We make the long trip to Carlisle after being the victims of a burglary on the opening day at Sixfields. Our manager doesn't think anything is likely to happen before the deadline so we may still have Crooks and Van Veen. I think he'll change it up towards the top of the pitch as we were very profligate on Saturday, and with a lot of strength in depth we aren't short of options.

With regard to this game I fancy us to take all 3 points, we should be confident after the way we played against a fellow supposed title challenger, and if we create the same number of chances again we'll surely take a couple.

Think I've seen word about a protest at Carlisle on Saturday, any Carlisle fans able to elaborate on that?

Prediction: 0-2 away win and 300 Cobblers

It doesn't seem very well organised, looking at our forum, even some of the 'mega-posters' are only just finding out bits and pieces about it. Supposedly gathering outside the Main Stand before the match and then continuing beneath the director's box during the game.

I'd be surprised if it's more than just a pocket of fifty or so people gathering with placards, but the media are interested in covering it and they could get a chant of sack the board going around the place (which is a bit redundant for reasons I mention in the Exeter thread).

We'll see.

On the pitch, unless Sheridan has managed to pull off some miracle with the assortment of players he has at his disposal, your prediction could be about right.

Expect a home crowd below 3,500, maybe even below 3,000.

Northampton will win the game, that I have no doubt.

Not sure by how many and whether we’ll score or not.

I’m dreading it really. I’m dreading the defeat, I’m dreading looking at the league table, I’m dreading seeing our goal difference, I’m dreading non league football next season.

I hate football.

I’m looking forward to Saturday, a day on the drink, what’s not to like :P1:

Agreed that Northampton will likely win, somehow the bookies have us as favourites and 9/5 for an away win is definitely worth a bet.

Also agreed that the protest will be powderpuff - there’s very little interest at the moment, and as we’ve seen in recent years there’s not much motivation when it comes to protesting against the board, even if a fair proportion of us want them gone.

Didn’t realise Van Veen was now at Northampton. Top player for this level after being one of the better players in League One only 12 months ago.

I'm sort of not fussed by the result. Well I'd be delighted with anything to take a positive from, but I'm expecting a poor performance and defeat and so not letting what I'll probably witness on the pitch get me down. I still enjoy going to Brunton Park for the matchday atmosphere and spending time with my mates. I'd certainly take a defeat in this match and a credible rumour of a change of ownership ahead of winning this match and another week where it looks like nothing is changing.

We managed to keep hold of all our players which is a major plus for us, especially keeping Crooks. Going for a 2-1 Cobblers victory here.

Still early in the season to know our best team, and if Sheridan has settled on that yet. But I'd go with.

Fryer
Liddle Gerrard Parkes Grainger
Etuhu Jones Devitt
Yates Bennett Hope

Bench: Collin, Gillesphey, Miller, Slater, Glendon, Campbell, Adewusi

Hes been utter garbage for us. Not scored yet and when not injured barely moves, hoping this season is different!

We lose this match, then we can expect an angry home crowd at the end.

Oh and by the way Cobblers fans, how come you are back down in L2 only 2 years later? hehehe

the biggest mistake Northampton will make tomorrow will be playing their first team leaving them tired for the league cup game when in fact they could play their reserves in this game and still win at a canter while remaining fresh for midweek

according to the media 'over a dozen' fans have turned up to the protest.

Yeah, the other 2000 men fell asleep or just could not be arsed I bet. lol

The board are good at boring the life out of us.

Well we’ve actually played ok first half, apart from defensively that is. All over the place again, Liddle absolutely shite, Northampton could have had 3 goals. Gerrard’s debut can’t come soon enough.

We’ve created openings ourself though which is positive.

Still think we’ll lose due to our inept defending.

Thrilled with a point. We played well in midfield and going forward (apart from Bennett), but defensively it was a horror show.

Hopefully Gerrard will tighten us up

Looking through the posts about it on the forum it seems like the organisers of it were pissing people off, clearly didn't manage to win hearts and minds. Everyone just arguing with each other and pointing fingers. It's usually the case with these things the people who step up to lead protests turn out to be a bit on the obnoxious self-righteous side, quick to accuse people of licking the board's arses if they express a slightly different opinion and fail to articulate a real message besides just 'we're gonna cause a bit of a scene and show the board up'.

I'm really not surprised it was all so half-assed, as it seemed to be about nothing apart from expressing anger, and people won't be moved by that.

Decent game yesterday, thought Northampton looked very good going forward, big and powerful defenders with confidence on the ball. I’d say they were the better team until the last 20 minutes when they seemed to tire and we grew into the game, definitely seen penalties given for those handball appeals at the end, thought the first one was a certainty.

I still think we’ll be in trouble this season but some positives to take from that game, against a decent side. I had Northampton to score 2+ at 13/8 instead

Not a bad game, thought that we showed enough to win it even after going behind, although our players switched off for the free kick completely there, can't argue with the strike though!
2-1 up and expecting us to coast home because we hadn't been in much danger up until that point, however the "your always the most vulnerable immediately after scoring" bit us in the bum.
Thought there might have been a good shout for one of the hand balls but we were too far away to see.
I also thought we tired towards the end.

Reading the Northampton forum I think that the average fan's perspective is that every match should finish 0-0, because almost every goal is a poor one to concede. I think both Carlisle and Northampton fans came away feeling like they should have won 2-0.

Admittedly both teams were pretty crap defensively and if they were defending better could well have won, but like some managers say, there are no good goals to concede. You always look at a goal you've conceded from your point of view and say that you should never have conceded a goal like that.

Occasionally you concede a worldy, but even that often serves to prove most fan's points; that the other team were only able to score out of the blue from a moment of sheer brilliance and he could hit that shot a hundred times and wouldn't score another like that.

I put both of our goals down to good play. Devitt hits a superb strike after we catch Northampton napping from a free kick. Campbell plays a killer through ball that Hope slots away with an accomplished first time finish. I saw the Northampton goals as the result of us leaving players unmarked in the box, and not being able to prevent them putting crosses in in the first place. On the Northampton forum, both of our goals were speculative long-range efforts that the keeper should have saved, while their goals were vindication of the quality of two players who were out of favour last season.

Perhaps credit for all the goals belongs to the attackers who found the space, spotted the opportunities and finished it; though both teams could certainly have done more to restrict the chances their opponents had, not saying it wasn't also poor defending.

The go-pro highlights we posted below definitely should put to bed the views of those Northampton fans who believe their keeper actually dived out of the way of Devitt's shot. He almost gets a fingertip to it, it was just a good strike. It looks as though he should have got to Hope's goal but it takes a very good keeper to get down quick enough to a first-time strike like that, and what you can't even quite make out on the highlights but you definitely could see from my position behind the goal is that it has quite a neat bend on it, passing the keeper well wide of the goal before curling back around behind him and just inside the post. It was an excellent finish that because of the level he plays, at he probably won't get the credit for that he deserves.

Also, this is the handball the referee told John Sheridan occurred outside the area. It wasn't even hit from outside the area! What a fucking muppet. It's a textbook penalty, defender has his arms up in an un-natural position and the ball hits said arm.

I agree that when shots are close and they hit a hand they shouldn’t be given, but in this case it’s not ball to hand, your player has stuck his hand up to block the shot. Clear hand ball and penalty for me.
