but most fans know the true score with them. Leeds coaches used to run from Belle Vue itself whilst the upcoming Leeds legends night at the Keepmoat says enough about the loyalties of the town.

Chezzy, yoyo club between the 4th and 3rd who we disliked because they were our bogey club whenever we dropped down a class. To be fair to them, they're more concerned with Mansfield than any of us. Ta just Radio Sheffield propaganda.

A faux-rivalry that got a bit tasty a couple of years ago. They don’t bring enough to BP to really be rivals. Generally seem a decent bunch.

Bury
See above plus a few more weirdos.

Blackburn
Enjoyed the game earlier this year. The older boys have passed down the notion of rivalry from when it was one in the 80s. Been apart for a while now but definitely the most anticipated fixture for us this season. Wouldn’t go as far as saying our ‘cup final’ like Peter Whittingham suggested - everyone knows you’d still be shite without Walker’s money.

Man Utd
The only team I truly hate. Mark Hughes ruined my life before I was born. Oldham reds are the worst and seem to take pleasure in our demise - weirdos. If arrogance was a football team, it would be them.

Man City
Mainly jealous of their recent success. Fans don’t seem to have fully adopted the arrogance of the red half of the city though I imagine it’s probably not far away. Always been well supported despite the emptihad digs.

Aye, we do. Actually don’t mind Stockport personally - admire that they’ve kept a decent fan base despite being terrible for years now.

Thoroughly enjoying Tranmere’s stay in obscurity, long may it continue.

As an outsidsr, fans of all the north west clubs have this weird friendship that comes from Man Utd's shadow and the bleak environment they all live in.

I am not from Devon so any rivalry is not in my bones, but my observation is that Torquay is well-liked and that the reaction to Exeter varies from pure vitriol to sensible respect. It is however the game we want to win. My own personal view is that I like Exeter’s ownership model, their academy is better than ours at present and I respect Tisdale. The problem for them is that their ownership model limits how far they can go, and given the crowds our respective teams attract they are most often below us. A position many greens would suggest is the natural order of things down these there parts.

Given we have so few near neighbours I note that some try and manufacture rivalries with Yeovil, the two Bristol teams and even Pompey. Though Swindon never gets mentioned. This seems odd to me, and as a Londoner feels a bit like the Irons having a rivalry with Peterborough geographically. Though I suppose it makes a bit of sense when you factor in that our closest game this season is the 220 miles round trip to Bristol.

I did like the games against Pompey in league two but that was a respect thing, both in terms of crowd sizes and behaviour and the closeness of the matches, not a local rivalry. And as to the dockyard rivalry, in a few years they will have one and we won’t.

Not local rivals or anything, and I'm not sure why, but I'd really welcome a revival at Stockport County. I miss them off the fixture lists and the trips to edgley park, where I could watch the planes if we were shite.

I have a grudging respect for Bristol City. I don’t give a fuck about Bristol Rovers. Reading is just weird.

But Oxford are despicable in all respects. I also detest Bournemouth.

Leeds - hate them all the time
Hudders - hate them when we play them
Burnley/Halifax - can’t say I even know any fans of these
South Yorkshire clubs and Hull - can get excited about some of the games but apart from when Evans was manager of Rotherham I can’t remember too much animosity

Given that it was just my opinion, the fact you've heard similar a lot of times suggests there's probably something it. You've just criticised someone for sharing an opinion that's probably correct. Neat

We are northern and proud to be. Yes their is rivalry but at the end of the day, and i only speak for myself but i would prefer a northern team to win cups/leagues/promotions over southern teams like urself.....

Whether its an opinion I've heard once or a million times its a boring and narrow minded one. Bearing in mind most Man United fans live near you I would say Oxford are the ones in their shadow.

See I can do it too.

Luckily we aren't in danger of winning any cups. But that's exactly what I mean. The idea of Swindon or Reading having any ounce of happiness can fuck right off.
