This surely can't sit right with the EU loving liberal types? Polling stations closed down, key figures arrested, internet taken down, buildings seized, communication mediums scrambled and ballot boxes stolen. The EU in 2017, not actually that nice is it?

Some of the scenes teetering out now are really quite disturbing as are the neo-fascist rallies in Madrid supporting the state.

Unlike Germany which got rid of its fascist civil service and internal structure Spain never did the same after Franco. Some of those old fascist/ monarchist c*** are still knocking about as you can see.

Good grief. How is this happening in Western Europe and the entirety of the EU remain silent? https://t.co/53ZwM28q5O

The Catalonian people are reliant on their firefighters to keep them safe from police violence, what kind of shitness is this?

Public sector workers organising to non-violently protect people from state-ordered police violence. Seeing these aporias open up in real time gives a sense of the alternatives that are possible even now.

So the equivalent of this was the Scottish referendum I guess. For all of the perceived negatives of the U.K., the country's police were never instructed to beat its own people to influence the vote.

Nope, can't ever think of an occasion where British police have ever tried to beat people into submission. Not once, ever:ffs:

Oh don't be facetious, you're a better poster than that. My post was meant entirely innocently and was not one to attack me on.

I also didn't say the police in our country were good, you're trying to plant words on me now.

Not really sure how it's the EU's fault? Don't think anyone's under any illusions that not all EU member states are nice and fluffy / won't try to subvert democracy / resort to violence and intimidation. Hungary have Victor Orban at the helm ffs!

Seems probable if the UK government had not conferred political legitimacy, indyref would have been met with similar aggression. States not historically kind to autonomous secessionist movements

A single unitary authority for urban Dorset
All this response does is further the cause for separation, gaining that cause more support and legitimacy.

They're silent on a state brutally denying its citizens autonomy. It's fair enough to bring them into it.

The Abertawe doublethink: The EU shouldn't interfere with sovereign states and the EU should interfere with sovereign states.

Probably, I don't know either. I'm just accusing Abertawe of having inconsistent arguments against the EU.

The EU do have at least one - two articles that explicitly relate to the use of force against civilians.

Far be it for me to do the EU a due, and I'm all for them leaving 'sovereign state' issues to be handled internally, but this is exactly the sort of thing they can and should take some leadership on and mediate. If the UK with Scotland desended into this I'd expect some justified outside intervention.

I'll await the EU reaction with interest. So far all I've seen is a total non response from Verhofstadt.

I've seen more and more of the fascist state violence. The EU needs to intervene or really what's the point?

Reminds me of what happened in Spain and Catalonia during the 30s.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.

He condemned it hours ago.

Yep, it's not exactly a strong condemnation. I think the EU is confusing its position on independence (Kurdistan etc) with the fact it should be representing all of its people.
