Well, Brazil like so many of the favoured teams in this tournament go into this one needing a response. An underwhelming draw with Switzerland will not go far to convince people they have put 2014 behind them.

They'll be playing a Costa Rica side that need something to give themselves a fighting chance at qualifying for the knockouts. Should be a good un.

Brazil making hard work of this so far. Most of the time they're playing at walking pace, easy enough for Costa Rice to defend against.

Neymar misses a sitter.

Costa Rica have done well here, could still nick this.

Neymar ought to be booked for his ridiculous comedy fall.

All in favour of VAR if it's gonna stop cheating bastards like that, he could have easily stayed on his feet and slotted that in aswell.

Justice was only delayed, not denied, for Neymar!

Brazil deserved to win, but my god, the superlatives really don't fit with what we've seen from them so far. Hoddle's lavish praise was nauseating at times. They drew with Switzerland and scraped past a Costa Rica side that were clearly knackered after an hour. Why are they being talked about like this side even holds a torch to the 1998/2002 teams. This current team is bang average and against a better team, I think they get picked apart.

Disappointed Costa Rica didn't manage their energy levels better and have more of a go, they deserved to lose for the embarrassing flops to the floor and time wasting.

Brazil were truly awful. So sick of Neymar turning round to the ref after every tackle expecting a free kick and then when he rightly doesn’t get it, he throws his toys out of the pram. Costa Rica barely fouled him today, they just made him look very average. Best refereeing performance of the tournament so far for me.

Brazil weren't awful, they were up against a good defence and wore them down, but they were petulant and Neymar's acted like a proper bellend for most of the game.

They are in the top 2 or 3 contenders for sure, no real weak links and some world class attacking talent.

They were dreadful Chris! How many times did they test Navas? And if ever there’s a keeper to test because they’re prone to errors, it’s Navas. The only bright sparks for Brazil were Coutinho, Costa and Casemiro. What has happened to Willian? He looks a shadow of the player he is at Chelsea. Dumped at half time.
The other big problem is their defence. There’s a huge weakness there. Costa Rica should have been 1-0 up but the guy fluffed his lines. They’re far too open at times and slow at reacting. If Costa Rica had more ambition they could have had more openings.
They’re only in the top 2 or 3 because of their name, not for their personnel. If they’re not careful, they could get on the wrong end of another crushing defeat, a bit like Argentina last night.

Absolutely.

And his pathetic whining afterwards. As if Brazil just've won the World Cup. You beat Costa Rica in stoppage time, ffs.

I hope that the Swiss will win today against Serbia, so that the Serbians have to win their last match against Brazil. Maybe they'll do that and Brazil is out then (if Serbia wins today they can't be arsed in the last match against Brazil, so better they'll lose today)

Not saying they were brilliant, but it's not about being brilliant at this stage, it's about getting the job done. Costa Rica are no mugs and were tough to break down, yes they had one good chance and one or two decent breaks but you can't expect teams to have no chances at all and Allison didn't have much to do. Teams like Brazil build into world cups, not sure why people expect them to be ripping teams apart straight away, these players don't play together every week so it takes time to properly gel. They have a solid base and top players going forward, no one will fancy playing them. They weren't that special in 02 either, up until the latter stages. People keep expecting them to be like 70 or 82 and samba skills mad attacking etc but footballs way different now and that style doesn't work.

And people always jump on the Navas is dodgy bandwagon, when in fact he's a quality keeper. Maybe not as good as Neuer or De Gea, but he's in that group behind them with the likes of Lloris and Ter Stegen. His shot stopping is as good as anyone's.You don't start every week for Real and win 3 Champions Leagues if you're not a top player.

At the same time people talk up the likes of Pickford and Butland, who are bang average. As was Joe Hart before he became utter shit, and back then people were trying to call him world class lol.

I agree it’s about getting the job done, but game by game, you need to show progression, otherwise you’ll come unstuck and knocked out quickly. Brazil weren’t any better today than they were against Switzerland, in fact they probably played worse. I would never expect Brazil to play like the world class sides of the past, they won’t get their team to that level ever again, but you’ve got to be convincing in your performances and they haven’t been. Weren’t convincing in 2002? They won every game and scored over 10 goals in the group stage I think.
Navas isn’t the worst keeper ever, but yeah he makes howlers. He made a few of them in the champions league the season just gone. Or what about Rashford’s shot in the warm up games? That’s not a top keeper. There’s a reason Real are linked with Alisson, Courtois and De Gea all the time, they don’t rate Navas that highly. The one thing he is good at, is playing out from the back, which these days seems to get substituted in for actual goalkeeping attributes. Navas didn’t win the champions league, the attacking power did. He was barely tested against Liverpool.
Butland, Pickford, Hart, they all have their flaws. I’d much rather have them over Navas, but not the Hart that seems to have completely lost it since he left Man City.

VAR was handy indeed for that penalty incident, but tbf, it sure looked like a clear penno in real time. It was only when I watched the replay that I saw that Neymar had gone down rather easily. IOW, I don't blame the ref at all for awarding a pen as I would've done the same.

I'm still on the fence on this whole VAR thing, but so far I think it's working. What I'm not liking though is that even the fans at the grounds are now drawing imaginary squares with their hands, when in them olden times we just used to shout 'penalty ref' and point our collective fingers at the penalty spot ;)

I thought at the time that the defender had got a full hand of shirt and pulled him back but clearly the replays showed it was a con.....fucker that he is!
